Shigemoto's construction of the Belavin ZN×ZN\mathbb{Z}_N\times\mathbb{Z}_N vertex model builds candidate Zamolodchikov-algebra state vectors from theta functions with characteristics; quasi-periodicity closure leaves exactly two cases, and for the alternative case-2 construction (components θa/N,0(u;Nτ)\theta_{a/N,0}(u;N\tau), weight normalization γ=2/N\gamma=2/N) the algebra is verified only numerically by the REDUCE computer-algebra system: it holds at N=2N=2 and fails for N≥3N\ge 3, with no analytic explanation, while even the standard case-1 construction is supported only by quasi-periodicity matching plus an undelivered completeness claim. The problem asks for a rigorous analytic determination: prove the case-1 algebra and the completeness of its vector set for all NN, and determine exactly the set of NN for which the case-2 algebra holds.

Background

Exactly solvable ("integrable") two-dimensional statistical models are lattice models whose local Boltzmann weights satisfy the Yang–Baxter equation, a functional equation that guarantees commuting transfer matrices and hence exact solvability. The Belavin model (A. A. Belavin, 1981) is the ZN×ZN\mathbb{Z}_N\times\mathbb{Z}_N-symmetric vertex model — an edge-interaction model whose edge states take NN values and whose weights carry a pair of clock-type ZN\mathbb{Z}_N symmetries — and it provides the general elliptic solution of the Yang–Baxter equation, with weights built from theta functions with characteristics: θa,b(u;τ)=∑n∈Zexp⁡{πi(n+a)2τ+2πi(n+a)(u+b)}\theta_{a,b}(u;\tau)=\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}\exp\{\pi i(n+a)^2\tau+2\pi i(n+a)(u+b)\}. These functions are quasi-periodic rather than periodic: shifting uu by 11 or by τ\tau multiplies them by explicit elementary factors. A classical route to such solutions for vertex models, which the source itself credits to Cherednik, is the Zamolodchikov algebra: one seeks a vector A(u)A(u) and a weight matrix S(u)S(u) obeying A(u1)⊗A(u2+η)=S(u1−u2) A(u1+η)⊗A(u2)A(u_1)\otimes A(u_2+\eta)=S(u_1-u_2)\,A(u_1+\eta)\otimes A(u_2), where η\eta is the crossing parameter; if vectors satisfying this algebra form a complete (linearly independent, spanning) set, the Yang–Baxter equation for SS follows. Shigemoto's review (arXiv:1603.01079) pursues this route for the Belavin model with state vectors whose components are θa/N,Bk(u;Cτ)\theta_{a/N,Bk}(u;C\tau), a,k∈ZNa,k\in\mathbb{Z}_N, where BB scales the second characteristic and CC the modulus, and with weights S(u)=∑α1,α2wα1,α2(u) Zα1Xα2⊗X−α2Z−α1S(u)=\sum_{\alpha_1,\alpha_2}w^{\alpha_1,\alpha_2}(u)\,Z^{\alpha_1}X^{\alpha_2}\otimes X^{-\alpha_2}Z^{-\alpha_1}, where ZZ and XX are the clock and shift matrices (ZX=ωXZZX=\omega XZ, ω=e2πi/N\omega=e^{2\pi i/N}) generating the "cyclic representation of SU(2)" that the paper advocates as the common origin of integrability, and wα1,α2(u)=1N σα1,α2(u+η/N) σ0,0(γη)σα1,α2(η/N) σ0,0(u+γη)w^{\alpha_1,\alpha_2}(u)=\frac{1}{N}\,\frac{\sigma^{\alpha_1,\alpha_2}(u+\eta/N)\,\sigma^{0,0}(\gamma\eta)}{\sigma^{\alpha_1,\alpha_2}(\eta/N)\,\sigma^{0,0}(u+\gamma\eta)} with σα1,α2(u)=θα2/N+1/2, α1/N+1/2(u;τ)\sigma^{\alpha_1,\alpha_2}(u)=\theta_{\alpha_2/N+1/2,\,\alpha_1/N+1/2}(u;\tau), where γ\gamma is a normalization constant left free at this stage and fixed afterwards by quasi-periodicity matching. Requiring the family of vectors to be closed under quasi-periodic shifts u→u+ξ1+ξ2τu\to u+\xi_1+\xi_2\tau, with shift prefactors independent of kk, leaves exactly two possibilities: case 1, B=C=N/(N−1)B=C=N/(N-1), whose state vector has components θa/N,Nk/(N−1)(u;Nτ/(N−1))\theta_{a/N,Nk/(N-1)}(u;N\tau/(N-1)) and forces γ=1\gamma=1; and case 2, B=C=NB=C=N, whose state vector has components θa/N,0(u;Nτ)\theta_{a/N,0}(u;N\tau) and forces γ=2/N\gamma=2/N. The paper establishes only that both sides of the algebra have matching quasi-periodicity (which is what fixes γ\gamma in each case) and asserts completeness without proof. For case 2 it reports a computer-algebra check (using the REDUCE system) that the "another Zamolodchikov algebra" A~(u1)⊗A~(u2+η)=S~(u1−u2) A~(u1+η)⊗A~(u2)\tilde A(u_1)\otimes\tilde A(u_2+\eta)=\tilde S(u_1-u_2)\,\tilde A(u_1+\eta)\otimes\tilde A(u_2) with the γ=2/N\gamma=2/N weight is satisfied for N=2N=2 but not for N≥3N\ge 3, and offers no analytic explanation. The paper also connects the case-2 vectors, when NN is a perfect square, to the classical (Mumford) representation of the finite Heisenberg group — the group generated by the shift operator Sbf(u)=f(u+b)S_b f(u)=f(u+b) and the quasi-periodic multiplication operator Taf(u)=eπia2τ+2πiauf(u+aτ)T_a f(u)=e^{\pi i a^2\tau+2\pi i a u}f(u+a\tau) — on theta functions, but that identification inherits the same unproven status of the underlying algebra.

Problem Statement

Replace the quasi-periodicity heuristics and REDUCE numerics of Shigemoto's Belavin-model construction by a rigorous analytic theory, with the explicit definitions of arXiv:1603.01079 (case-1 weight S(u)S(u) of Eqs. (4.2)–(4.4) and case-1 state vector of Eqs. (4.29)–(4.39) in section 4.3, case-2 state vector A~(u)\tilde A(u) of section 4.5 and case-2 weight S~(u)\tilde S(u) of Eq. (4.50), Zamolodchikov algebras Eqs. (4.22)/(4.40) and (4.53)) or an explicitly demonstrated equivalent reformulation:

  1. Prove or disprove that the case-1 state vector, with components θa/N,Nk/(N−1)(u;Nτ/(N−1))\theta_{a/N,Nk/(N-1)}(u;N\tau/(N-1)) and the γ=1\gamma=1 weight, satisfies the Zamolodchikov algebra for every integer N≥2N\ge 2, and prove or disprove the completeness (linear independence and spanning) of the constructed vector set that is needed to deduce the Yang–Baxter equation from the algebra — specifying explicitly the family of vectors Ak(u)A_k(u) (the range of the label kk) and the target space that the completeness claim concerns.

  2. Determine, with proof, the set of integers N≥2N\ge 2 for which the case-2 state vector, with components θa/N,0(u;Nτ)\theta_{a/N,0}(u;N\tau) and the γ=2/N\gamma=2/N weight, satisfies the Zamolodchikov algebra: give an analytic proof of the numerically observed validity at N=2N=2, and settle whether the algebra fails for every N≥3N\ge 3 or holds for further values of NN.

These two parts form one objective: an exact, proof-based characterization of when the theta-function state-vector construction yields a Zamolodchikov algebra for the Belavin model, so that the integrability argument no longer rests on numerical spot checks.
