Shigemoto's construction of the Belavin vertex model builds candidate Zamolodchikov-algebra state vectors from theta functions with characteristics; quasi-periodicity closure leaves exactly two cases, and for the alternative case-2 construction (components , weight normalization ) the algebra is verified only numerically by the REDUCE computer-algebra system: it holds at and fails for , with no analytic explanation, while even the standard case-1 construction is supported only by quasi-periodicity matching plus an undelivered completeness claim. The problem asks for a rigorous analytic determination: prove the case-1 algebra and the completeness of its vector set for all , and determine exactly the set of for which the case-2 algebra holds.
Background
Exactly solvable ("integrable") two-dimensional statistical models are lattice models whose local Boltzmann weights satisfy the Yang–Baxter equation, a functional equation that guarantees commuting transfer matrices and hence exact solvability. The Belavin model (A. A. Belavin, 1981) is the -symmetric vertex model — an edge-interaction model whose edge states take values and whose weights carry a pair of clock-type symmetries — and it provides the general elliptic solution of the Yang–Baxter equation, with weights built from theta functions with characteristics: . These functions are quasi-periodic rather than periodic: shifting by or by multiplies them by explicit elementary factors. A classical route to such solutions for vertex models, which the source itself credits to Cherednik, is the Zamolodchikov algebra: one seeks a vector and a weight matrix obeying , where is the crossing parameter; if vectors satisfying this algebra form a complete (linearly independent, spanning) set, the Yang–Baxter equation for follows. Shigemoto's review (arXiv:1603.01079) pursues this route for the Belavin model with state vectors whose components are , , where scales the second characteristic and the modulus, and with weights , where and are the clock and shift matrices (, ) generating the "cyclic representation of SU(2)" that the paper advocates as the common origin of integrability, and with , where is a normalization constant left free at this stage and fixed afterwards by quasi-periodicity matching. Requiring the family of vectors to be closed under quasi-periodic shifts , with shift prefactors independent of , leaves exactly two possibilities: case 1, , whose state vector has components and forces ; and case 2, , whose state vector has components and forces . The paper establishes only that both sides of the algebra have matching quasi-periodicity (which is what fixes in each case) and asserts completeness without proof. For case 2 it reports a computer-algebra check (using the REDUCE system) that the "another Zamolodchikov algebra" with the weight is satisfied for but not for , and offers no analytic explanation. The paper also connects the case-2 vectors, when is a perfect square, to the classical (Mumford) representation of the finite Heisenberg group — the group generated by the shift operator and the quasi-periodic multiplication operator — on theta functions, but that identification inherits the same unproven status of the underlying algebra.
Problem Statement
Replace the quasi-periodicity heuristics and REDUCE numerics of Shigemoto's Belavin-model construction by a rigorous analytic theory, with the explicit definitions of arXiv:1603.01079 (case-1 weight of Eqs. (4.2)–(4.4) and case-1 state vector of Eqs. (4.29)–(4.39) in section 4.3, case-2 state vector of section 4.5 and case-2 weight of Eq. (4.50), Zamolodchikov algebras Eqs. (4.22)/(4.40) and (4.53)) or an explicitly demonstrated equivalent reformulation:
-
Prove or disprove that the case-1 state vector, with components and the weight, satisfies the Zamolodchikov algebra for every integer , and prove or disprove the completeness (linear independence and spanning) of the constructed vector set that is needed to deduce the Yang–Baxter equation from the algebra — specifying explicitly the family of vectors (the range of the label ) and the target space that the completeness claim concerns.
-
Determine, with proof, the set of integers for which the case-2 state vector, with components and the weight, satisfies the Zamolodchikov algebra: give an analytic proof of the numerically observed validity at , and settle whether the algebra fails for every or holds for further values of .
These two parts form one objective: an exact, proof-based characterization of when the theta-function state-vector construction yields a Zamolodchikov algebra for the Belavin model, so that the integrability argument no longer rests on numerical spot checks.
