The open spin-1/2 XXZ chain with generic non-diagonal integrable boundary fields breaks the U(1) spin-conservation symmetry, so the algebraic Bethe ansatz has no reference state, and its most basic rigorous foundation - completeness, the statement that the Bethe equations yield all and only the eigenvalues and eigenvectors - has never been established for this model. Chernyak, Gainutdinov, Jacobsen and Saleur (SIGMA 19 (2023) 046) re-derived the Bethe equations under the Nepomechie boundary constraint by realizing the Hamiltonian inside a -invariant chain with infinite-dimensional Verma modules at both ends and proving a Schur-Weyl duality with the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra. They conjectured that in each magnon sector the sector Bethe equations have exactly distinct solutions with linearly independent highest-weight eigenvectors, and that for they are equivalent to the -root functional (TQ) Bethe equations carrying an inhomogeneous term . Both conjectures remain open: separation-of-variables methods prove complete spectral characterization only for inhomogeneous chains, and the 2025-2026 rational -system literature confirms completeness numerically while stating that rigorous proofs remain open. The problem is to prove or refute these completeness, counting, and formulation-equivalence conjectures for the homogeneous chain, for all chain lengths and sectors, under explicit genericity conditions.
Background
The model. The spin-1/2 XXZ chain on a segment of sites has Hamiltonian
where are Pauli matrices and parametrizes the anisotropy. Integrable (commuting-transfer-matrix) boundary terms are encoded by Sklyanin's reflection algebra through two boundary matrices ("K-matrices") at the two ends; the most general such Hamiltonian depends on , on four complex boundary parameters , and on the rapidity difference alone (the spectrum is independent of the overall spin rotation angle ). When both K-matrices are diagonal, the total magnetization is conserved - a U(1) symmetry - and the algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA) diagonalizes the transfer matrix starting from the fully polarized reference state ("pseudovacuum"). When a boundary matrix is non-diagonal - generic integrable boundary fields not aligned with the anisotropy axis - U(1) is broken, no reference state exists, and the traditional ABA fails.
History of the non-diagonal case. For the resulting Hamiltonian the spectrum was obtained by indirect routes: gauge/face transformations (Cao-Lin-Shi-Wang 2003), functional TQ (Baxter) relations - functional equations relating the transfer-matrix eigenvalue to an auxiliary polynomial whose zeros are the Bethe roots - carrying an inhomogeneous term (Nepomechie 2003-2004), coordinate Bethe ansatz (diagonalization in a fixed spin basis), modified ABA, the -Onsager algebra (an infinite-dimensional algebra whose generators commute with the Hamiltonian and encode its spectrum), and separation of variables (SoV, a method representing the transfer matrix as multiplication operators in a separated basis). The Nepomechie constraint is the linear relation
among the boundary parameters, the chain length, and the magnon number - the number of Bethe roots, i.e. of quasi-particle excitations - (in Nepomechie's parametrization ); when it holds, the Bethe ansatz equations (BAE) take a homogeneous form on rapidities, while for generic unconstrained parameters the functional equations carry an additive inhomogeneous term and the number of roots is fixed. Kitanine-Maillet-Niccoli (2014) proved by SoV that, for general inhomogeneous chains with the most general boundaries, this functional equation completely characterizes the transfer-matrix spectrum; for the physically relevant homogeneous chain, completeness is supported there only by numerics.
The construction. Chernyak-Gainutdinov-Jacobsen-Saleur (2023) gave the first fully rigorous standard ABA derivation under the Nepomechie constraint. Here is the q-deformation of the enveloping algebra of (with ), and its Verma modules are the infinite-dimensional highest-weight representations labelled by a complex "spin" (a highest-weight vector is annihilated by the raising operator, and its orbit under the lowering operator generates the whole module). The Hamiltonian is realized as a representation of the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra - the diagram algebra generated by the Temperley-Lieb generators (contracting neighboring spins into singlets) and two "blob" generators marking the two boundaries, which also describes loop models with two marked boundary points - evaluated inside the chain
whose Hamiltonian commutes with . A Schur-Weyl duality (an analogue of the classical duality between a group action and its centralizer algebra) between and the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra yields the sector decomposition
(The duality is proven for even ; the authors state that the construction extends rather straightforwardly to odd , and the Bethe-ansatz section of the paper does not assume even .) In each sector the ABA, using the highest-weight vector as reference, produces eigenvalues and the BAE (3.60) on roots ,
with boundary reflection amplitudes ; for the dual equations (3.61) are obtained by with roots.
What completeness means. Solutions are counted up to permutations of the roots and up to and (), i.e. as unordered finite root sets in the fundamental domain ; roots sent to infinity generate descendant (non-highest-weight) states and are excluded from the count. Rigorous completeness theorems - proofs that a system of BAE has exactly the predicted number of solutions with linearly independent eigenvectors - exist only for a handful of models, all with U(1) symmetry (periodic rational chains: Chernyak-Leurent-Volin 2022; Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko 2009). For the non-diagonal open XXZ chain the source paper states the counting conjecture above and a second conjecture: for , the -root BAE (3.60) should be equivalent to the -root TQ/functional BAE with inhomogeneous term
fixed by matching the large- asymptotics of the transfer matrix. Numerical evidence (Nepomechie-Ravanini 2003; the 2025-2026 rational -system computations) supports both conjectures; no proof or counterexample is known.
Problem Statement
Prove, or disprove by a certified counterexample, the two conjectures left open by Chernyak-Gainutdinov-Jacobsen-Saleur (SIGMA 19 (2023) 046) for the homogeneous open spin-1/2 XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary terms subject to the Nepomechie constraint:
(i) Completeness and counting. For every chain length , every magnon number , and generic parameter values ( not a root of unity, , generic ), the Bethe ansatz equations (3.60) on roots have exactly (for ) or (for ) distinct solutions, counted as unordered finite root sets in the fundamental domain (quotienting and ), and the corresponding Bethe eigenvectors are linearly independent highest-weight vectors; moreover, for the dual equations (3.61) (with and roots) have, by the same conjecture applied to the dual sector, exactly distinct solutions with linearly independent highest-weight eigenvectors - note that - so that the two families together produce the complete spectrum of : all eigenvalues, with the Bethe vectors and their descendants forming an eigenbasis.
(ii) Equivalence of formulations. For every , the -root BAE (3.60) are equivalent to the -root TQ/functional Bethe equations with the inhomogeneous term fixed by the asymptotic matching formula above, in the sense that the two systems yield the same set of transfer-matrix eigenvalues, with an explicit description of the correspondence between their solution sets, including the fate of roots sent to infinity.
A positive resolution must hold for all and under explicitly stated genericity hypotheses. Since both conjectures are universal statements over chain lengths and generic parameter values, a single certified instance inside the generic regime in which the predicted count fails, the Bethe eigenvectors are linearly dependent, or the two formulations produce different eigenvalue sets refutes the corresponding conjecture.
