The open spin-1/2 XXZ chain with generic non-diagonal integrable boundary fields breaks the U(1) spin-conservation symmetry, so the algebraic Bethe ansatz has no reference state, and its most basic rigorous foundation - completeness, the statement that the Bethe equations yield all and only the eigenvalues and eigenvectors - has never been established for this model. Chernyak, Gainutdinov, Jacobsen and Saleur (SIGMA 19 (2023) 046) re-derived the Bethe equations under the Nepomechie boundary constraint by realizing the Hamiltonian inside a Uqsl2U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2-invariant chain with infinite-dimensional Verma modules at both ends and proving a Schur-Weyl duality with the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra. They conjectured that in each magnon sector MM the sector Bethe equations have exactly dMd_M distinct solutions with linearly independent highest-weight eigenvectors, and that for M≥NM\ge N they are equivalent to the NN-root functional (TQ) Bethe equations carrying an inhomogeneous term cc. Both conjectures remain open: separation-of-variables methods prove complete spectral characterization only for inhomogeneous chains, and the 2025-2026 rational QQ-system literature confirms completeness numerically while stating that rigorous proofs remain open. The problem is to prove or refute these completeness, counting, and formulation-equivalence conjectures for the homogeneous chain, for all chain lengths and sectors, under explicit genericity conditions.

Background

The model. The spin-1/2 XXZ chain on a segment of NN sites has Hamiltonian

H=12∑i=1N−1(σxiσxi+1+σyiσyi+1+Δ σziσzi+1)+boundary terms,Δ=cosh⁡h,H=\tfrac12\sum_{i=1}^{N-1}\left(\sigma_x^i\sigma_x^{i+1}+\sigma_y^i\sigma_y^{i+1}+\Delta\,\sigma_z^i\sigma_z^{i+1}\right)+\text{boundary terms},\qquad \Delta=\cosh h,

where σx,y,z\sigma_{x,y,z} are Pauli matrices and h∈Ch\in\mathbb{C} parametrizes the anisotropy. Integrable (commuting-transfer-matrix) boundary terms are encoded by Sklyanin's reflection algebra through two 2×22\times2 boundary matrices ("K-matrices") at the two ends; the most general such Hamiltonian depends on hh, on four complex boundary parameters δl/r,κl/r\delta_{l/r},\kappa_{l/r}, and on the rapidity difference Θ=θl−θr\Theta=\theta_l-\theta_r alone (the spectrum is independent of the overall spin rotation angle 12(θl+θr)\tfrac12(\theta_l+\theta_r)). When both K-matrices are diagonal, the total magnetization Sz=12∑iσziS^z=\frac12\sum_i\sigma_z^i is conserved - a U(1) symmetry - and the algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA) diagonalizes the transfer matrix starting from the fully polarized reference state ("pseudovacuum"). When a boundary matrix is non-diagonal - generic integrable boundary fields not aligned with the anisotropy axis - U(1) is broken, no reference state exists, and the traditional ABA fails.

History of the non-diagonal case. For the resulting Hamiltonian Hn.d.H_{\rm n.d.} the spectrum was obtained by indirect routes: gauge/face transformations (Cao-Lin-Shi-Wang 2003), functional TQ (Baxter) relations - functional equations relating the transfer-matrix eigenvalue t(u)t(u) to an auxiliary polynomial Q(u)Q(u) whose zeros are the Bethe roots - carrying an inhomogeneous term (Nepomechie 2003-2004), coordinate Bethe ansatz (diagonalization in a fixed spin basis), modified ABA, the qq-Onsager algebra (an infinite-dimensional algebra whose generators commute with the Hamiltonian and encode its spectrum), and separation of variables (SoV, a method representing the transfer matrix as multiplication operators in a separated basis). The Nepomechie constraint is the linear relation

δl+κl+δr+κr±Θ=2M+1−N∈Z\delta_l+\kappa_l+\delta_r+\kappa_r\pm\Theta=2M+1-N\in\mathbb{Z}

among the boundary parameters, the chain length, and the magnon number MM - the number of Bethe roots, i.e. of quasi-particle excitations - (in Nepomechie's parametrization k=2M+1−Nk=2M+1-N); when it holds, the Bethe ansatz equations (BAE) take a homogeneous form on MM rapidities, while for generic unconstrained parameters the functional equations carry an additive inhomogeneous term cc and the number of roots is fixed. Kitanine-Maillet-Niccoli (2014) proved by SoV that, for general inhomogeneous chains with the most general boundaries, this functional equation completely characterizes the transfer-matrix spectrum; for the physically relevant homogeneous chain, completeness is supported there only by numerics.

The Uqsl2U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2 construction. Chernyak-Gainutdinov-Jacobsen-Saleur (2023) gave the first fully rigorous standard ABA derivation under the Nepomechie constraint. Here Uqsl2U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2 is the q-deformation of the enveloping algebra of sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2 (with q=eh\mathfrak{q}=e^h), and its Verma modules Vα\mathcal{V}_\alpha are the infinite-dimensional highest-weight representations labelled by a complex "spin" α\alpha (a highest-weight vector is annihilated by the raising operator, and its orbit under the lowering operator generates the whole module). The Hamiltonian Hn.d.H_{\rm n.d.} is realized as a representation of the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra - the diagram algebra generated by the Temperley-Lieb generators eie_i (contracting neighboring spins into singlets) and two "blob" generators bl,brb_l,b_r marking the two boundaries, which also describes loop models with two marked boundary points - evaluated inside the chain

H2b=Vαl⊗(C2)⊗N⊗Vαr,\mathcal{H}_{2b}=\mathcal{V}_{\alpha_l}\otimes(\mathbb{C}^2)^{\otimes N}\otimes\mathcal{V}_{\alpha_r},

whose Hamiltonian H2bH_{2b} commutes with Uqsl2U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2. A Schur-Weyl duality (an analogue of the classical duality between a group action and its centralizer algebra) between Uqsl2U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2 and the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra yields the sector decomposition

H2b=⨁M≥0HM⊗Vαl+αr−1+N−2M,dM:=dim⁡HM=∑k=0M(Nk)  (0≤M≤N),dM=2N  (M≥N).\mathcal{H}_{2b}=\bigoplus_{M\ge0}\mathcal{H}_M\otimes\mathcal{V}_{\alpha_l+\alpha_r-1+N-2M},\qquad d_M:=\dim\mathcal{H}_M=\sum_{k=0}^{M}\binom{N}{k}\ \ (0\le M\le N),\quad d_M=2^N\ \ (M\ge N).

(The duality is proven for even NN; the authors state that the construction extends rather straightforwardly to odd NN, and the Bethe-ansatz section of the paper does not assume even NN.) In each sector the ABA, using the highest-weight vector as reference, produces eigenvalues and the BAE (3.60) on MM roots v1,…,vMv_1,\dots,v_M,

Δl(vm)Δr(vm)Δl(−vm)Δr(−vm)(sinh⁡(vm+h/2)sinh⁡(vm−h/2))2N=∏k=1k≠mMsinh⁡(vm−vk+h)sinh⁡(vm+vk+h)sinh⁡(vm−vk−h)sinh⁡(vm+vk−h),\frac{\Delta_l(v_m)\Delta_r(v_m)}{\Delta_l(-v_m)\Delta_r(-v_m)}\left(\frac{\sinh(v_m+h/2)}{\sinh(v_m-h/2)}\right)^{2N}=\prod_{\substack{k=1\\ k\ne m}}^{M}\frac{\sinh(v_m-v_k+h)\sinh(v_m+v_k+h)}{\sinh(v_m-v_k-h)\sinh(v_m+v_k-h)},

with boundary reflection amplitudes Δl/r(u)=1−μl/rsinh⁡(u−h/2)sinh⁡(u+h(αl/r−1/2))sinh⁡h sinh⁡(hαl/r)\Delta_{l/r}(u)=1-\mu_{l/r}\frac{\sinh(u-h/2)\sinh(u+h(\alpha_{l/r}-1/2))}{\sinh h\,\sinh(h\alpha_{l/r})}; for 0≤M≤N−10\le M\le N-1 the dual equations (3.61) are obtained by αl/r,μl/r↦−αl/r,−μl/r\alpha_{l/r},\mu_{l/r}\mapsto-\alpha_{l/r},-\mu_{l/r} with Mˉ=N−M−1\bar M=N-M-1 roots.

What completeness means. Solutions are counted up to permutations of the roots and up to v↦−vv\mapsto-v and v↦v+iπrv\mapsto v+i\pi r (r∈Zr\in\mathbb{Z}), i.e. as unordered finite root sets in the fundamental domain S+={v : Re v≥0, −π/2≤Im v<π/2}∖{0}S_+=\{v\,:\,\mathrm{Re}\,v\ge0,\ -\pi/2\le\mathrm{Im}\,v<\pi/2\}\setminus\{0\}; roots sent to infinity generate descendant (non-highest-weight) states and are excluded from the count. Rigorous completeness theorems - proofs that a system of BAE has exactly the predicted number of solutions with linearly independent eigenvectors - exist only for a handful of models, all with U(1) symmetry (periodic rational chains: Chernyak-Leurent-Volin 2022; Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko 2009). For the non-diagonal open XXZ chain the source paper states the counting conjecture above and a second conjecture: for M≥NM\ge N, the MM-root BAE (3.60) should be equivalent to the NN-root TQ/functional BAE with inhomogeneous term

c=μlμr sinh⁡(h(N−M))sinh⁡(hαl+hαr−h(M+1))sinh⁡2h sinh⁡(hαl)sinh⁡(hαr),c=\frac{\mu_l\mu_r\,\sinh(h(N-M))\sinh(h\alpha_l+h\alpha_r-h(M+1))}{\sinh^2h\,\sinh(h\alpha_l)\sinh(h\alpha_r)},

fixed by matching the large-uu asymptotics of the transfer matrix. Numerical evidence (Nepomechie-Ravanini 2003; the 2025-2026 rational QQ-system computations) supports both conjectures; no proof or counterexample is known.

Problem Statement

Prove, or disprove by a certified counterexample, the two conjectures left open by Chernyak-Gainutdinov-Jacobsen-Saleur (SIGMA 19 (2023) 046) for the homogeneous open spin-1/2 XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary terms subject to the Nepomechie constraint:

(i) Completeness and counting. For every chain length N≥1N\ge1, every magnon number M≥0M\ge0, and generic parameter values (q=eh\mathfrak{q}=e^h not a root of unity, qαl/r,qαl+αr∉±qZ\mathfrak{q}^{\alpha_{l/r}},\mathfrak{q}^{\alpha_l+\alpha_r}\notin\pm\mathfrak{q}^{\mathbb{Z}}, generic μl/r\mu_{l/r}), the Bethe ansatz equations (3.60) on MM roots have exactly dM=∑k=0M(Nk)d_M=\sum_{k=0}^{M}\binom{N}{k} (for 0≤M≤N0\le M\le N) or dM=2Nd_M=2^N (for M≥NM\ge N) distinct solutions, counted as unordered finite root sets in the fundamental domain S+S_+ (quotienting v∼−vv\sim-v and v∼v+iπrv\sim v+i\pi r), and the corresponding Bethe eigenvectors are linearly independent Uqsl2U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2 highest-weight vectors; moreover, for 0≤M≤N−10\le M\le N-1 the dual equations (3.61) (with αl/r,μl/r↦−αl/r,−μl/r\alpha_{l/r},\mu_{l/r}\mapsto-\alpha_{l/r},-\mu_{l/r} and Mˉ=N−M−1\bar M=N-M-1 roots) have, by the same conjecture applied to the dual sector, exactly dMˉd_{\bar M} distinct solutions with linearly independent highest-weight eigenvectors - note that dM+dMˉ=2Nd_M+d_{\bar M}=2^N - so that the two families together produce the complete spectrum of Hn.d.H_{\rm n.d.}: all 2N2^N eigenvalues, with the Bethe vectors and their Uqsl2U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2 descendants forming an eigenbasis.

(ii) Equivalence of formulations. For every M≥NM\ge N, the MM-root BAE (3.60) are equivalent to the NN-root TQ/functional Bethe equations with the inhomogeneous term cc fixed by the asymptotic matching formula above, in the sense that the two systems yield the same set of transfer-matrix eigenvalues, with an explicit description of the correspondence between their solution sets, including the fate of roots sent to infinity.

A positive resolution must hold for all NN and MM under explicitly stated genericity hypotheses. Since both conjectures are universal statements over chain lengths and generic parameter values, a single certified instance inside the generic regime in which the predicted count fails, the Bethe eigenvectors are linearly dependent, or the two formulations produce different eigenvalue sets refutes the corresponding conjecture.
