For a pure motive M/QM/\mathbb{Q} of weight ⩽−1\leqslant -1 whose pp-adic realization VV is semistable at pp and satisfies standard regularity hypotheses, and for a regular (φ,N)(\varphi,N)-submodule DD of the semistable module Dst(V)D_{\rm st}(V), Benois formulated (arXiv:1404.7386, published in LMS Lecture Note Series 420) a version of the Iwasawa main conjecture for the Selmer complex SCIw(V,D)\mathrm{SC}_{\rm Iw}(V,D): one expects a pp-adic LL-function Lp(M,D,s)=fD(χ(γ0)s−1)L_p(M,D,s)=f_D(\chi(\gamma_0)^s-1) with fDf_D in the distribution algebra H\mathscr{H}, interpolating algebraic parts of the complex LL-function (with an Euler-type factor involving the ℓ\ell-invariant in the semistable non-crystalline case), and conjectures that HIw1(V,D)=0H^1_{\rm Iw}(V,D)=0 and that HIw2(V,D)H^2_{\rm Iw}(V,D) is H\mathscr{H}-torsion with charH(HIw2(V,D))=(fD)\mathrm{char}_{\mathscr{H}}(H^2_{\rm Iw}(V,D))=(f_D). This motive-level conjecture uniformly generalizes Greenberg's ordinary main conjecture and Perrin-Riou's crystalline formulation. As of 2026 it is proved only in fragments: one divisibility for modular forms (Kato), the ordinary GL2\mathrm{GL}_2 case under technical conditions (Skinner–Urban, completed for good-ordinary elliptic curves by Burungale–Castella–Skinner in 2025), and conditional extra-zero results for specific families. For general motives — in particular semistable non-crystalline VV, where even the analytic object and its interpolation are conjectural — the problem is open.

Background

Let pp be a prime and let M/QM/\mathbb{Q} be a pure motive of weight w⩽−1w\leqslant -1 (for example M=hi(X)(m)M=h^i(X)(m), the ii-th cohomology of a smooth projective variety XX twisted by the Tate motive), with pp-adic realization VV: a finite-dimensional Qp\mathbb{Q}_p-vector space with a continuous action of the absolute Galois group GQ,SG_{\mathbb{Q},S} ramified only outside a finite set SS containing pp. Assume VV is semistable at pp; then pp-adic Hodge theory attaches to it the semistable module Dst(V)D_{\rm st}(V), a filtered Qp\mathbb{Q}_p-vector space carrying a Frobenius φ\varphi and a nilpotent monodromy operator NN satisfying Nφ=pφNN\varphi=p\varphi N; VV is crystalline exactly when N=0N=0. Write Dc(V)=Dst(V)N=0D_c(V)=D_{\rm st}(V)^{N=0}.

Iwasawa theory studies VV over the cyclotomic Zp\mathbb{Z}_p-extension Q∞/Q\mathbb{Q}_\infty/\mathbb{Q} (the unique Zp\mathbb{Z}_p-extension inside the field of all pp-power roots of unity). Fix a topological generator γ0\gamma_0 of Γ1=Gal(Q∞/Q(μp))≅1+pZp\Gamma_1=\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}_\infty/\mathbb{Q}(\mu_p))\cong 1+p\mathbb{Z}_p and let Λ=Zp[[Γ1]]\Lambda=\mathbb{Z}_p[[\Gamma_1]] be the Iwasawa algebra; H\mathscr{H} denotes the algebra of pp-adic distributions on Γ1\Gamma_1, the natural completion of Λ[1/p]\Lambda[1/p] for which Lazard's theory assigns to every coadmissible torsion H\mathscr{H}-module (coadmissible meaning, roughly, a module obtained from finitely generated Λ\Lambda-modules by inverting pp and completing — the class on which H\mathscr{H} behaves like a principal ideal domain) a well-defined characteristic ideal charH\mathrm{char}_{\mathscr{H}}. For a GQG_{\mathbb{Q}}-stable lattice T⊂VT\subset V, the Iwasawa cohomology HIwi(V)=lim←⁡nHi(GQ,S, T⊗Zp[μpn]∨)H^i_{\rm Iw}(V)=\varprojlim_n H^i(G_{\mathbb{Q},S},\,T\otimes\mathbb{Z}_p[\mu_{p^n}]^{\vee}) is a finitely generated H\mathscr{H}-module.

The Selmer complex formalism of Nekovář refines Selmer groups into objects of the derived category: given cohomological local conditions at the places of SS, the Selmer complex is the mapping cone of the sum of the localization maps to those conditions, shifted by one. Benois imposes, at places v≠pv\neq p, the Bloch–Kato condition Hf1H^1_f (the subgroup of local cohomology classified by the pp-adic exponential map of de Rham cohomology), and at pp the condition defined by the Iwasawa cohomology RΓIw(D)R\Gamma_{\rm Iw}(\mathbf{D}) of a (φ,Γ)(\varphi,\Gamma)-module D\mathbf{D} — the Robba-ring avatar of a pp-adic representation of GQpG_{\mathbb{Q}_p} (an étale module over the ring of Laurent series convergent on an annulus, with commuting Frobenius and Γ\Gamma-actions, a category equivalent to pp-adic representations of GQpG_{\mathbb{Q}_p}).

The local condition at pp is determined by a regular submodule. Following Perrin-Riou, a (φ,N)(\varphi,N)-submodule D⊂Dst(V)D\subset D_{\rm st}(V) is regular if D∩Fil0Dst(V)=0D\cap\mathrm{Fil}^0 D_{\rm st}(V)=0 and the regulator map

rV,D: Hf1(Q,V)⟶Dst(V)/(Fil0Dst(V)+D)r_{V,D}:\,H^1_f(\mathbb{Q},V)\longrightarrow D_{\rm st}(V)/(\mathrm{Fil}^0D_{\rm st}(V)+D)

is an isomorphism (weight ⩽−2\leqslant -2), or if the projection D→tV=DdR(V)/Fil0D\to t_V=D_{\rm dR}(V)/\mathrm{Fil}^0 is an isomorphism (weight −1-1). Regular submodules generalize Greenberg's ordinarity filtration — every semistable representation is ordinary in Greenberg's sense — and interpolate between Bloch–Kato and Greenberg local conditions; to DD one attaches canonically a (φ,Γ)(\varphi,\Gamma)-submodule D\mathbf{D} of Drig†(V)D^{\dagger}_{\rm rig}(V), the (φ,Γ)(\varphi,\Gamma)-module of VV.

On the analytic side, the expectation is that each regular DD determines a pp-adic LL-function Lp(M,D,s)=fD(χ(γ0)s−1)L_p(M,D,s)=f_D(\chi(\gamma_0)^s-1), fD∈Hf_D\in\mathscr{H}, interpolating algebraic parts of the special values of the complex LL-function L(M,s)L(M,s): at s=0s=0,

Lp∗(M,D,0)Ωp(M,D)=E(V,D) L∗(M,0)Ω∞(M),\frac{L^*_p(M,D,0)}{\Omega_p(M,D)}=\mathscr{E}(V,D)\,\frac{L^*(M,0)}{\Omega_\infty(M)},

where Ω∞(M)\Omega_\infty(M) is the transcendental period predicted by the Beilinson–Deligne conjecture on special values, Ωp(M,D)\Omega_p(M,D) is the determinant of the regulator rV,Dr_{V,D} (weight ⩽−2\leqslant -2) or of the pp-adic height pairing ⟨ , ⟩V,D\langle\,,\,\rangle_{V,D} (weight −1-1), and E(V,D)\mathscr{E}(V,D) is an Euler-like factor at pp, given in the crystalline case by Perrin-Riou's conjectural formula. Extra (trivial) zeros are compatible with the vanishing hypothesis C3) Dc(V)φ=1=0D_c(V)^{\varphi=1}=0 imposed below: they are detected not on Dc(V)D_c(V) itself, but on subquotients of Drig†(V)D^{\dagger}_{\rm rig}(V). To a regular DD one attaches an increasing filtration (Di)i=−22(D_i)_{i=-2}^{2} of Dst(V)D_{\rm st}(V) with D0=DD_0=D, which induces a filtration of Drig†(V)D^{\dagger}_{\rm rig}(V); write W=D1/D−1W=D_1/D_{-1} and W0W_0 for the graded piece with Dst(W0)φ=p−1=Dst(W0)D_{\rm st}(W_0)^{\varphi=p^{-1}}=D_{\rm st}(W_0). In case a) Dst(V)φ=1=0D_{\rm st}(V)^{\varphi=1}=0, so that W=W0W=W_0; in case b) Hf1(Q,V)=Hf1(Q,V∗(1))=0H^1_f(\mathbb{Q},V)=H^1_f(\mathbb{Q},V^*(1))=0 and, under a structural condition M) of the source, WW contains a subquotient M♭M^{\flat} fitting into an exact sequence 0→M0→M♭→M1→00\to M_0\to M^{\flat}\to M_1\to 0 with rank(M0)=rank(M1)\mathrm{rank}(M_0)=\mathrm{rank}(M_1) (the typical example being V=Wf(k)V=W_f(k), where WfW_f is the pp-adic representation attached to a split multiplicative newform ff of weight 2k2k on Γ0(N)\Gamma_0(N) with p∣Np\mid N). In both cases LpL_p is expected to acquire a zero of order e=rank(W0)e=\mathrm{rank}(W_0) at s=0s=0, governed by the ℓ\ell-invariant ℓ(V,D)\ell(V,D) — a pp-adic analytic invariant of the local representation at pp, defined as a determinant on Dc(W0)D_c(W_0) in case a) and on Dc(M1)D_c(M_1) in case b). The precise leading-term formula is the Extra Zero Conjecture:

lim⁡s→0Lp(M,D,s)se=ℓ(V,D) E+(V,D) Ωp(M,D) L(M,0)Ω∞(M),\lim_{s\to 0}\frac{L_p(M,D,s)}{s^{e}}=\ell(V,D)\,\mathscr{E}^{+}(V,D)\,\frac{\Omega_p(M,D)\,L(M,0)}{\Omega_\infty(M)},

where E+(V,D)\mathscr{E}^{+}(V,D) is obtained from E(V,D)\mathscr{E}(V,D) by excluding the zero factors. Following the source, this formula is written with L(M,0)L(M,0), whereas the interpolation formula above is written with the leading term L∗(M,0)L^*(M,0); the numerator carries the regulator factor Ωp(M,D)\Omega_p(M,D), which equals 11 in case b), where Hf1(Q,V)=Hf1(Q,V∗(1))=0H^1_f(\mathbb{Q},V)=H^1_f(\mathbb{Q},V^*(1))=0, but is the regulator determinant and generally nontrivial in case a).

At the time of the source paper (2014) the conjecture was known only in fragments: Greenberg's ordinary formulation; Kato's Euler system giving one divisibility for modular forms; Skinner–Urban's proof of both divisibilities for ordinary GL2\mathrm{GL}_2 under technical hypotheses; and compatibility with Perrin-Riou's crystalline theory via work of Pottharst. The nonvanishing of ℓ(V,D)\ell(V,D) was known only for Dirichlet motives (Ferrero–Greenberg) and for elliptic curves over Q\mathbb{Q} (Barré-Sirieix–Diaz–Gramain–Philibert).

Problem Statement

Let M/QM/\mathbb{Q} be a pure motive of weight ⩽−1\leqslant -1 containing no submotive isomorphic to Q(m)\mathbb{Q}(m), with pp-adic realization VV semistable at pp and satisfying:

  • C1) H0(Q,V)=H0(Q,V∗(1))=0H^0(\mathbb{Q},V)=H^0(\mathbb{Q},V^*(1))=0;
  • C2) the Frobenius φ\varphi on Dst(V)D_{\rm st}(V) is semisimple at the eigenvalues 11 and p−1p^{-1};
  • C3) Dc(V)φ=1=0D_c(V)^{\varphi=1}=0, where Dc(V)=Dst(V)N=0D_c(V)=D_{\rm st}(V)^{N=0};
  • C4) either Hf1(Q,V∗(1))=0H^1_f(\mathbb{Q},V^*(1))=0 (weight ⩽−2\leqslant -2 regime) or VV is self-dual (weight −1-1 regime).

Let D⊂Dst(V)D\subset D_{\rm st}(V) be a regular (φ,N)(\varphi,N)-submodule, D\mathbf{D} the attached (φ,Γ)(\varphi,\Gamma)-submodule of Drig†(V)D^{\dagger}_{\rm rig}(V), and HIwi(V,D)H^i_{\rm Iw}(V,D) the cohomology of the associated Selmer complex SCIw(V,D)\mathrm{SC}_{\rm Iw}(V,D) over H\mathscr{H}. Prove, or refute, Benois's Main Conjecture:

(i) HIw1(V,D)=0H^1_{\rm Iw}(V,D)=0;

(ii) HIw2(V,D)H^2_{\rm Iw}(V,D) is a coadmissible torsion H\mathscr{H}-module and

charH(HIw2(V,D))=(fD),\mathrm{char}_{\mathscr{H}}\left(H^2_{\rm Iw}(V,D)\right)=(f_D),

where fD∈Hf_D\in\mathscr{H} is defined by the pp-adic LL-function Lp(M,D,s)=fD(χ(γ0)s−1)L_p(M,D,s)=f_D(\chi(\gamma_0)^s-1), whose existence and interpolation property are part of the problem: at s=0s=0 it must satisfy

Lp∗(M,D,0)Ωp(M,D)=E(V,D) L∗(M,0)Ω∞(M),\frac{L^*_p(M,D,0)}{\Omega_p(M,D)}=\mathscr{E}(V,D)\,\frac{L^*(M,0)}{\Omega_\infty(M)},

with Ωp(M,D)\Omega_p(M,D) the determinant of the regulator rV,Dr_{V,D} (weight ⩽−2\leqslant -2) or of the pp-adic height pairing ⟨ , ⟩V,D\langle\,,\,\rangle_{V,D} (weight −1-1), and E(V,D)\mathscr{E}(V,D) the Euler-type factor at pp: Perrin-Riou's conjectural factor when VV is crystalline, and in the semistable non-crystalline case with extra zeros the factor given by the Extra Zero Conjecture described in the Background — Lp(M,D,s)L_p(M,D,s) vanishes to order e=rank(W0)e=\mathrm{rank}(W_0) at s=0s=0 and its leading term is ℓ(V,D) E+(V,D) Ωp(M,D) L(M,0)/Ω∞(M)\ell(V,D)\,\mathscr{E}^{+}(V,D)\,\Omega_p(M,D)\,L(M,0)/\Omega_\infty(M), with E+(V,D)\mathscr{E}^{+}(V,D) obtained from E(V,D)\mathscr{E}(V,D) by excluding the zero factors, Ωp(M,D)\Omega_p(M,D) the regulator factor defined above (equal to 11 in case b), generally nontrivial in case a)), and ℓ(V,D)\ell(V,D) the ℓ\ell-invariant attached to the subquotients W0W_0, respectively M1M_1, of the filtration induced by DD.

The common objective is the identification of the analytic pp-adic LL-function with the algebraic characteristic ideal for every regular submodule in the stated class; the construction of the analytic object, its interpolation property, and the ideal equality are jointly the content of the conjecture.
