For a pure motive of weight whose -adic realization is semistable at and satisfies standard regularity hypotheses, and for a regular -submodule of the semistable module , Benois formulated (arXiv:1404.7386, published in LMS Lecture Note Series 420) a version of the Iwasawa main conjecture for the Selmer complex : one expects a -adic -function with in the distribution algebra , interpolating algebraic parts of the complex -function (with an Euler-type factor involving the -invariant in the semistable non-crystalline case), and conjectures that and that is -torsion with . This motive-level conjecture uniformly generalizes Greenberg's ordinary main conjecture and Perrin-Riou's crystalline formulation. As of 2026 it is proved only in fragments: one divisibility for modular forms (Kato), the ordinary case under technical conditions (Skinner–Urban, completed for good-ordinary elliptic curves by Burungale–Castella–Skinner in 2025), and conditional extra-zero results for specific families. For general motives — in particular semistable non-crystalline , where even the analytic object and its interpolation are conjectural — the problem is open.
Background
Let be a prime and let be a pure motive of weight (for example , the -th cohomology of a smooth projective variety twisted by the Tate motive), with -adic realization : a finite-dimensional -vector space with a continuous action of the absolute Galois group ramified only outside a finite set containing . Assume is semistable at ; then -adic Hodge theory attaches to it the semistable module , a filtered -vector space carrying a Frobenius and a nilpotent monodromy operator satisfying ; is crystalline exactly when . Write .
Iwasawa theory studies over the cyclotomic -extension (the unique -extension inside the field of all -power roots of unity). Fix a topological generator of and let be the Iwasawa algebra; denotes the algebra of -adic distributions on , the natural completion of for which Lazard's theory assigns to every coadmissible torsion -module (coadmissible meaning, roughly, a module obtained from finitely generated -modules by inverting and completing — the class on which behaves like a principal ideal domain) a well-defined characteristic ideal . For a -stable lattice , the Iwasawa cohomology is a finitely generated -module.
The Selmer complex formalism of Nekovář refines Selmer groups into objects of the derived category: given cohomological local conditions at the places of , the Selmer complex is the mapping cone of the sum of the localization maps to those conditions, shifted by one. Benois imposes, at places , the Bloch–Kato condition (the subgroup of local cohomology classified by the -adic exponential map of de Rham cohomology), and at the condition defined by the Iwasawa cohomology of a -module — the Robba-ring avatar of a -adic representation of (an étale module over the ring of Laurent series convergent on an annulus, with commuting Frobenius and -actions, a category equivalent to -adic representations of ).
The local condition at is determined by a regular submodule. Following Perrin-Riou, a -submodule is regular if and the regulator map
is an isomorphism (weight ), or if the projection is an isomorphism (weight ). Regular submodules generalize Greenberg's ordinarity filtration — every semistable representation is ordinary in Greenberg's sense — and interpolate between Bloch–Kato and Greenberg local conditions; to one attaches canonically a -submodule of , the -module of .
On the analytic side, the expectation is that each regular determines a -adic -function , , interpolating algebraic parts of the special values of the complex -function : at ,
where is the transcendental period predicted by the Beilinson–Deligne conjecture on special values, is the determinant of the regulator (weight ) or of the -adic height pairing (weight ), and is an Euler-like factor at , given in the crystalline case by Perrin-Riou's conjectural formula. Extra (trivial) zeros are compatible with the vanishing hypothesis C3) imposed below: they are detected not on itself, but on subquotients of . To a regular one attaches an increasing filtration of with , which induces a filtration of ; write and for the graded piece with . In case a) , so that ; in case b) and, under a structural condition M) of the source, contains a subquotient fitting into an exact sequence with (the typical example being , where is the -adic representation attached to a split multiplicative newform of weight on with ). In both cases is expected to acquire a zero of order at , governed by the -invariant — a -adic analytic invariant of the local representation at , defined as a determinant on in case a) and on in case b). The precise leading-term formula is the Extra Zero Conjecture:
where is obtained from by excluding the zero factors. Following the source, this formula is written with , whereas the interpolation formula above is written with the leading term ; the numerator carries the regulator factor , which equals in case b), where , but is the regulator determinant and generally nontrivial in case a).
At the time of the source paper (2014) the conjecture was known only in fragments: Greenberg's ordinary formulation; Kato's Euler system giving one divisibility for modular forms; Skinner–Urban's proof of both divisibilities for ordinary under technical hypotheses; and compatibility with Perrin-Riou's crystalline theory via work of Pottharst. The nonvanishing of was known only for Dirichlet motives (Ferrero–Greenberg) and for elliptic curves over (Barré-Sirieix–Diaz–Gramain–Philibert).
Problem Statement
Let be a pure motive of weight containing no submotive isomorphic to , with -adic realization semistable at and satisfying:
- C1) ;
- C2) the Frobenius on is semisimple at the eigenvalues and ;
- C3) , where ;
- C4) either (weight regime) or is self-dual (weight regime).
Let be a regular -submodule, the attached -submodule of , and the cohomology of the associated Selmer complex over . Prove, or refute, Benois's Main Conjecture:
(i) ;
(ii) is a coadmissible torsion -module and
where is defined by the -adic -function , whose existence and interpolation property are part of the problem: at it must satisfy
with the determinant of the regulator (weight ) or of the -adic height pairing (weight ), and the Euler-type factor at : Perrin-Riou's conjectural factor when is crystalline, and in the semistable non-crystalline case with extra zeros the factor given by the Extra Zero Conjecture described in the Background — vanishes to order at and its leading term is , with obtained from by excluding the zero factors, the regulator factor defined above (equal to in case b), generally nontrivial in case a)), and the -invariant attached to the subquotients , respectively , of the filtration induced by .
The common objective is the identification of the analytic -adic -function with the algebraic characteristic ideal for every regular submodule in the stated class; the construction of the analytic object, its interpolation property, and the ideal equality are jointly the content of the conjecture.
