Li, Zhang, Cao, Yang and Wang (2026) constructed the first integrable stochastic process built from a Lie algebra beyond the family: a one-dimensional process with four particle types realizing the vector representation of , whose -matrix factorizes into a tensor product of two six-vertex -matrices, so that the Markov generator decomposes into two decoupled symmetric simple exclusion processes (and, in the asymmetric version added in the published revision, two decoupled asymmetric exclusion processes with independent rates). The same paper poses, as its stated next objective, the analogous construction for the twisted affine algebra : unlike the plain tensor-product factorization of , the -matrix factorizes into staggered () -matrices, so the expected stochastic process lives on two genuinely coupled lanes with inter-lane hopping — a candidate for the first two-dimensional integrable stochastic process. The task is to carry out that construction: an explicit stochastic gauge of the transfer matrix, a proof of integrability, an exact solution to the standard of the prototype, and a determination of whether the coupled-lane expectation is realized.
Background
Exactly solvable stochastic particle systems in one dimension draw their solvability from quantum integrability. The symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) is a continuous-time Markov chain on a lattice in which each particle hops to a left or right neighboring empty site at equal rates; allowing different left and right rates gives the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), a standard model of driven diffusive transport. Such processes are called integrable when their Markov generator coincides, up to normalization, with the derivative of the logarithm of a commuting family of transfer matrices at a regular point (a spectral-parameter value at which the transfer matrix is non-singular): an -matrix — a matrix acting on a pair of local or auxiliary spaces that satisfies the Yang-Baxter equation, the cubic identity guaranteeing commutativity of the transfer matrices built from it — is contracted into a monodromy matrix along the chain, and the trace of the monodromy defines the transfer matrix . Integrability then yields the exact solution through the (algebraic) Bethe ansatz: eigenvalues are parameterized by - relations in terms of Bethe roots satisfying Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs), from which eigenstates, steady states, and correlation functions follow. Open chains add boundary reservoirs through reflection -matrices solving the boundary Yang-Baxter (reflection) equation, the boundary analogue of the Yang-Baxter equation. All known integrable stochastic processes of this type — SSEP, ASEP, multi-species ASEP, the -Hahn process (a discrete-lattice exclusion process generalizing ASEP, with -deformed Hahn-distributed hopping probabilities), and the zero-range processes (hopping without exclusion constraints, rate depending only on the departure site) generated by the stochastic -matrix (a gauge in which the -matrix elements are transition probabilities) of — derive from -type algebras.
Li, Zhang, Cao, Yang and Wang (2026) gave the first construction beyond the family, based on the rank-two algebra (that is, , isomorphic to ). Their process has four particle types labeled by charges grouped into two colors; adjacent particles of different colors exchange positions at rate 1, and an adjacent same-color pair with distinct charges transforms into particles of the other color with distinct charges, also at rate 1; the dynamics conserves two independent charges and . The four states per site realize a tensor product of two two-dimensional spaces, and the -matrix factorizes as a tensor product of two six-vertex () -matrices; the transfer matrix therefore factorizes into two commuting transfer matrices and the Markov generator into two independent single-lane generators (, a Kronecker sum, i.e., the generator of two independent processes): the process is exactly two decoupled SSEPs, solvable by importing the standard Bethe-ansatz solution under periodic, twisted-flux (periodic chains closed with a twist matrix), and open (boundary-reservoir) boundary conditions; its asymmetric version, added in the published revision of the paper, is likewise two decoupled ASEPs with independent hopping rates.
The same paper leaves open the twisted case, which is the problem considered here. The twisted affine algebra — the affine Kac-Moody algebra obtained from the order-two diagram automorphism (a folding) of — has an -matrix acting on the same four-dimensional local space, but this -matrix is, up to a similarity transformation, a product of four (, i.e., anisotropic Heisenberg) -matrices whose spectral arguments are staggered by and which entangle the two tensor factors of the local space rather than respecting them (Nepomechie and Retore 2021). Correspondingly, the transfer matrix factorizes, after a global gauge transformation and for an even number of sites, into transfer matrices of two staggered chains (spectral parameters alternating between and on neighboring bonds) with a fixed spectral difference; the chain is also the algebraic relative of the staggered six-vertex model and of antiferromagnetic Potts models, with non-compact conformal field theory limits in the continuum (Robertson, Jacobsen and Saleur 2021). Since the plain tensor-product factorization is precisely what made the process split into two independent lanes, the interlaced staggering of the factorization is expected to prevent such a decoupling: in the authors' words, 'can lead to stochastic processes on two coupled lanes, where particles can hop between two lanes', suggesting 'two-dimensional' integrable stochastic processes. Nothing of the sort exists at present: the stochastic -matrix program remains exclusively -type, and the coupled two-channel exclusion processes studied in the driven-diffusion literature (Popkov and Schütz 2003 and subsequent traffic-model work) are not Bethe-ansatz solvable.
Problem Statement
The task, posed by Li, Zhang, Cao, Yang and Wang as their stated future objective, is to construct the integrable stochastic process associated with the twisted algebra and to investigate it to the standard set by their prototype. The common objective is an exactly solvable stochastic process of origin; a complete answer comprises three jointly supporting parts:
(a) The construction. Starting from the -matrix (equivalently from its product form in terms of staggered / -matrices), exhibit a similarity transformation and normalization under which the derivative of the logarithm of the transfer matrix at a regular point is a valid continuous-time Markov generator — real, non-negative off-diagonal transition rates with columns summing to zero, so that total probability is conserved — and identify the resulting local transition rules, particle types, and conserved quantities.
(b) Integrability and exact solution. Prove integrability (commutativity of the transfer matrices) for at least one class of boundary conditions — periodic, twisted-flux, or open with reflection -matrices solving the boundary Yang-Baxter equation — and derive the exact solution at the level of the prototype: eigenvalues through - relations and BAEs, Bethe or stationary states, and, where feasible, steady states and correlation functions; the staggered- factorization identities may be used if they help. The invoked standard of the prototype refers to this level of exact solution: the prototype additionally treated all three boundary classes and derived steady states in each, so extending the construction to further boundary classes, or obtaining steady states and correlation functions, moves an answer closer to the full prototype benchmark but is not required for completeness.
(c) Physical characterization. Determine whether the process realizes the conjectured two coupled lanes with inter-lane hopping — a genuinely two-dimensional integrable stochastic process — or whether it secretly decomposes into decoupled one-dimensional processes as in the case; if coupled, identify the inter-lane hopping rates and characterize the coupling (which transition rules mix the lanes, and what breaks a single-lane decomposition).
The broader aim stated in the source — integrable stochastic processes from other non--type and high-rank algebras — is open-ended context rather than part of this bounded deliverable.
