The Dotsenko-Fateev integrals are the hypergeometric multi-integrals that appear, in the Coulomb gas formalism, as matrix elements of screened vertex operators between free-field Fock modules, and their regularization is a required step in the free-field construction of the Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov (BPZ) minimal models of two-dimensional conformal field theory. Sussman (Lett. Math. Phys. 113 (2023), Paper No. 100) made this regularization rigorous by constructing explicit Pochhammer-type integration cycles: doubles of iteratedly blown-up cubes, mapped into the monodromy cover of the punctured-annulus configuration space, reproducing the integrals up to explicit trigonometric prefactors and thereby resolving the cycle-existence conjecture of Felder and Silvotti. The following three issues, left open by that paper, are examined here; none of them is resolved in the literature to date. First, the cycle maps are smooth for an explicit smooth structure but have not been proven to be immersions, and the locus of auxiliary-parameter values on which the differential degenerates or the image self-intersects is unknown. Second, the claimed extension of the regularization to the formal screened vertex-operator integrals - constructing them as bounded linear operators between Hilbert-space completions of Fock modules and assembling from them the BPZ minimal-model chiral algebras - is asserted to apply verbatim but has not been carried out anywhere. Third, the topology of the doubled integration domains is controlled only through the polygon genus formula g=k2k−3−2k−1+1g=k2^{k-3}-2^{k-1}+1 (exponentially growing), with no description for N >= 3 beyond the construction itself. The nearest related construction, by Nakano-Orosz Hunziker-Ros Camacho-Wood (Adv. Math. 2026), realizes screening-current integrals over Pochhammer contours as intertwining operators, but only in the adjacent admissible-level affine sl(2) / N=2 superconformal setting.

Background

In two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) the symmetry algebra is the Virasoro algebra: the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of local conformal transformations, spanned by modes LnL_n for n∈Zn\in\mathbb{Z} with a central term fixed by the central charge cc. The Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov (BPZ) minimal models are the family of rational CFTs with only finitely many primary fields (the fields from which all other local fields descend by acting with the Virasoro modes), existing for c=1−6/(p(p+1))c=1-6/(p(p+1)) with integer p≥2p\geq2; they are the prototypical exactly solved CFTs. The Coulomb gas (free-field) formalism computes minimal-model observables not from the Virasoro algebra directly but from a free boson with a background charge: primary fields become vertex operators (exponentials of the Gaussian field), and correlators are corrected by integrating over the positions of screening charges - vertex operators of two special charges whose contour integrals commute with the Virasoro action. Matrix elements of the resulting screened vertex operators between free-field Fock modules (the standard representation spaces of the Heisenberg algebra, the oscillator algebra of the free boson's modes) reduce to hypergeometric multi-integrals

Iℓ,m,n(α,β,γ)=∫□xℓ,m,n∏i=1Nxiαi(1−xi)βi∏1≤j<k≤N(xk−xj+i0)2γj,k dx1⋯dxN,I_{\ell,m,n}(\bm{\alpha},\bm{\beta},\bm{\gamma})=\int_{\square_x^{\ell,m,n}}\prod_{i=1}^{N}x_i^{\alpha_i}(1-x_i)^{\beta_i}\prod_{1\leq j<k\leq N}(x_k-x_j+i0)^{2\gamma_{j,k}}\,\mathrm{d}x_1\cdots\mathrm{d}x_N,

called Dotsenko-Fateev integrals, over the chain □xℓ,m,n=[−∞,0]ℓ×[0,1]m×[1,∞]n\square_x^{\ell,m,n}=[-\infty,0]^{\ell}\times[0,1]^{m}\times[1,\infty]^{n} with N=ℓ+m+nN=\ell+m+n. Here α,β∈CN\bm{\alpha},\bm{\beta}\in\mathbb{C}^{N} and γ∈CN(N−1)/2\bm{\gamma}\in\mathbb{C}^{N(N-1)/2} are charge-dependent exponents and the +i0+i0 fixes the branch of the multivalued powers. The integral is absolutely convergent only in a chamber of parameter space that excludes the values needed in the CFT applications (for instance γj,k=−1\gamma_{j,k}=-1, which occurs when both screening types are present); the formalism therefore requires a meromorphic continuation in the parameters whose singular locus contains no hyperplane of the form {γj,k=c}\{\gamma_{j,k}=c\}.

For N=1N=1 this is classical: the integral is the Euler beta integral, and its continuation is Pochhammer's regularization - replacing the interval of integration by the commutator contour b−1a−1bab^{-1}a^{-1}ba of loops around 00 and 11, lifted to the cover of C\{0,1}\mathbb{C}\backslash\{0,1\} on which zα(1−z)βz^{\alpha}(1-z)^{\beta} is single-valued. The integral over the lifted contour is entire in (α,β)(\alpha,\beta), and all meromorphic singularities sit in the explicit prefactor: ∫Γzα(1−z)β dz=−4sin⁡(πα)sin⁡(πβ) B(α+1,β+1)\int_{\Gamma}z^{\alpha}(1-z)^{\beta}\,\mathrm{d}z=-4\sin(\pi\alpha)\sin(\pi\beta)\,B(\alpha+1,\beta+1). For general NN the analogous statement requires an NN-cycle in the monodromy cover of the configuration space MN(r,R)\mathcal{M}_N(r,R) of NN pairwise distinct points in the punctured annulus {z:r<∣z∣<R, z≠1}\{z:r<|z|<R,\ z\neq1\} (the monodromy cover is the quotient of the universal cover by the commutator subgroup of the fundamental group). Felder and Silvotti needed exactly such cycles in their construction of minimal-model conformal blocks on Riemann surfaces and, lacking a proof, stated their existence as a conjecture.

Sussman proved this conjecture. For each (ℓ,m,n)(\ell,m,n) he constructs a compact orientable topological NN-manifold without boundary 2(Aℓ,m,n)\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n}) and a continuous map

ιℓ,m,n[r,R]:2(Aℓ,m,n)⟶M^N(r,R)\iota_{\ell,m,n}[r,R]:\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n})\longrightarrow\widehat{\mathcal{M}}_N(r,R)

into the monodromy cover such that the pushforward of the fundamental class is a cycle whose pairing with the integrand ω(α,β,γ)\omega(\bm{\alpha},\bm{\beta},\bm{\gamma}) reproduces Iℓ,m,nI_{\ell,m,n} up to explicit products of 2isin⁡(π ⋅)2i\sin(\pi\,\cdot) factors, which yields the required meromorphic continuation. Here Aℓ,m,nA_{\ell,m,n} is an explicit NN-dimensional manifold-with-corners (a space locally modeled on octants [0,∞)k×RN−k[0,\infty)^{k}\times\mathbb{R}^{N-k}) obtained from the NN-cube by iterated blowup of its boundary faces (blowing up replaces a boundary face by its inward spherical normal bundle, the standard resolution tool of geometric analysis), and 2(Aℓ,m,n)\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n}) is its double: the compact space obtained by gluing 2∣F∣2^{|\mathcal{F}|} copies of Aℓ,m,nA_{\ell,m,n}, one for each subset of its set of facets (boundary hypersurfaces), along matching facets - the double of an interval with two endpoint facets is a circle, and the double of the NN-cube is the NN-torus. In low dimensions the Aℓ,m,nA_{\ell,m,n} are planar polygons: the double of the pentagon A1,1,0A_{1,1,0} is a 5-holed torus and the double of the hexagon A0,2,0A_{0,2,0} is a 17-holed torus; for a convex kk-gon the genus is g=k2k−3−2k−1+1g=k2^{k-3}-2^{k-1}+1, which grows exponentially in kk. The map ιℓ,m,n[r,R]\iota_{\ell,m,n}[r,R] is obtained from explicit smooth approximating maps depending on auxiliary cutoff parameters (ϵ,δ,ε,ϝ)(\epsilon,\delta,\varepsilon,\digamma), and is smooth with respect to an explicit smooth structure on 2(Aℓ,m,n)\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n}).

The rigorous free-field theory is well developed in neighboring cases: Tsuchiya and Kanie constructed the single-screening (N=1N=1) intertwining operators (operators intertwining the symmetry algebra's action on two representation spaces) between Heisenberg Fock modules; Boenkost and Constantinescu, and Bovier, treated unscreened vertex operators and bosonic conformal blocks analytically in Hilbert space; Felder realized the minimal-model modules as the BRST cohomology (a cohomological device, imported from gauge theory, for imposing constraints) of a screening complex; Tsuchiya and Wood constructed the extended W\mathcal{W}-algebra (a Virasoro algebra enlarged by finitely many higher-spin currents) of type sl2sl_2 at positive rational level from screening operators in the vertex-operator-algebra framework (a vertex operator algebra, or chiral algebra, is the algebraic axiomatization of the holomorphic half of a CFT, generated by fields with meromorphic operator products). What exists nowhere is a construction of the multi-screening screened vertex operators themselves as operators - bounded linear maps between the appropriate Hilbert-space completions of Fock modules - together with the assembly of the BPZ minimal-model chiral algebras from them; this is precisely the step for which Sussman's regularization is designed. His paper claims the method applies "verbatim" to the formal screened vertex-operator integrals and thereby "yields a definition of the screened vertex operators as honest bounded linear maps between appropriate Hilbert spaces", but performs none of the required analysis. The paper likewise leaves open, and explicitly so, the immersion question for the cycle maps and the topology of the doubles for N≥3N\geq3. These three issues form the problem stated below.

Problem Statement

Let N=ℓ+m+nN=\ell+m+n and let Iℓ,m,n(α,β,γ)I_{\ell,m,n}(\bm{\alpha},\bm{\beta},\bm{\gamma}) be the Dotsenko-Fateev integral over □xℓ,m,n=[−∞,0]ℓ×[0,1]m×[1,∞]n\square_x^{\ell,m,n}=[-\infty,0]^{\ell}\times[0,1]^{m}\times[1,\infty]^{n} of the multivalued integrand ω(α,β,γ)=∏ixiαi(1−xi)βi∏j<k(xk−xj)2γj,k dx1⋯dxN\omega(\bm{\alpha},\bm{\beta},\bm{\gamma})=\prod_i x_i^{\alpha_i}(1-x_i)^{\beta_i}\prod_{j<k}(x_k-x_j)^{2\gamma_{j,k}}\,\mathrm{d}x_1\cdots\mathrm{d}x_N. Let Aℓ,m,nA_{\ell,m,n} be the NN-dimensional manifold-with-corners obtained from the NN-cube by iterated blowup of boundary faces, 2(Aℓ,m,n)\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n}) its double with the explicit smooth structure constructed in the source paper (Sussman 2023), and

ιℓ,m,n[r,R]:2(Aℓ,m,n)⟶M^N(r,R)\iota_{\ell,m,n}[r,R]:\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n})\longrightarrow\widehat{\mathcal{M}}_N(r,R)

the map constructed in that paper, whose pushforward cycle Γℓ,m,n=(ιℓ,m,n[r,R])∗[2(Aℓ,m,n)]\Gamma_{\ell,m,n}=(\iota_{\ell,m,n}[r,R])_{*}[\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n})] pairs with ω\omega to reproduce Iℓ,m,nI_{\ell,m,n} up to explicit trigonometric prefactors. The problem is to complete the geometric and analytic program that this regularization theorem initiates, along three linked directions:

(1) Immersion and injectivity of the cycle maps. Prove or disprove that ιℓ,m,n[r,R]\iota_{\ell,m,n}[r,R] is an immersion - its differential injective at every point of 2(Aℓ,m,n)\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n}) - for generic values of the auxiliary parameters (ϵ,δ,ε,ϝ)(\epsilon,\delta,\varepsilon,\digamma) and annulus parameters (r,R)(r,R) appearing in the construction; determine the locus of parameter values on which the differential degenerates, and determine where the map fails to be injective (self-intersections of the image). This settles whether the cycles Γℓ,m,n\Gamma_{\ell,m,n} are fundamental classes of immersed C∞C^{\infty}-submanifolds of M^N(r,R)\widehat{\mathcal{M}}_N(r,R), as the source paper anticipates but does not prove.

(2) Screened vertex operators and the BPZ minimal-model chiral algebras. Carry out the claimed 'verbatim' extension of the regularization to the formal screened vertex-operator integrals of the Coulomb gas formalism: construct the screened vertex operators as bounded linear operators between the appropriate Hilbert-space completions of the free-field Fock modules, establish their domains, operator-norm bounds, and meromorphic dependence on the charge parameters (in the spirit of the unscreened treatments of Boenkost-Constantinescu and Bovier), verify their intertwining (Virasoro-commutation) properties, and assemble from them the chiral algebras and conformal blocks of the BPZ minimal models, establishing that the resulting vertex operator algebra agrees with the minimal-model chiral algebra.

(3) Topology of the doubles. Describe the global topology of 2(Aℓ,m,n)\mathsf{2}(A_{\ell,m,n}) for N≥3N\geq3 by invariants more succinct than the construction itself - for instance cell counts, homology groups, the generators of the fundamental group of the double and the associated monodromy phases eiθFe^{i\theta_{\mathcal{F}}} (the phases by which the integrand's branches transform when transported around those generators, out of which the trigonometric prefactor of the regularization identity is assembled) - beyond the convex kk-gon genus formula g=k2k−3−2k−1+1g=k2^{k-3}-2^{k-1}+1, and explain how this topology constrains the monodromy entering the regularization identity.

Items (1) and (2) are the precise core of the problem: (1) establishes the geometric regularity of the regularization cycles whose existence the source paper proved, and (2) is the analytic payoff for which those cycles were constructed - the rigorous Coulomb-gas construction of the BPZ minimal models. Item (3) is the structural-understanding part, feeding the monodromy analysis underlying both (1) and (2); it is the least sharply delimited of the three, and the source author doubts that a much more succinct description than the construction exists, so a partial but honest advance (for example explicit homology and monodromy computations for families with N≥3N\geq3) counts as progress on it. Full resolution of the problem requires both of the core items (1) and (2); item (3) is not required for full resolution.
