The spin-1/2 XYZ chain is an integrable lattice model whose gapped phases scale to the sine-Gordon field theory. Ercolessi, Evangelisti, Franchini and Ravanini (Phys. Rev. B 85, 115428 (2012)) computed the exact bipartite Rényi entropy of its semi-infinite half-line from the corner transfer matrix (CTM) and found that, expanded in the correlation length , it formally coincides with the entropy of a bulk Ising model, the CTM partition function decomposing into Ising conformal-field-theory characters in the mass parameter. Retaining the lattice spacing generates further subleading terms whose form depends on the path in coupling space along which the critical line is approached — including a correction of the form , with the scaling dimension of a sine-Gordon vertex operator, whose exponent varies continuously along the critical line, and terms conjectured to signal a marginally relevant operator — none of which admits a field-theoretical derivation. The open problem is to give a consistent field-theoretical (massive sine-Gordon) and algebraic interpretation of these corrections and of the unexplained character organization of the CTM spectrum: derive the lattice-generated terms and identify the responsible operators, explain the character structure (Virasoro or extended algebra versus modular structure in parameter space versus analytic accident), classify which approach paths generate which terms and when coefficients vanish, compare the correlation-length and mass-gap expansions, and test the structure on the one-interval geometry and on excited states. No resolution is known in the literature: the authors' 2013 modular-invariance sequel and De Luca–Franchini's RSOS analysis provide competing hints but explicitly leave the fundamental explanation open.
Background
The entanglement of a one-dimensional quantum system in its ground state is commonly measured by the Rényi entropies , where is the reduced density matrix of a subsystem and the von Neumann entropy is the limit. At a continuous quantum critical point the low-energy physics is a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), a scale-invariant theory characterized by a central charge ; CFT fixes the entropy of a subsystem of length to be a leading logarithm, for an interval in an infinite chain (half of that for a block at the end of a semi-infinite chain), plus subleading corrections. Cardy and Calabrese showed that relevant operators localized at the conical singularities of the -sheeted replica Riemann surface generate so-called unusual corrections, of the form for an operator of scaling dimension , which dominate the naively expected irrelevant-operator terms in ranges of and were not anticipated by finite-size scaling arguments.
Away from criticality the system is gapped and the entropy saturates, with corrections controlled by the correlation length (the inverse of the lightest mass). The spin-1/2 XYZ chain, , is integrable: its coupling space contains a critical line described by a free-boson CFT whose compactification radius is set by a parameter , and massive phases whose scaling limit is the sine-Gordon field theory; in the attractive regime its spectrum contains, besides kinks (the topological soliton excitations that interpolate between degenerate vacua), stable bound states called breathers. Because the chain is exactly solvable via the two-dimensional classical eight-vertex model, the Rényi entropy of a semi-infinite half-chain is available in closed form: is the exponential of the corner transfer matrix (CTM), the transfer matrix of a 90-degree wedge of the classical model, whose single-particle spectrum is exactly known — a construction reviewed by Peschel and exploited in the earlier exact works of Ercolessi, Evangelisti and Ravanini on the XYZ entropy.
The 2012 analysis of Ercolessi, Evangelisti, Franchini and Ravanini produced two unexpected structures. First, in the scaling limit the entropy as a function of formally coincides with that of a bulk Ising model (): the CTM partition function decomposes into Ising CFT characters (the -series encoding each sector of the critical spectrum) in the mass parameter — a modular-dual of the elliptic parameter of the exact solution — so the first subleading correction is the Ising energy operator rather than a descendant of the identity, and all subleading exponents are doubled relative to the mass-parameter expansion because , with the lattice spacing. The logarithmic coefficient equals that of the critical description in the subsystem size, so the two readings are numerically compatible. Second, if the lattice spacing is kept finite, the exact inversion between mass parameter and generates further subleading terms whose form depends on the path in coupling space along which the critical line is approached — the renormalization-group flow (fixed ), straight lines, or zero-slope curves in the elliptic parameter plane — with terms , , , and , where is the scaling dimension of a relevant operator of the critical bulk theory; the coefficients depend on the path and on and can vanish on whole parameter regions (for instance along the RG-flow slope). In the attractive regime a term appears whose exponent varies continuously along the critical line; the source identifies it with the form, where is the scaling dimension of the sine-Gordon vertex operator — an operator that does not enter the scaling-limit entropy at all; the authors attribute its appearance to the breather bound states. The terms, arising on zero-slope paths, were conjectured to signal a marginally relevant operator that changes the compactification radius.
None of these lattice-generated corrections has a derivation from the continuum theory. The natural program — extend the ultraviolet-regularization and counterterm analysis that Cardy and Calabrese developed for critical systems to the massive sine-Gordon model, with the lattice spacing as the cutoff — was proposed by the authors but not carried out. Relatedly, the organization of CTM spectra and partition functions of integrable models in gapped phases into Virasoro characters, with the scale set by the mass parameter, is a long-standing observation without a fundamental explanation; the 2012 paper states that any connection with an underlying Virasoro algebra 'remains to be discovered'. The question has practical stakes: unusual corrections contaminate the finite-size and finite-correlation-length extrapolations by which numerical methods such as the density-matrix renormalization group extract universal entanglement data, as later numerical work confirmed already at criticality.
Problem Statement
Provide a consistent field-theoretical and algebraic interpretation of the subleading corrections to the bipartite Rényi entropy of the massive (gapped) XYZ spin-1/2 chain as a function of the correlation length , as computed exactly from the corner transfer matrix by Ercolessi, Evangelisti, Franchini and Ravanini (2012), and thereby of the analogous structures in gapped integrable lattice models generally. Concretely, the requested interpretation should accomplish the following linked objectives.
(1) Derive the lattice-generated subleading terms within a massive sine-Gordon (or equivalent continuum) framework with an explicit ultraviolet cutoff — the lattice spacing — and counterterm analysis, extending to the massive case the critical treatment of Cardy and Calabrese: in particular the correction — of the form , with the scaling dimension of a sine-Gordon vertex operator — whose exponent varies continuously along the critical line, attributed to the breather bound states, and the terms conjectured to arise from a marginally relevant operator on zero-slope approach paths; identify the operators responsible and establish whether these terms are genuine continuum effects or strict lattice artifacts.
(2) Explain why CTM spectra and partition functions of integrable models in gapped phases decompose into Virasoro characters — Ising characters in the mass parameter for the XYZ/eight-vertex case: determine whether this reflects an underlying Virasoro or extended algebraic structure of the CTM that can be made explicit, modular properties in parameter space, or merely shared elliptic-function analyticity, and make the mechanism explicit.
(3) Systematize the path dependence: classify which approach paths in coupling space (the renormalization-group flow at fixed , straight lines of given slope, zero-slope curves in the elliptic plane — the plane of the elliptic parameter of the exact solution and the critical-line parameter ) generate which of the correction forms , , , and , and give criteria predicting when the coefficient of each term vanishes.
(4) Carry out the corresponding analysis with the mass gap (the lowest excitation energy) replacing the correlation length as the infrared scale, and compare the resulting subleading series with the correlation-length expansion.
(5) Test the robustness of the Ising operator content: compute the Rényi entropy of a finite interval (two boundary points) as a function of and determine whether the correction exponents double, as counting of the twist fields (the fields localized at the ends of the interval in the replica construction) in the critical Ising model would suggest, and extend the correlation-length analysis to excited states.
Objectives (1) and (2) are the twin cores of the problem — the field-theoretical origin of the corrections and the algebraic origin of the character structure that organizes them — and together with the path classification (3) they constitute a complete resolution, which must account for the corrections in their path-dependent generality rather than for a single special path or a single term; objectives (4) and (5) are consistency checks of the same interpretation program, raised as future directions by the source, and are optional extensions rather than part of the required resolution.
