For rational (Yangian) gl_N-symmetric spin chains, the overlap of any integrable matrix product state (MPS) with a Bethe eigenstate is governed by a universal formula: an MPS-independent ratio of Gaudin determinants times MPS-dependent one-particle factors, which are eigenvalues of commuting operators constructed from the K-matrix of the MPS. This formula relies on the ±u pair structure of the Bethe roots and therefore fails for twisted boundary conditions, where a twist matrix G inserted in the trace of the monodromy matrix destroys the pairing and the integrability of the boundary state is encoded only in the full Q-system of Baxter Q-functions. Gombor (JHEP 10 (2025) 035), who proved the untwisted formula representation-independently, posed the search for a similarly universal overlap formula under twisted boundary conditions as an open research direction; existing twisted results are limited to SU(2) two-site states, per-MPS dressing formulas, and separation-of-variables determinants for specific chains and boundary states. The problem is to find a closed-form universal overlap formula for all integrable MPS of rational spin chains with twisted transfer matrices, together with a representation-independent derivation.
Background
Integrable spin chains are one-dimensional quantum systems with infinitely many conserved charges that can be solved exactly by the algebraic Bethe ansatz: eigenstates are parameterized by sets of rapidities ("Bethe roots") satisfying algebraic Bethe equations, and their norms and scalar products are given by determinants — the Gaudin determinant (a matrix built from the derivatives of the Bethe equations) for on-shell norms, with Slavnov's formula for general scalar products. The transfer matrix t(u) is the trace over an auxiliary space of a product of R-matrices (for rational chains, R(u) = 1 + P/u with P the permutation operator, generating the Yangian symmetry); a twist (twisted boundary condition) means the trace is taken with an invertible matrix G, so the chain closes with a nontrivial monodromy. The twisted model remains integrable, but its transfer-matrix eigenvalues are no longer even functions of u.
A parallel development concerns "integrable boundary states": states annihilated by all odd conserved charges, which are exactly the states having nonzero overlap with a parity-symmetric subsector of Bethe eigenstates. Their overlaps are the essential input to the Quench Action treatment of quantum quenches from integrable initial states, and, in the AdS/CFT correspondence, they compute one-point functions of local operators in defect backgrounds (domain walls, 't Hooft loops, Gukov-Witten surface defects, monodromy/vortex loops, Coulomb-branch configurations). Integrable boundary states come in two families: simple two-site tensor product states and matrix product states (MPS), in which a block of matrices is contracted through an auxiliary "bond" space. Pozsgay, Piroli and Vernier showed that integrable MPS correspond to solutions K(u) of a (crossed) reflection equation — K-matrices forming representations of the twisted Yangian — and Gombor and Pozsgay introduced the KT-relation, a linear functional relation satisfied by the K-matrix that allows overlaps to be computed with purely algebraic Bethe ansatz tools, independent of the Hilbert-space representation. Historically, overlap formulas were first found for specific states (the Néel state of the XXZ chain, whose overlap involves a Gaudin-like determinant, as shown by Brockmann, De Nardis, Wouters and Caux), and were later made representation-independent and nested.
For untwisted rational gl_N-symmetric chains this culminated in a universal formula, proved rigorously by Gombor: for any integrable MPS, the normalized overlap with a Bethe state factorizes as (i) a ratio of Gaudin determinants depending only on the Bethe roots and the Bethe equations, times (ii) an MPS-dependent product of one-particle factors evaluated at every Bethe root of every nesting level, which are eigenvalues of commuting F-operators built from quasi-determinants of the K-matrix, together with normalization factors given by a B-operator. The proof leans on the pair structure: integrability of the boundary state selects eigenstates whose roots come in pairs at each nesting level, and the two Gaudin determinants are formed on the two halves of the paired roots.
Under a nontrivial twist this structure collapses. The Bethe roots are generically unpaired, the Gaudin-determinant ratio loses its meaning, and the selection rules imposed by a twist-compatible boundary state are only compactly expressible through the full Q-system — the collection of nested Baxter Q-functions tied together by QQ-relations. Partial precedents exist: for diagonal twists of the spin-1/2 (and higher-spin) XXX chain, Gombor and Pozsgay generalized the integrability condition and derived exact two-site-state overlaps, where the determinant part becomes a Vandermonde-type (equivalently, Q-function) determinant rather than a Gaudin determinant; Ekhammar, Gromov and Ryan, using functional separation of variables (SoV, a framework in which wavefunctions are labeled by eigenvalues of separated commuting charges and overlaps become Q-function determinants), obtained determinant formulas for the overlaps of a symmetry-singlet boundary state and its charge-generated companions with any factorizable state in a twisted alternating su(3) chain; and the generalized "dressing" strategy of De Leeuw, Gombor, Kristjansen, Linardopoulos and Pozsgay, extended by Gombor, Kristjansen, Moustakis and Qian, reduces an MPS overlap to a linear combination of transfer-matrix eigenvalues times the two-site overlap and works for arbitrary twists after a GL(N) rotation — but it must be carried out separately for each MPS, and its required inputs (twisted two-site overlaps, twisted norms) are themselves known only case by case. Notably, in certain 't Hooft-loop settings (which correspond to twisted chains) the overlap provably fails to factorize over Bethe roots at all, hinting that a universal twisted formula, if it exists, may need a structure genuinely different from the untwisted product form. What remains missing is precisely the twisted analogue of the universal formula: one closed expression, valid simultaneously for all integrable MPS, with an operator-level, representation-independent derivation.
Problem Statement
Find a universal, closed-form formula for the normalized overlaps between integrable matrix product states and Bethe eigenstates of rational (Yangian R-matrix) gl_N-symmetric spin chains whose transfer matrix carries a nontrivial twist matrix G — diagonal or, more generally, non-diagonal, subject to the known compatibility constraints between the twist and the boundary state's K-matrix — valid simultaneously for all integrable MPS compatible with the twist rather than derived state by state, and supply a rigorous, representation-independent derivation. The formula must express the overlap through Bethe-root or, where the pair structure is absent, Q-system data of the twisted chain together with K-matrix/eigenvalue data of the MPS; it must reduce, in the untwisted limit G = identity, to the known universal expression (ratio of Gaudin determinants times one-particle F-operator factors), and it must reproduce the established twisted benchmarks: the SU(2)/XXX two-site overlaps of Gombor and Pozsgay and the dressing-formula results for twisted and inhomogeneous chains.
