The reflection KK-matrix — the solution of the boundary Yang–Baxter (reflection) equation — encodes the integrable open boundary conditions of a vertex model and is the object that determines which open supersymmetric spin chains are exactly solvable. Vieira and Lima-Santos classified the reflection KK-matrices of the vertex model based on the twisted quantum affine Lie superalgebra Uq[osp(2)(2∣2m)]=Uq[C(2)(m+1)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2|2m)] = U_q[C^{(2)}(m+1)], finding complete, block-diagonal, X-shape and diagonal solution families, but only for the single choice κ1=κ2=ν=+1\kappa_1=\kappa_2=\nu=+1 of the three discrete parameters of the underlying multiparametric Galleas–Martins SS-matrix; and their non-diagonal constructions stop at n=0n=0: for the general Uq[osp(2)(2n+2∣2m)]=Uq[D(2)(n+1∣m)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2n+2|2m)] = U_q[D^{(2)}(n+1|m)] hierarchy with n≠0n\neq0 only diagonal KK-matrices are known. The construction and classification of the reflection KK-matrices for the multiparametric Uq[osp(2)(2∣2m)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2|2m)] models (all admissible sign choices of κ1,κ2,ν\kappa_1,\kappa_2,\nu) and the determination of the non-diagonal KK-matrices for the n≠0n\neq0 members — including their branch structure and boundary free-parameter counts — remain open, closing the last gap in the graded reflection-matrix classification program for twisted orthosymplectic vertex models.

Background

A two-dimensional vertex model is integrable when its local statistical weights define an RR-matrix acting on End(V⊗V)\mathrm{End}(V\otimes V), with VV an NN-dimensional complex vector space, that satisfies the Yang–Baxter equation R12(x)R13(xy)R23(y)=R23(y)R13(xy)R12(x)R_{12}(x)R_{13}(xy)R_{23}(y)=R_{23}(y)R_{13}(xy)R_{12}(x), where x,yx,y are multiplicative spectral parameters and R12=R⊗IR_{12}=R\otimes I, R23=I⊗RR_{23}=I\otimes R, R13=P12R23P12R_{13}=P_{12}R_{23}P_{12} with PP the permutation matrix. Jimbo classified the trigonometric RR-matrices associated with all non-exceptional affine Lie algebras, including the twisted (obtained by a Dynkin-diagram automorphism) algebra Dn+1(2)D_{n+1}^{(2)}.

For open (non-periodic) boundary conditions, integrability at the boundary is guaranteed by the boundary Yang–Baxter equation, also called the reflection equation, introduced by Sklyanin building on Cherednik's work. It reads R12(x/y)K1(x)R21(xy)K2(y)=K2(y)R12(xy)K1(x)R21(x/y)R_{12}(x/y)K_1(x)R_{21}(xy)K_2(y)=K_2(y)R_{12}(xy)K_1(x)R_{21}(x/y), where R21=PR12PR_{21}=PR_{12}P, K1=K⊗IK_1=K\otimes I, K2=I⊗KK_2=I\otimes K, and the reflection KK-matrix is an N×NN\times N matrix of functions of one spectral parameter satisfying the regularity condition K(1)=IK(1)=I. Given an RR-matrix, finding and classifying all KK-matrices is the central problem of boundary integrability: the KK-matrices determine the boundary terms of integrable open spin chains (through Sklyanin's double-row transfer matrix) and the allowed boundary conditions of integrable quantum field theories.

In supersymmetric (graded) models, VV carries a Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-grading V=Veven⊕VoddV=V_{\mathrm{even}}\oplus V_{\mathrm{odd}} and all matrix operations are graded: the tensor product acquires signs via the Grassmann parity πa\pi_a of each basis vector, and the permutator becomes the graded permutation Pg=∑a,b(−1)πaπbEabbaP_g=\sum_{a,b}(-1)^{\pi_a\pi_b}E_{ab}^{ba}. Equivalently one works with the scattering SS-matrix S(x)=PgR(x)S(x)=P_gR(x), in terms of which both the Yang–Baxter and reflection equations keep the same form with ungraded operations. Galleas and Martins derived, from baxterizations of representations of the dilute braid-monoid algebra — baxterization being the procedure that converts the generators of such an algebra into spectral-parameter-dependent matrix solutions — a family of multiparametric trigonometric SS-matrices associated with the twisted quantum affine Lie superalgebra Uq[osp(2)(2n+2∣2m)]=Uq[D(2)(n+1∣m)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2n+2|2m)] = U_q[D^{(2)}(n+1|m)] (the twisted orthosymplectic superalgebra, whose even part is o(2)(2n+2)⊗sp(1)(2m)o^{(2)}(2n+2)\otimes\mathrm{sp}^{(1)}(2m), i.e. Dn+1(2)⊗Cm(1)D_{n+1}^{(2)}\otimes C_m^{(1)}). This SS-matrix acts on a space of dimension N=2(m+n)+2N=2(m+n)+2, depends on the deformation parameter qq, on ζ=q n−m\zeta=q^{\,n-m}, and on three discrete parameters κ1,κ2,ν∈{+1,−1}\kappa_1,\kappa_2,\nu\in\{+1,-1\} that select distinct supersymmetric vertex models: only for κ1=κ2=ν=+1\kappa_1=\kappa_2=\nu=+1 does it reduce to Jimbo's Dn+1(2)D_{n+1}^{(2)} SS-matrix when the 2m2m fermionic degrees of freedom are removed (m=0m=0). The case n=0n=0 gives the Uq[osp(2)(2∣2m)]=Uq[C(2)(m+1)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2|2m)] = U_q[C^{(2)}(m+1)] models.

Vieira and Lima-Santos solved and classified the reflection KK-matrices for the n=0n=0, κ1=κ2=ν=+1\kappa_1=\kappa_2=\nu=+1 member using the derivative method: taking a formal derivative of the reflection equation converts the N4N^4 non-linear functional equations in two variables into a linear overdetermined system in one variable, at the cost of introducing N2N^2 boundary parameters βab=dKab(y)/dy∣y=1\beta_{ab}=\left.dK_{ab}(y)/dy\right|_{y=1}, of which only a subset must be fixed; the unfixed ones are the boundary free-parameters of each solution. They found four families: complete solutions (no null elements; mm boundary free-parameters), block-diagonal solutions (one free-parameter), X-shape solutions (nonzero entries only on the main and secondary diagonals; mm free-parameters), and diagonal solutions (two families: one parameter-free valid for all m,nm,n, and one with two free-parameters valid for m=nm=n). The diagonal families are the only solutions known for the general Uq[osp(2)(2n+2∣2m)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2n+2|2m)] models with n≠0n\neq0: the authors state explicitly that the problem of finding the non-diagonal KK-matrices for these models had eluded them, and list both it and the KK-matrices of the multiparametric models (arbitrary admissible κ1,κ2,ν\kappa_1,\kappa_2,\nu) as open directions. For context on the surrounding program: Lima-Santos and collaborators had previously classified the reflection matrices of the untwisted Uq[osp(r∣2m)(1)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}(r|2m)^{(1)}] and twisted Uq[sl(r∣2m)(2)]U_q[\mathrm{sl}(r|2m)^{(2)}] vertex models (where non-diagonal solutions do exist), and multiparametric KK-matrices have been obtained for the purely bosonic Uq[Dn+1(2)]\mathcal{U}_q[D_{n+1}^{(2)}] model.

Problem Statement

Complete the classification of reflection KK-matrices — solutions K(x)K(x) with K(1)=IK(1)=I of the graded boundary Yang–Baxter (reflection) equation with the Galleas–Martins multiparametric SS-matrix — for the twisted orthosymplectic vertex-model hierarchy Uq[osp(2)(2n+2∣2m)]=Uq[D(2)(n+1∣m)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2n+2|2m)] = U_q[D^{(2)}(n+1|m)]. The single overarching objective is an exhaustive, family-by-family determination of the integrable open boundary conditions of this hierarchy, in the same sense in which Vieira and Lima-Santos classified the n=0n=0, κ1=κ2=ν=+1\kappa_1=\kappa_2=\nu=+1 member into complete, block-diagonal, X-shape and diagonal families. Concretely, the problem consists of two linked parts: (a) for the Uq[osp(2)(2∣2m)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2|2m)] vertex models with m≥1m\geq1 and each admissible choice (κ1,κ2,ν)∈{+1,−1}3(\kappa_1,\kappa_2,\nu)\in\{+1,-1\}^3 other than (+1,+1,+1)(+1,+1,+1), construct and classify all reflection KK-matrices — determine every solution family, its branch structure under the algebraic constraints among boundary parameters βab=dKab(y)/dy∣y=1\beta_{ab}=\left.dK_{ab}(y)/dy\right|_{y=1}, and its number of independent boundary free-parameters; (b) for the general Uq[osp(2)(2n+2∣2m)]U_q[\mathrm{osp}^{(2)}(2n+2|2m)] vertex models with n≥1n\geq1 and m≥1m\geq1 — i.e. the Galleas–Martins SS-matrix with κ1=κ2=ν=+1\kappa_1=\kappa_2=\nu=+1 at general rank, for which only the two diagonal families are known — determine whether non-diagonal reflection KK-matrices exist — that is, solutions not equivalent, in the family-equivalence convention fixed by the completion criteria below, to a diagonal solution, and if so construct and classify them with the same family/branch/parameter-count data. A complete answer states, for each model covered by parts (a) and (b), all inequivalent KK-matrix families — where two solutions are counted as the same family when they are related by a relabeling of their boundary free-parameters or by a constant similarity K↦UKU−1K\mapsto UKU^{-1} with U⊗UU\otimes U commuting with the SS-matrix — with their explicit functional form, the boundary-parameter constraints and branches, the count of boundary free-parameters, and a completeness argument (or, for the non-diagonal sector of part (b), a rigorous non-existence proof if no such solutions exist).
