The (i.e. ) quantum spin chain — the rational, member of the family, built from the -invariant vector -matrix of Li et al. (2019) — with periodic and with generic non-diagonal integrable open boundaries was solved exactly in 2019 by the nested off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA) combined with R-matrix fusion, and its authors announced that the method generalizes to arbitrary . This problem asks for that generalization: closing the fusion hierarchy of the vector representation at arbitrary rank (antisymmetric-tensor tower plus spinor sectors), deriving the complete closed system of operator product identities with asymptotic and special-point constraints, and constructing the nested inhomogeneous - relations and Bethe ansatz equations with correct root counting and boundary-dependent inhomogeneous terms, thereby determining the exact finite-size spectrum of the chain for arbitrary with generic -breaking boundary reflections. Periodic and -preserving open cases are known for all ranks; rank 3 is solved in this rational form (and separately in its -deformed, trigonometric variant), and the rank-2 chain is solved via its factorization into two XXZ chains; the general non-diagonal case has not been worked out as of 2026.
Background
A quantum integrable spin chain is a one-dimensional lattice model whose conserved quantities are generated by a transfer matrix , a product of -matrices taken over all lattice sites, with a spectral parameter. The -matrix acts on the tensor product of two auxiliary spaces and satisfies the Yang-Baxter equation, the consistency condition that makes the transfer matrices at different commute; the Hamiltonian is recovered as a logarithmic derivative of . The chains are labeled by their symmetry algebra: is the Lie algebra , and the integrable model family associated with its affine extension has a fundamental (vector) -matrix acting on . The rank-3 solution below uses the rational (Yangian-type, ) vector -matrix in a normalization where is proportional to the permutation operator, the first fusion degeneration lies at , and the boundary reflection matrices are the rational limits of the trigonometric vertex-model matrices; the -deformed (trigonometric) members of the family are treated as separate models. The spectral problem is to find all eigenvalues of .
With periodic boundary conditions the chain was solved for every rank long ago by Reshetikhin's analytic Bethe ansatz. Open (half-infinite) chains are described by reflection -matrices satisfying the reflection equation: the transfer matrix is built with a at each end, and the boundary is integrable precisely when solves this equation. When is diagonal, or otherwise preserves a charge generated by a Cartan generator (one of the commuting diagonal generators of the algebra), a reference state (pseudo-vacuum) exists and the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz diagonalizes the chain; for open and chains with diagonal boundaries this is worked out via extended twisted Yangians (the boundary symmetry algebras that classify such reflections). The hard case is a generic non-diagonal (with its dual at the other end): the most general solutions of the reflection equation do not commute with the Cartan generators, the charge is broken, no pseudo-vacuum exists, and the algebraic Bethe ansatz fails. The general non-diagonal reflection matrices for the trigonometric vertex model are known for every (Lima-Santos and Malara), and their rational limits supply the boundary data used at rank 3, so the boundary data themselves are not the obstacle.
The off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA), introduced by Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang for the XXX chain with arbitrary boundary fields, bypasses the missing reference state. Instead of eigenstates one uses functional data: (i) operator product identities — exact relations among the transfer matrices fused at the degeneration points of the -matrix, obtained by inserting projectors into the Yang-Baxter equation; (ii) the asymptotic behavior of the fused transfer matrices at large ; and (iii) their exact values at special points of . When these data close, they determine the eigenvalues, which are parameterized by - relations — polynomial ansätze in several -functions — and the Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs) follow from requiring regularity (absence of spurious poles), together with root-counting rules that fix the number of roots of each -function (for with non-diagonal boundaries, ). For -breaking boundaries an inhomogeneous - relation is needed, in which an extra boundary-dependent term prevents spurious poles. The nested version of ODBA solved the chain with generic integrable boundaries, and the method was then applied to () and to the whole family (demonstrated at rank 3).
For , Li, Cao, Xue, Hao, Sun, Yang, Shi and Wang solved the rank-3 case — the or chain — with periodic and with generic non-diagonal open boundaries. The fusion has a special feature: fusing two vector -matrices at the degeneration point yields a 16-dimensional auxiliary space that factorizes into the two inequivalent 4-dimensional (anti)spinor representations, giving spinor-sector fused transfer matrices and ; the closed system of operator product identities linking with , supplemented by asymptotics and special values, suffices to fix the spectrum through an inhomogeneous - relation with three -functions and a boundary-dependent inhomogeneous parameter. In the paper's discussion the authors state that the method and the results could be generalized to the case directly. For general , however, the fusion tower of the vector representation runs through all antisymmetric tensor powers and terminates in the two spinor representations of dimension , with rank-dependent degeneracy patterns — for example the middle exterior power is reducible at every rank, splitting into two inequivalent half-dimensional representations (self-dual and anti-self-dual parts when is even, a mutually conjugate pair when is odd), and at vector and spinor sectors are permuted by triality (the outer automorphism of ) — so the closed system of functional relations and the - structure must be derived anew at each rank rather than extrapolated. Subsequent work solved the rank-2 chain — the trigonometric model, where the chain factorizes into two anisotropic XXZ chains — and the -deformed (trigonometric) vertex model, but no treatment of general has appeared.
Problem Statement
Carry out the nested off-diagonal Bethe ansatz plus fusion program for the () quantum spin chain at arbitrary rank , as announced by the authors of the rank-3 solution. The model family is that of the rank-3 solution of Li et al. (2019): the -symmetric chain with the rational () vector -matrix in the normalization of that paper (acting on , with proportional to the permutation operator and fusion degeneration points at integer shifts of beginning at ); the -deformed (trigonometric) rank-2 and rank-3 members of the wider family have been treated in separate papers and are not the target. For general and generic integrable non-diagonal open boundary reflections and (within the same unified treatment, also periodic boundary conditions), the required results are: (i) the fusion of the vectorial -matrix at its tensor-product degeneration points, giving the fused -matrices of the antisymmetric-tensor and spinor sectors and the associated fused reflection -matrices, with a demonstration that the fusion hierarchy closes at every rank; (ii) the complete closed set of operator product identities among the fused transfer matrices, together with their asymptotic behaviors at large spectral parameter and their exact values at the special points; and (iii) the nested inhomogeneous - parameterizations of the transfer-matrix eigenvalues and the explicit Bethe ansatz equations, including the correct root-counting constraints and the boundary-dependent inhomogeneous terms, thereby determining the exact finite-size spectrum of the chain for arbitrary with generic non-diagonal boundaries. The result must reproduce the known solution (Li et al. 2019) in the rank-3 limit and the known periodic and diagonal-boundary results in the corresponding limits. The periodic case and open chains with -preserving reflections are already solved for general by other methods, so the essential open content is the -breaking generic non-diagonal boundary case; the ranks (which factorizes into two XXZ chains) and (and its -deformation) are already solved, leaving arbitrary to be worked out.
