The two-loop dilatation operator of planar ABJM theory in the scalar sector is an integrable Hamiltonian on an alternating SU(4) spin chain, whose sites alternate between the fundamental and conjugate representations. Adding fundamental flavors produces open alternating chains whose boundary interactions break SU(4) to SU(2)×SU(2); within this class, solving the boundary Yang-Baxter equations forces the three boundary coefficients of each chain end to a single common value that can only be 0 or 1, so only two integrable boundary interactions exist per chain end: the non-trivial flavored boundary with anti-diagonal reflection matrices, and vanishing boundary interactions with reflection matrices proportional to the identity. The source paper leaves open the generalization: which other SU(4) symmetry-breaking patterns, boundary representations and boundary Hamiltonians admit integrable boundary interactions, and what happens for higher-rank alternating chains with bulk symmetry SU(N), N>4. The problem is to classify such integrable boundary interactions in natural generality, deciding whether the observed rigidity (only two solutions per boundary) persists or richer families of integrable reflection matrices emerge. Recent work has produced new K-matrix classes via gl(N) fusion but explicitly defers the classification, which remains open.

Background

The Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) model is a three-dimensional N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theory, the prototypical example of the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence between a planar limit of the gauge theory and type IIA string theory on AdS4×CP3AdS_4\times CP^3. In the planar limit, the two-loop anomalous-dimension matrix in the scalar sector coincides with the Hamiltonian of a spin chain of alternating type: the spin on an odd site sits in the fundamental representation 4\mathbf{4} of the SU(4)SU(4) R-symmetry group (the internal symmetry under which the four complex scalar fields of the theory transform) and the spin on an even site in the conjugate representation 4ˉ\bar{\mathbf{4}}, with the elementary fields (A1,A2,B1†,B2†)(A_1,A_2,B_1^\dagger,B_2^\dagger) of ABJM as the four states. This closed chain is integrable, as shown by Bethe-ansatz calculations (J. A. Minahan and K. Zarembo, JHEP 09 (2008) 040; D. Bak and Soo-Jong Rey, JHEP 10 (2008) 053), and its bulk two-body S-matrix was verified at two loops by C. Ahn and R. I. Nepomechie (JHEP 03 (2009) 144). Integrability of a chain with boundaries requires more than the bulk Yang-Baxter equation (the consistency condition of factorized two-body scattering): the reflection (K) matrices describing the scattering of a magnon (an elementary excitation of the spin chain) off each chain end must satisfy the boundary Yang-Baxter equations, also called reflection equations, which are the consistency conditions of factorized scattering in the presence of a boundary and guarantee that the coordinate Bethe ansatz (the construction of exact multi-excitation eigenstates from two-body scattering data) closes. Adding fundamental-matter ('flavored') fields to ABJM allows gauge-invariant operators built with flavor fields at the two ends instead of a trace; their anomalous dimensions define an open alternating chain whose boundary interaction terms break SU(4)SU(4) to the subgroup SU(2)×SU(2)SU(2)\times SU(2), with the boundary spins in the (2ˉ,1)(\bar{\mathbf{2}},\mathbf{1}) and (2,1)(\mathbf{2},\mathbf{1}) representations. For this chain, N. Bai, H.-H. Chen, S. He, J.-B. Wu, W.-L. Yang and M.-Q. Zhu (JHEP 08 (2017) 001) proved two-loop integrability via the coordinate Bethe ansatz, finding anti-diagonal reflection matrices. J.-B. Wu (Sci. China Phys. Mech. Astron. 61 (2018) 070011) then relaxed the three coefficients a,b,ca,b,c (left) and a′,b′,c′a',b',c' (right) of these boundary interaction terms to arbitrary constants and solved the boundary Yang-Baxter equations with the known bulk S-matrix using computer algebra: integrability forces a=b=c=cla=b=c=c_l with cl∈{0,1}c_l\in\{0,1\} (and likewise at the right end), so within this symmetry class only two integrable boundary interactions exist per chain end - the non-trivial flavored one with anti-diagonal reflection matrices, and the trivial one with vanishing boundary interactions and reflection matrices proportional to the identity (realized by a non-supersymmetric flavored ABJM theory). This rigidity within one symmetry-breaking pattern raises the natural question of what happens outside it.

Problem Statement

Classify the integrable boundary interactions of open SU(4)SU(4) alternating spin chains in natural generality, and extend the classification to higher rank. Concretely: (i) beyond the class of boundary interactions that break SU(4)SU(4) to SU(2)×SU(2)SU(2)\times SU(2) with boundary spins in the (2ˉ,1)(\bar{\mathbf{2}},\mathbf{1}) and (2,1)(\mathbf{2},\mathbf{1}) representations - where solving the boundary Yang-Baxter equations proves that only two integrable boundary interactions exist per chain end, namely the non-trivial flavored interaction with anti-diagonal reflection matrices and the trivial one with reflection matrices proportional to the identity - determine which other symmetry-breaking patterns of SU(4)SU(4), which choices of boundary-spin representations, and which forms of the boundary Hamiltonian admit integrable boundary interactions, in the sense of reflection matrices satisfying the boundary Yang-Baxter equations together with the bulk S-matrix of the alternating chain (equivalently, a consistent coordinate Bethe ansatz). (ii) Extend the classification to higher-rank alternating chains in which the bulk symmetry is SU(N)SU(N) with N>4N>4 and the sites carry more general representations. Overarching objective: to determine the integrable boundary interactions of open alternating chains beyond the known classes, resolving whether the rigidity observed in the SU(2)×SU(2)SU(2)\times SU(2)-preserving class persists under broader symmetry assumptions or richer families of integrable reflection matrices emerge.
