The finite-temperature thermodynamics of the spin-1/21/2 Heisenberg-Ising (XXZ) chain is computed, in the quantum transfer matrix (QTM) approach, from the eigenvalues of an auxiliary 22N2^{2N}-dimensional transfer matrix taken through the infinite-Trotter-number limit, the eigenvalues being characterised by solutions of auxiliary non-linear integral equations (NLIE). Göhmann, Goomanee, Kozlowski and Suzuki (2020) proved the conjectures underpinning this approach - commutativity of the thermodynamic and Trotter limits, existence of a real non-degenerate dominant eigenvalue, and well-posedness of the NLIE - only for temperatures large enough, and characterised only a subset of the subdominant spectrum. Faulmann, Göhmann and Kozlowski (2025) settled the opposite low-temperature limit in the massless antiferromagnetic regime 0≤Δ<10\le\Delta<1 for the part of the spectrum that does not collapse in the Trotter limit, conditionally on two conjectures. The open problem is to complete the program: prove NLIE existence, uniqueness and Trotter-limit convergence at arbitrary fixed temperature; classify all subdominant QTM eigenvalues, including the states outside the known root classes; justify the auxiliary parameter scalings and the Trotter-limit statistics of solution types; extend the rigorous treatment to the remaining anisotropy regimes; and settle Bethe-ansatz completeness for the quantum transfer matrix.

Background

The spin-1/21/2 Heisenberg-Ising (XXZ) chain is the one-dimensional Hamiltonian H=J∑n(σnxσn+1x+σnyσn+1y+Δ σnzσn+1z)−h2∑nσnzH=J\sum_n(\sigma^x_n\sigma^x_{n+1}+\sigma^y_n\sigma^y_{n+1}+\Delta\,\sigma^z_n\sigma^z_{n+1})-\frac{h}{2}\sum_n\sigma^z_n with anisotropy Δ=cos⁡ζ\Delta=\cos\zeta, ζ∈(0,π)\zeta\in(0,\pi) (the massless regime −1<Δ<1-1<\Delta<1; the massive easy-axis/easy-plane regimes have ∣Δ∣≥1|\Delta|\ge1) and magnetic field hh. The rigorous results and open conjectures discussed below are formulated, as in their sources, at fixed magnetic field hh; in particular, the low-temperature work of Faulmann-Göhmann-Kozlowski is carried out in the regime 0<h<4J(1+Δ)0<h<4J(1+\Delta) of the massless antiferromagnetic phase. The chain is the paradigmatic exactly solved quantum lattice model, and its finite-temperature equilibrium thermodynamics - the per-site free energy ff and the correlation lengths ξ\xi governing the exponential decay of thermal correlation functions - has been a benchmark problem since the early 1970s. The first exact thermodynamics, starting from Gaudin's treatment of Δ≥1\Delta\ge1, relied on the string hypothesis: an assumed classification of solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations (the algebraic characterisation of eigenstates of commuting transfer matrices of six-vertex (ice-rule) type by collections of complex roots) into regularly spaced patterns in the complex plane. That classification was later shown to be incomplete, undermining the rigour of those derivations even where their final formulae are believed correct.

A rigorous alternative is built on the quantum transfer matrix (QTM). Rewriting the partition function of a chain of length LL as tr e−H/T\mathrm{tr}\,e^{-H/T} and Trotter-slicing the exponential (factorising e−H/Te^{-H/T} into a long product of local exponentials), one obtains a two-dimensional classical vertex model whose row-to-row transfer matrix t^q\hat t_q - the quantum transfer matrix - acts on an auxiliary quantum space of dimension 22N2^{2N}, where NN is the Trotter number. Then f=−Tlim⁡N→∞ln⁡Λ^max⁡f=-T\lim_{N\to\infty}\ln\hat\Lambda_{\max}, where Λ^max⁡\hat\Lambda_{\max} is the eigenvalue of maximal modulus, provided that the thermodynamic (L→∞L\to\infty) and Trotter (N→∞N\to\infty) limits commute and that such a dominant eigenvalue exists and is non-degenerate. The eigenvalues of t^q\hat t_q are characterised, via the algebraic Bethe ansatz, by auxiliary non-linear integral equations (NLIE) of Destri-de Vega type. This framework, developed heuristically in the 1990s, also yields the correlation lengths as ratios Λ^k/Λ^max⁡\hat\Lambda_k/\hat\Lambda_{\max} of subdominant to dominant eigenvalues, and hence access to the low-temperature conformal structure of the model.

Göhmann, Goomanee, Kozlowski and Suzuki made this program rigorous at high temperature. For T>T0T>T_0 they proved: (i) commutativity of the thermodynamic and Trotter limits; (ii) existence of a real, non-degenerate, maximal-modulus eigenvalue of t^q\hat t_q; (iii) well-definedness of the NLIE class together with existence and uniqueness of their solutions and convergence of the finite-NN non-linear problem to its Trotter limit; and (iv) identification of the NLIE solution producing the dominant eigenvalue - culminating in a rigorous integral representation for ff. They also obtained the large-TT asymptotics of a subset of subdominant eigenvalues, namely those whose particle/hole root data lie in classes Cα,ϱϵ\mathcal{C}^{\epsilon}_{\alpha,\varrho} of the root parametrisation (in this parametrisation, the hole roots sit in a small reference domain around the origin of the auxiliary complex plane while the particle roots lie outside it, away from the singular points ±iζ\pm\mathrm{i}\zeta), thereby rigorously yielding correlation lengths; the computation of these eigenvalues reduces, to leading order in T−1T^{-1}, to Bethe ansatz equations of the spin-1 XXZ chain. Their numerics indicated that these classes capture a growing fraction (about 59-73% for Trotter numbers N=4,5,6N=4,5,6) of all eigenstates, with optimal auxiliary parameters scaling as ϵ,ϱ∝T−1/2\epsilon,\varrho\propto T^{-1/2} and δ∝T−1\delta\propto T^{-1}; they explicitly left the rigorous justification of these observations open, did not classify the remaining states (states with empty particle sets, singular roots, other scalings), did not treat temperatures below T0T_0, and did not settle completeness of the Bethe ansatz for t^q\hat t_q.

Faulmann, Göhmann and Kozlowski subsequently treated the opposite, low-temperature limit in the massless antiferromagnetic regime 0≤Δ<10\le\Delta<1: they rigorously established existence, uniqueness and the form of the solutions of the NLIE, described the part of the QTM spectrum related to the Bethe ansatz that does not collapse to zero as N→∞N\to\infty, and proved that the correlation lengths that diverge as T→0T\to0 are given, to leading order, by the spectrum of the free-boson conformal field theory of central charge c=1c=1 (the universal low-temperature effective theory of critical one-dimensional systems) - a long-standing physics conjecture. However, their identification of the true dominant eigenvalue and of the free energy at low temperature remains conditional on two conjectures: that t^q\hat t_q admits a non-degenerate dominant eigenvalue for large NN at any temperature, and that the two limits commute at any temperature - precisely the statements proven at high temperature but open at low and intermediate temperatures. They state in addition that the genuine fixed-intermediate-temperature situation still appears unreachable for want of a technique proving existence of NLIE solutions; that the regime −1<Δ<0-1<\Delta<0 is blocked by insufficient control of the dressed energy function (the solution of a Fredholm integral equation driving the leading root asymptotics); and that Bethe-ansatz completeness for the finite-NN quantum transfer matrix is, strictly speaking, still an open issue.

Problem Statement

Overarching objective: put the quantum transfer matrix (QTM) description of the thermodynamics of the spin-1/21/2 XXZ chain on complete rigorous footing, so that the finite-temperature free energy, the correlation lengths, and their low-temperature conformal limits follow from unconditional theorems valid at arbitrary temperature and anisotropy, with the QTM spectrum fully classified. The following interlinked questions, which together delimit that objective, are open.

(1) All-temperature well-posedness. For arbitrary fixed T>0T>0 in the massless regime −1<Δ<1-1<\Delta<1: prove the commutativity of the thermodynamic (L→∞L\to\infty) and Trotter (N→∞N\to\infty) limits; prove that for NN large enough the QTM t^q\hat t_q admits a real, non-degenerate dominant eigenvalue Λ^max⁡\hat\Lambda_{\max}; and prove existence and uniqueness of solutions of the auxiliary non-linear integral equation, together with convergence of the finite-NN non-linear problem to its Trotter limit. (These are Conjectures 1.3 and 1.2 of Faulmann-Göhmann-Kozlowski together with the all-TT extension of Theorem 1.1 of Göhmann-Goomanee-Kozlowski-Suzuki (2020); all are currently proven only for T>T0T>T_0, plus the T→0+T\to0^+ asymptotics for 0≤Δ<10\le\Delta<1.)

(2) Complete classification of the subdominant spectrum. Determine whether every eigenvalue of t^q\hat t_q that does not collapse to zero as N→∞N\to\infty admits a non-linear-integral-equation description: classify the states lying outside the high-temperature classes Cα,ϱϵ\mathcal{C}^{\epsilon}_{\alpha,\varrho} - states with empty particle sets, singular roots, or non-standard root scalings (the class parameters bound the root configurations: ϵ\epsilon the size of the hole roots' disc around the origin, α\alpha the exclusion discs around the singular points ±iζ\pm\mathrm{i}\zeta, ϱ\varrho a lower bound on a product over particle roots, and δ\delta the residual tolerance of the higher-level Bethe equations); prove or disprove the conjectured 'physical completeness' of the low-temperature solution set of Faulmann-Göhmann-Kozlowski (2025) - that for every τ>0\tau>0 the set can be chosen so that every eigenvalue of t^q\hat t_q that it does not describe has modulus smaller than τ\tau; rigorously justify the sharp scalings of the auxiliary parameters (ϵ,ϱ∝T−1/2\epsilon,\varrho\propto T^{-1/2}, δ∝T−1\delta\propto T^{-1}, with α\alpha essentially temperature-independent); and determine the Trotter-limit statistics of solution types - in particular whether the fraction of eigenstates captured by the known classes tends to one as N→∞N\to\infty, as the finite-NN numerics suggest.

(3) Bethe-ansatz completeness for the QTM. Establish (or refute) that the Bethe eigenvectors of the finite-NN quantum transfer matrix - the transfer matrix of a staggered six-vertex model, i.e. one whose inhomogeneity parameters alternate along the auxiliary lattice direction, taken with a diagonal twist - form a complete eigenbasis of the 22N2^{2N}-dimensional auxiliary space; this is the foundational input guaranteeing that the classifications in (2) account for all eigenstates.

(4) Regime coverage. Extend the rigorous statements of (1)-(2) to the remaining anisotropy regimes: the massive regimes ∣Δ∣≥1|\Delta|\ge1 (asserted in Göhmann-Goomanee-Kozlowski-Suzuki (2020) to require only minor modifications).

A complete answer consists of rigorous mathematical results that together resolve each of the components (1)-(4), where every item listed under a component is required for that component to be resolved: positively, through theorems with full proofs for the claimed temperature and anisotropy ranges, which remove the temperature, anisotropy, and spectral-coverage restrictions under which the QTM/NLIE thermodynamics of the spin-1/21/2 XXZ chain is currently proven; or, where an item is itself a definite claim that fails as stated, negatively, through an explicit witness refuting that item alone. Thus a certified failure of uniqueness of NLIE solutions at some fixed temperature resolves only the uniqueness item of (1); a certified degeneracy of the dominant eigenvalue for infinitely many Trotter numbers at some fixed temperature resolves only the dominant-eigenvalue item of (1); the conjectured physical completeness of (2) is resolved by a proof or by a counterexample to it; and component (4), being a request to extend (1)-(2) to the remaining anisotropy regimes, admits no negative settlement and is resolved only by positive extension results.
