The thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) of the sine-Gordon quantum field theory was recently reformulated as an explicit partially decoupled system of nonlinear integral equations valid at generic rational couplings, with the sparse kernel structure encoded in finite graphs built from the continued-fraction expansion of the coupling. These graphs are similar, but not identical, to the diagrams of the sine-Gordon Y-systems conjectured by Tateo in 1995, whose internal mathematical properties (periodicity and dilogarithm identities) were later proven using cluster algebras (commutative algebras generated by rational exchange recurrences). Whether the exact TBA of the physical model actually satisfies the conjectured Y-system functional relations — that is, whether the two systems are equivalent and related by an explicit mapping — has remained open. The problem is to prove this equivalence, constructing the transformation between the two systems for every rational coupling, or to refute it, identifying precisely which functional relations the exact TBA violates.

Background

The sine-Gordon model is an integrable quantum field theory in one spatial dimension, defined by the Hamiltonian density 12[(∂tϕ)2+(∂xϕ)2]−λcos⁡(βϕ)\frac{1}{2}[(\partial_t\phi)^2+(\partial_x\phi)^2]-\lambda\cos(\beta\phi) for a real scalar field ϕ\phi. Its elementary excitations are a kink–antikink doublet carrying topological charge ±1\pm 1, together with neutral kink–antikink bound states (breathers) in the attractive regime. It is convenient to use the renormalised coupling ξ=β2/(8π−β2)\xi=\beta^2/(8\pi-\beta^2): for ξ<1\xi<1 the model also has breather species (their number being ⌊1/ξ⌋\lfloor 1/\xi\rfloor, with 1/ξ−11/\xi-1 when 1/ξ1/\xi is an integer) of masses 2mSsin⁡(kπξ/2)2m_S\sin(k\pi\xi/2), while for ξ>1\xi>1 only the kink doublet is present; at couplings where 1/ξ1/\xi is a positive integer the kink–antikink reflection amplitude vanishes (the reflectionless points), the scattering diagonalises, and the thermodynamics is described by a finite TBA system encoded in the Dn+1D_{n+1} Dynkin diagram, a simply-laced graph of n+1n+1 nodes (here the n−1n-1 breathers together with the kink and the antikink, with n=1/ξn=1/\xi). Integrability implies that all scattering processes factorise into two-particle ones, but the kink–antikink amplitude is non-diagonal (kink and antikink interconvert), which is the source of the main technical difficulties at generic coupling.

The thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) expresses the free energy of an integrable theory on a large circle in terms of pseudo-energies ϵa(θ)\epsilon_a(\theta) — one per particle species aa as a function of the rapidity θ\theta (the hyperbolic angle parametrising the energy and momentum of a relativistic particle, E=mcosh⁡θE=m\cosh\theta, p=msinh⁡θp=m\sinh\theta) — obeying nonlinear integral equations whose kernels are Fourier transforms of the two-particle scattering phase shifts. At generic coupling, resolving the non-diagonal kink scattering à la Bethe Ansatz introduces, besides the massive particles (kinks and breathers), an infinite tower of auxiliary string-like excitations called magnons, the exact analogue of the string hypothesis of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain, and the TBA becomes an infinite coupled system. Nagy, Takács and Kormos (2024) showed that for any rational value of ξ\xi this system can be partially decoupled: expanding ξ=1/(nB+1/(ν1+1/(ν2+⋯ )))\xi=1/(n_B+1/(\nu_1+1/(\nu_2+\cdots))) as a terminating continued fraction, where nBn_B counts the breather species and the integers νi\nu_i count the magnons of each level, the kernel matrix becomes sparse and can be encoded in a finite graph assembled from six building blocks — a graphical formalism borrowed from Boulat's solution of the boundary sine-Gordon model. This decoupled TBA is the equation of state of the sine-Gordon generalised hydrodynamics (GHD), the Euler-scale theory of transport in integrable systems.

Y-systems are functional relations among functions YaY_a (essentially the exponentiated pseudo-energies, up to sign conventions) evaluated at rapidities shifted by fixed complex amounts, with the pattern of shifts and of the factors 1+Yb1+Y_b dictated by an adjacency diagram. Their constant (plateau) solutions yield Rogers dilogarithm identities (functional equations for Euler's dilogarithm) that reproduce the ultraviolet, high-temperature limit of the free energy and the central charge c=1c=1 of the free boson. For the sine-Gordon model, Tateo (1995) conjectured such Y-systems for general couplings, organised by the continued fraction of ξ\xi and generalising the Dn+1D_{n+1}-type relations of the reflectionless points. The internal mathematical content of the conjecture — periodicity of the Y-systems and the associated dilogarithm identities — was later proven by reformulating the Y-systems as cluster algebras (commutative algebras generated by rational exchange recurrences whose combinatorics controls the periodicity): for continued fractions with two terms by Nakanishi–Tateo, and in full generality via polygon realisations of type-A and type-D cluster algebras by Nakanishi–Stella. These proofs, however, treat the Y-systems as formal algebraic objects; they do not derive them from the exact scattering theory of the model, nor compare them with the physically derived TBA.

The open issue addressed here was stated at the end of that construction: the graphs of the decoupled TBA system are similar, but not identical, to the diagrams of the conjectured sine-Gordon Y-system, and establishing the equivalence of the two systems 'is an interesting task that we leave for further study'. The available consistency checks — agreement of the free energy with an independent nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) formulation at all levels tested, and of the ultraviolet central charge for at most two magnonic levels — do not involve the functional relations at all.

Problem Statement

Establish whether the partially decoupled sine-Gordon TBA system derived by Nagy–Takács–Kormos from the exact Bethe Ansatz at generic rational couplings is equivalent to the sine-Gordon Y-systems conjectured by Tateo. Concretely: either (i) construct an explicit mapping between the two systems — a redefinition of the TBA pseudo-energies/Y-functions and kernel normalisations, together with the analytic continuation in rapidity under which the decoupled TBA integral equations imply, and are implied by, Tateo's functional relations at every rational coupling (every finite continued fraction, including the reflectionless points and the exceptional cases where a continued-fraction entry equals 1 or 2) — thereby proving the Y-system conjecture for the physical model; or (ii) prove that the two systems are inequivalent as stated, exhibiting precisely which Y-system relations are violated by the exact TBA pseudo-energies. The two graph structures are observed to be 'similar but not identical', differing in the kernel sign patterns, the self-coupling kernels, and the source-term modifications introduced by the decoupling.
