The deformation - the flow of a two-dimensional quantum field theory generated by the determinant of its stress-energy tensor - is understood in the bulk at the level of the action, the S-matrix (CDD dressing), and finite-size spectra (Burgers-type flows). For a theory placed on a strip with integrable boundary conditions, however, only scattering-level consequences are known: a deformed reflection amplitude with boundary couplings , and a deformed boundary entropy (g-function) obeying a Burgers-type flow. These constructions assume, but do not derive, the boundary data. The open problem, raised by Brizio, Morone and Tateo in 'A note on deformations and boundaries' (arXiv:2410.20947) explicitly for the boundary term of the classical action and the nature of the associated deforming operators, is the first-principles action-level description of the boundary sector: how the boundary term is modified by the bulk deformation, what the boundary-deforming operators are, and - as accompanying questions of the same derivation - whether boundary counterterms or redefinitions are required and how the couplings flow with the deformation parameter . No action-level treatment of the deformed boundary sector exists in the literature: subsequent studies either remain at the scattering, form-factor or TBA level with the boundary data assumed, or address the conformal-holographic (BCFT) regime rather than the massive integrable strip. The problem remains open.
Background
In a two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory (IQFT), infinitely many conserved charges force the scattering of massive particles to factorize: all scattering data reduce to two-body amplitudes depending only on the relative rapidity (the hyperbolic parametrization of the two-particle energy-momentum). The deformation is a solvable irrelevant deformation of such theories: the Lagrangian density is flowed in a parameter by the composite operator built from the determinant of the stress-energy tensor, with (Cavaglià, Negro, Szécsényi and Tateo 2016; Smirnov and Zamolodchikov 2017). 'Irrelevant' means the perturbing operator dies off slowly at long distances and would naively require infinitely many counterterms; is exceptional because the factorization property of Zamolodchikov makes the flow solvable. Its two defining bulk consequences are: on a circle of circumference , every energy level satisfies an inviscid Burgers equation solved by characteristics, ; and the two-body S-matrix is dressed by a CDD factor (a multiplicative phase , named after Castillejo, Dalitz and Dyson, allowed by unitarity and analyticity).
When the theory lives on a strip - an interval of length in space - integrable boundary conditions can be imposed. A particle reflecting off the boundary is described by a reflection amplitude , constrained by boundary unitarity and crossing relations and by boundary bootstrap equations (Ghoshal and Zamolodchikov 1994). The boundary may also carry its own perturbing operators with couplings conventionally denoted ; in the closed-channel description a boundary condition becomes a boundary state in the Hilbert space on a circle. Each boundary contributes a universal factor to the free energy - the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy, a non-integer ground-state degeneracy that decreases along boundary renormalization-group flows (Affleck and Ludwig 1991). For IQFTs the exact ground-state -function can be computed by the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA), a set of nonlinear integral equations for pseudoenergies whose solutions encode the finite-size free energy (LeClair, Mussardo, Saleur and Skorik 1995; Dorey, Fioravanti, Rim and Tateo 2004).
When the bulk is -deformed, the deformed boundary scattering data were derived by Jiang, Loebbert and Zhong (2022) using a formalism transplanted from spin chains: the reflection amplitude becomes
where the -dependent exponential is the boundary manifestation of the bulk CDD dressing and each factor with coupling corresponds to a specific boundary perturbation. Brizio, Morone and Tateo (2024) then showed that the TBA expression for the deformed -function - in which the integrands acquire an infinite hierarchy of -dependent bulk corrections that must be resummed - coincides with the solution of a Burgers-type flow equation for the boundary entropy,
verified numerically for the free Majorana fermion with fixed-free boundary conditions.
All of these results take the deformed boundary scattering data as an input. What is missing is the derivation of these data from the Lagrangian. No first-principles analysis exists of how the flow modifies the boundary term of the classical action - where denotes the boundary Hamiltonian density, a local function of the fields evaluated at the edge of the strip (in the notation of Jiang, Loebbert and Zhong; this is unrelated to the rapidity of the scattering formulae) - of the operator nature of the boundary-deforming operators it generates, of whether boundary counterterms or redefinitions are required, or of how the boundary couplings flow with - the source paper keeps as -independent parameters without deriving this. A classical perturbative study of the sine-Gordon model (Jiang, Loebbert and Zhong 2022, Appendix A) suggests, but does not prove, a real subtlety here. The source also frames this boundary-action question as the prerequisite for treating the wider family of -like deformations with boundaries, notably the classically marginal root- flow generated by (Ferko, Sfondrini, Smith and Tartaglino-Mazzucchelli 2022).
Problem Statement
Consider a two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory on a strip with integrable boundary conditions, described at the scattering level by an undeformed reflection amplitude and boundary perturbations with couplings , and deformed in the bulk by the flow with parameter . Construct, from first principles at the level of the action, the boundary sector of the deformed theory. Specifically:
(1) Derive how the boundary term of the classical action - where is the boundary Hamiltonian density, a local function of the fields evaluated at the edge of the strip, distinct from the rapidity - is modified by the bulk deformation, and determine whether boundary counterterms or redefinitions of the boundary data are required for a consistent variational principle and quantum theory.
(2) Identify the precise operator nature of the boundary-deforming operators generated by the flow at the two endpoints of the strip.
(3) Determine how the boundary couplings entering the deformed reflection amplitude (with the particle mass and the rapidity)
flow with - in particular, whether they are -independent, as assumed in the existing TBA and form-factor analyses, or run under the deformation.
(4) Show that the constructed boundary action reproduces the deformed boundary scattering data above and the Burgers-type flow of the deformed boundary entropy .
The problem is complete when a Lagrangian-level construction is available that underpins these scattering-level and TBA-level results. The formulation covers the standard case; a construction that also covers -like flows such as root- is a natural extension but is not required for completion. The source paper lists this as the first of five future-work directions; the others - extending the ODE/IM correspondence to boundaries and crosscaps under -like deformations, the interplay with non-invertible/duality defect symmetries, and higher-dimensional generalizations - are separate problems and are not part of this problem's completion boundary.
