The massless S-matrix bootstrap constructs the exact left-right scattering amplitudes of massless integrable quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions and, through the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) and its Y-systems, determines which renormalization-group (RG) flows between two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) admit an ultraviolet (UV) completion. For the unitary coset CFTs , complete solutions of the bootstrap and crossing-unitarity equations show that only the minimal, diagonal, and saturated mixed-chirality amplitudes generate UV-complete flows, while the exclusion of the intermediate seeds () rests on numerical solutions of the plateau equations. This problem formulates the surviving open core of that program: (i) a rigorous analytic proof, or a counterexample, that the intermediate seeds admit no UV-complete flow; (ii) the UV-domain Y-system analysis identifying the marginal operators and coupling flows of the diagonal and saturated flows; (iii) extension of the full classification to the remaining simply-laced cosets (the /Ising case is now complete, including a new 'golden' flow); and (iv) the extension of the bootstrap and TBA machinery to nonunitary CFTs and flows with non-invertible symmetries, where a first infinite family has been constructed but the general classification, including the UV theory of the diagonal solution, remains open.
Background
In a (1+1)-dimensional integrable quantum field theory (QFT), scattering factorizes into two-particle amplitudes that depend only on the difference of rapidities, using the standard parametrization , of on-shell momenta. In a massless theory the excitations split into right-moving (R) and left-moving (L) particles: the same-chirality amplitudes coincide with those of a related massive integrable theory, while the mixed-chirality amplitudes encode the coupling between the sectors and are fixed by the S-matrix bootstrap equations — whenever a particle appears as a bound state of two others (at a fusion angle determined by the underlying Lie algebra), must hold — together with the crossing-unitarity relation ; unlike massive amplitudes, must be pole-free in the physical strip (the region of complex rapidity where bound-state poles live) because oppositely moving massless particles form no bound states. These equations are the on-shell remnant of deforming a conformal fixed point by the irrelevant conserved charges of the (stress-tensor) family, i.e. of the Castillejo-Dalitz-Dyson (CDD) factors in the S-matrix, in the framework introduced by Smirnov and Zamolodchikov for the space of integrable QFTs and developed by Ahn and LeClair into a classification tool for UV completions.
Given a solution, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) — a closed system of integral equations for pseudoenergies at volume — computes the finite-size ground-state energy. In the ultraviolet its constant (plateau) limits yield the effective central charge of the UV fixed point via the Rogers dilogarithm, and the periodicity of the associated -system — the discrete functional relations obeyed by the exponentiated pseudoenergies under imaginary rapidity shifts, — fixes the scaling dimension of the deforming relevant operator through . If no acceptable plateau solution exists, the partition function develops a Hagedorn-type divergence — as in string theory's exponentially growing density of states — at a finite scale before the UV limit is reached, and the flow is not UV complete.
The coset CFTs — quotient conformal theories built from Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models, current-algebra CFTs whose fields are organized by an affine Lie algebra at level — include, at , the first unitary minimal models (the discrete family of unitary CFTs that describe critical lattice systems): is the critical Ising model and the three-state Potts model , while higher-rank have central charge . Ahn (JHEP 12 (2025) 103) solved the massless bootstrap completely for : all solutions are generated by the seeds — elementary mixed-chirality amplitudes fixed by their first component with and , where is the basic hyperbolic block of the massive amplitudes (a square root of a ratio of sinh functions) and a phase introduced to satisfy the crossing-unitarity relation — and their products, and only three families generate UV-complete flows: minimal (; flow ), diagonal (; flow from the parafermionic coset (a coset CFT whose fractional-spin parafermion fields generalize the clock modes) down to ), and saturated (product ; flow from the WZW theory down to ). The intermediate seeds were excluded only numerically: solving the plateau equations for representative ranks produced no finite rational central charge, interpreted as a Hagedorn singularity. Two follow-ups by the same group have since completed the /Ising case — a full classification with four UV completions including a previously unknown 'golden' flow to the diagonal coset with along — and constructed a first infinite family of nonunitary flows (between Virasoro minimal models, labelled by their coprime Kac indices) from massless scattering theories that preserve non-invertible Verlinde defect lines — topological defect lines whose fusion does not admit inverses, generalizing ordinary global symmetries — while leaving the items in the problem statement open.
Problem Statement
The common objective is to complete the classification of ultraviolet-complete massless RG flows generated by the massless S-matrix bootstrap — determining, with analytic rather than merely numerical control, which mixed-chirality amplitudes lead to a conformal ultraviolet fixed point and what that fixed point is — across the coset families where it is currently open. Concretely, with the bootstrap equations, crossing-unitarity relations, and TBA/Y-system framework of Ahn (JHEP 12 (2025) 103):
(a) Rigorous exclusion, or refutation, for the intermediate seeds: prove analytically that no seed with (for any rank ) generates a UV-complete RG flow emanating from the coset CFT — that is, a flow whose infrared fixed point is and which reaches a conformal ultraviolet fixed point — for example, by showing that the plateau (constant-TBA) equations for these seeds admit no positive real solution with finite rational effective central charge, or that a Hagedorn-type divergence necessarily arises first — or refute the claim by exhibiting such a seed together with its full amplitude table, TBA/Y-system, and UV plateau.
(b) Marginal UV deformations of the diagonal and saturated flows: for the diagonal (, ) and saturated () amplitudes, whose Y-systems have infinite periodicity signalling a marginal () UV deformation, carry out the UV-domain Y-system analysis and identify the marginal operator(s) — their operator content and coupling flows — matching the TBA side to the parafermionic coset and the WZW ultraviolet theories, respectively.
(c) Remaining simply-laced cosets: extend the complete classification — all pole-free bootstrap solutions with their crossing-unitarity checks, TBA/Y-system derivations, and UV-completeness analysis — to , , and their cosets, determining whether flow types beyond the minimal/diagonal/saturated pattern arise (the /Ising case is already complete, where one new type was found).
(d) Nonunitary and symmetry-enriched flows: extend the bootstrap constraints and TBA machinery to RG flows between nonunitary CFTs and to theories with non-invertible symmetries beyond the constructed family — in particular, complete the classification of the remaining pole-free mixed-chirality amplitudes there and identify the ultraviolet CFT of the diagonal solution with .
Items (a)-(c) close the unitary simply-laced program on a rigorous footing; item (d) extends the same machinery to settings where Zamolodchikov's c-theorem (the monotonic decrease of the central charge along unitary RG flows) and reflection positivity are unavailable.
