Two-dimensional integrable quantum field theories with an internal Zn\mathbb{Z}_n grading have recently been constructed by reparametrising the rapidity plane into an nn-sheeted cover, producing graded S-matrices whose large-rapidity expansion contains a tower of fractional-spin conserved charges alongside the usual integer-spin ones. Dressing these amplitudes with CDD factors Fakbℓ(ϑ,s)=exp⁡(iμqs,aqs,bsinh⁡(sfk−ℓ(ϑ)))\mathcal{F}_{a_k b_\ell}(\vartheta,s)=\exp(i\mu q_{s,a}q_{s,b}\sinh(s f_{k-\ell}(\vartheta))) defines fractional-spin analogues of the TTˉT\bar T deformation. The source paper (Brizio, Morone, Primi and Tateo, JHEP 03 (2026) 137) established only restricted consistency: physical-strip analyticity, generalised braiding unitarity and crossing, trivialisation of the deformation when all Zn\mathbb{Z}_n sectors are combined, and a Hagedorn-like square-root branch structure of the ground state in the exactly solvable ultraviolet limit of the free graded theory, for one sign of the flow parameter. It explicitly remains open to determine the full analytic structure, the locality (operator) status, and the ultraviolet behaviour of these deformations beyond the solvable limits, and to characterise how they modify the graded thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and generalised Gibbs ensembles. No resolution of this problem is known in the literature to date.

Background

In a two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory (IQFT), scattering is purely elastic and factorised: every multi-particle process decomposes into two-body collisions, so the interaction is completely encoded in the two-particle S-matrix Sab(ϑ)S_{ab}(\vartheta), a function of the rapidity difference ϑ\vartheta (the relativistic parametrisation in which a particle of mass mm has energy mcosh⁡ϑm\cosh\vartheta and momentum msinh⁡ϑm\sinh\vartheta). Bootstrap consistency — unitarity, crossing symmetry and the Yang–Baxter factorisation condition — constrains but does not uniquely fix SS: it may be dressed by Castillejo–Dalitz–Dyson (CDD) factors, extra meromorphic multiplicative factors first discussed by Castillejo, Dalitz and Dyson in 1956 in the context of Low's scattering equation, which respect unitarity and crossing while adding poles or zeros beyond those required by the physical bound-state spectrum. The minimal S-matrix carries exactly the bound-state poles; CDD dressing generates the remaining admissible solutions.

A prominent instance is the TTˉT\bar T deformation (Smirnov and Zamolodchikov, 2017): deforming a two-dimensional QFT by the composite of light-cone stress-tensor components is equivalent, at the S-matrix level, to multiplying by the CDD factor exp⁡(iμp1p2)\exp(i\mu p_1 p_2) with p1,p2p_1,p_2 the colliding particles' momenta. The deformed finite-volume energies obey an inviscid-Burgers-type flow equation and develop square-root branch points beyond which they become complex — read thermodynamically, a Hagedorn-like limiting temperature at which the density of states grows exponentially and the standard continuation of the spectrum breaks down. Deformations generated by higher-spin conserved charges act similarly as CDD factors (Hernández-Chifflet, Negro and Sfondrini, 2020), and their Hagedorn behaviour has been analysed for integer spin (Camilo, Fleury, Lencsés, Negro and Zamolodchikov, 2021).

The source paper (Brizio, Morone, Primi and Tateo, 2026) introduces Zn\mathbb{Z}_n-graded IQFTs. Conformal maps fk(ϑ)=ξn(ϑ−2πi wk)f_k(\vartheta)=\frac{\xi}{n}\big(\vartheta-2\pi i\, w k\big), k∈Znk\in\mathbb{Z}_n, reorganise the rapidity plane into an nn-sheeted covering with cyclic Zn\mathbb{Z}_n structure, and the graded amplitude is the pullback Sakbℓ(ϑ)=Sab(fk−ℓ(ϑ))S_{a_k b_\ell}(\vartheta)=S_{ab}(f_{k-\ell}(\vartheta)) of a minimal diagonal (reflectionless) amplitude of ADET type — the simply-laced ADE affine-Toda-like scattering theories and their tadpole extensions, for which scattering is transmissive and particles correspond to nodes of the Dynkin diagram. Closure of the graded bootstrap requires n=2wh+ξn=2wh+\xi, with hh the Coxeter number of the underlying algebra, ww a positive integer and ξ=±1\xi=\pm 1. Braiding unitarity is preserved, crossing is generalised to a transformation pairing charge conjugation with a cyclic shift of the sheet index, and the large-rapidity expansion of the graded amplitudes contains, alongside the protected tower of integer-spin conserved charges, terms with fractional effective spins s/ns/n — reminiscent of the fractional-spin nonlocal conserved charges long known in sine-Gordon theory from the large-rapidity asymptotics of Baxter's Q-functions (Bazhanov, Lukyanov and Zamolodchikov, 1996, 1997).

This fractional-spin tower motivates the fractional-spin CDD factors

Fakbℓ(ϑ,s)=exp⁡(iμ qs,a qs,b sinh⁡(s fk−ℓ(ϑ)))\mathcal{F}_{a_k b_\ell}(\vartheta,s)=\exp\big(i\mu\, q_{s,a}\, q_{s,b}\, \sinh(s\, f_{k-\ell}(\vartheta))\big)

where qs,aq_{s,a} is the rest-frame eigenvalue of the spin-ss conserved charge on particle species aa and μ\mu is the flow parameter. The paper proves these are consistent deformations only in a limited sense: they are analytic in the physical strip 0<Im ϑ<π0<\mathrm{Im}\,\vartheta<\pi, satisfy generalised braiding unitarity and crossing, preserve factorisation, and trivialise (their product over all Zn\mathbb{Z}_n sectors equals one) when the full sector combination is taken. In the free graded theory, the induced flow acts on the generalised temperature conjugate to a spin-ss charge as the Burgers-type relation Es(βs;μ)=Es(βs+μEs;0)E_s(\beta_s;\mu)=E_s(\beta_s+\mu E_s;0), and in the massless ultraviolet limit the ground-state energy develops a square-root branch point at a critical radius R∗=−βμ/8πR_*=-\beta\mu/8\pi, below which it becomes complex, with a Hagedorn-like finite limiting temperature for one sign of μ\mu. This analysis is restricted to the ground state, to the exactly solvable ultraviolet limit, and to regimes where no singularity crosses the integration contour of the thermodynamic equations.

What is not known is whether these deformations define consistent quantum field theories in general: their analytic structure on the full multi-sheet rapidity domain, whether they are generated by local or quasilocal objects (quasilocal meaning local only in an infinite-volume or thermodynamic limit) or only by genuinely nonlocal charges, their ultraviolet behaviour beyond the solvable limits, and how they modify the graded Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA — the exact integral-equation machinery computing finite-volume spectra from the S-matrix) and the Generalised Gibbs Ensembles (GGE — statistical ensembles built from all conserved charges rather than the Hamiltonian alone) in which the graded construction is naturally embedded. A related earlier construction exists: the colour-valued S-matrices of Fring and Korff (2000) implement a grading through a generalised CDD factor that leaves the minimal scattering block untouched, whereas the graded construction of the source paper acts already on the minimal block — a contrast that sharpens the question of what the fractional-spin CDD dressing actually does.

Problem Statement

The problem, in the source paper's own words, is: 'It remains an open problem to study their analyticity, locality, and UV behaviours, as well as to understand how they affect TBA/GGE flows' — where 'they' are the fractional-spin CDD deformations of Zn\mathbb{Z}_n-graded S-matrices, i.e. the multiplicative factors Fakbℓ(ϑ,s)=exp⁡(iμqs,aqs,bsinh⁡(sfk−ℓ(ϑ)))\mathcal{F}_{a_k b_\ell}(\vartheta,s)=\exp(i\mu q_{s,a}q_{s,b}\sinh(s f_{k-\ell}(\vartheta))) dressing the graded amplitudes Sakbℓ(ϑ)=Sab(fk−ℓ(ϑ))S_{a_k b_\ell}(\vartheta)=S_{ab}(f_{k-\ell}(\vartheta)) defined through the nn-sheeted rapidity reparametrisation with closure condition n=2wh+ξn=2wh+\xi. Unpacked, the question asks:

(i) Analyticity: what is the full analytic structure of the deformed graded amplitudes — pole, zero and branch content on the entire nn-sheeted rapidity domain, beyond the physical strip in which analyticity is already established — and which branches of the deformed finite-volume spectrum correspond to physical theories?

(ii) Locality: do the fractional-spin CDD deformations correspond to deformations by local operators or charges (or quasilocal ones), or are they intrinsically nonlocal? Is there an operator-level or Lagrangian characterisation of the deformation itself, as distinct from the microscopic origin of the grading?

(iii) Ultraviolet behaviour: what is the ultraviolet density of states and the Hagedorn-like behaviour beyond the solvable limits — for both signs of the flow parameter μ\mu, for generic nn and spin ss, and including excited states — and does the limiting temperature found in the free-theory ultraviolet limit persist and generalise?

(iv) Flows: how do the deformations modify the graded TBA equations and the GGE structure — in particular the analytic continuation of the equations when the moving (logarithmic) singularities of the pseudoenergies cross the integration contours as the deformation is switched on?

A resolution must settle (i)–(iv) for the graded theories of the source paper as defined, not merely for the special exactly solvable subcases already treated there. Each part counts as settled only by a complete answer at the generality stated in that part; a partial result on one part does not by itself resolve the task.
