The TTˉT\bar{T} deformation of two-dimensional quantum field theories can be realized on the lattice: deforming the cut-off rapidity — equivalently the lattice spacing — of the light-cone lattice regularization of the sine-Gordon model in an energy-dependent way yields, in the continuum limit, the TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed theory while preserving Yang-Baxter integrability (Y. Jiang, Symmetry 15 (2023) 2212). By the author's own account the prescription is ad hoc, and three linked questions remain open: (1) whether the deformation can be derived from a more fundamental principle, such as coupling the integrable lattice model to a discrete 'lattice gravity' whose degrees of freedom, once integrated out, produce the state-dependent rescaling; (2) whether analogous deformations of other lattice regularizations of the same continuum integrable field theory — the integrable XYZ-chain discretization, or standard integrability-breaking discretizations — also reproduce the TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed continuum theory, and which features (in particular the energy-dependent lattice spacing) are universal; and (3) whether the prescription can deliver non-perturbative TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed correlation functions at finite lattice size, to be compared with the continuum proposals.

Background

Two-dimensional quantum field theories possess a remarkable irrelevant deformation: the TTˉT\bar{T} deformation, generated by the composite operator det⁡Tμν\det T_{\mu\nu} built from the stress-energy tensor and defined by point splitting. Introduced as a flow ∂tL=TTˉt\partial_t\mathcal{L}=T\bar{T}_t on the space of integrable quantum field theories (IQFTs) by Smirnov and Zamolodchikov and by Cavaglià, Negro, Szécsényi and Tateo, it multiplies the two-particle S-matrix by a CDD factor (a momentum-dependent pure phase, named after Castillejo, Dalitz and Dyson, that introduces no new pole in the physical strip) and relates the finite-volume energy E(R,t)E(R,t) and momentum P(R,t)P(R,t) on a circle of radius RR to the undeformed ones through Rt=R2+2tRE+t2(E2−P2)R_t=\sqrt{R^2+2tRE+t^2(E^2-P^2)}; the deformation is solvable although irrelevant and modifies only the ultraviolet physics. The deformed theory is nevertheless non-local, and the precise nature of this non-locality is an acknowledged open issue. In the continuum there is an instructive microscopic interpretation: coupling the theory to a simple JT-like gravity (Jackiw–Teitelboim gravity, a two-dimensional dilaton model) and integrating out the gravity degrees of freedom produces exactly the dynamical, state-dependent change of coordinates characteristic of TTˉT\bar{T} (Dubovsky, Gorbenko and Mirbabayi); equivalently, the deformation implements a finite radial cutoff in holography (McGough, Mezei and Verlinde). A complementary non-perturbative viewpoint is the lattice. Integrable 2D QFTs can be regularized preserving integrability: in the light-cone lattice approach of Destri and de Vega, spacetime is discretized along the light-cone directions and the sine-Gordon model (equivalently the massive Thirring model, a theory of a massive Dirac fermion with a four-fermion current-current interaction) corresponds to the six-vertex model, a two-dimensional ice-type lattice model with arrow degrees of freedom on edges, whose transfer matrix — the row-to-row evolution operator generating commuting conserved charges — is diagonalized exactly by Bethe ansatz in terms of rapidity variables. The inhomogeneities of the vertex model (site-dependent shifts of the spectral parameter, one per lattice site) encode the bare rapidities, restricted to a window set by a cut-off rapidity Θ\Theta; with the mass scale mm held fixed, Θ∼log⁡(4N/mR)\Theta\sim\log(4N/mR) plays the role of the inverse lattice spacing for NN sites, and the finite-volume spectrum follows from a non-linear integral equation (NLIE, the Destri–de Vega equation) for a counting function. Jiang (2023) showed that the TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed sine-Gordon model arises in the continuum limit of an explicitly integrable but non-local deformation of this lattice model: the inhomogeneities θn=±Θ\theta_n=\pm\Theta are shifted to θn(t)=(−1)n+1(Θ+σ(t))+μ(t)\theta_n(t)=(-1)^{n+1}(\Theta+\sigma(t))+\mu(t) with σ(t)=log⁡(R/Rt)\sigma(t)=\log(R/R_t) and μ(t)=arcsinh(tP/Rt)\mu(t)=\mathrm{arcsinh}(tP/R_t), where EE and PP are the total energy and momentum of the state, determined self-consistently. Since the R-matrix (the elementary local two-site interaction weight, the building block of the transfer matrix) is untouched, the Yang-Baxter equation (the consistency condition guaranteeing factorized scattering, equivalently commutativity of transfer matrices) is preserved; the deformation is non-local because the rescaling depends on global quantities. At fixed mass it amounts to an energy-dependent lattice spacing at∼aRt/Ra_t\sim aR_t/R, a 'dynamical lattice' mirroring the dynamical coordinates of the continuum picture. The proposal was verified at the free-fermion point of the six-vertex model (the parameter value at which it reduces to a Gaussian free-fermion model): the deformed Bethe equations are solved self-consistently at finite NN (explicitly for the ground state, with an N=2N=2 example), and the continuum limit reproduces the known TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed NLIE. What remains open is the status of this prescription. First, it is admittedly ad hoc — the cut-off rapidity must be deformed in one very specific way — and no derivation from a more primitive principle is known; a natural model for what such a derivation could look like exists, since the six-vertex model on a random lattice is exactly solvable and corresponds to coupling the continuum theory to Liouville gravity (Kostov), just as JT-like gravity generates the deformation in the continuum. Second, a given QFT admits many lattice regularizations — standard field discretizations that break integrability, and an alternative integrable discretization of sine-Gordon related to the XYZ spin chain, the fully anisotropic member of the Heisenberg spin-chain family whose Boltzmann weights are elliptic functions (Luther; Lüscher) — and it is unknown whether deformations of those regularizations also produce the TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed continuum theory. Third, the undeformed light-cone lattice already yields exact finite-volume expectation values of local operators (Hegedüs), while in the deformed theory correlation functions are only partially known in the continuum — momentum-space results for CFTs (Cardy), form-factor expansions (built on the matrix elements of local operators between asymptotic multiparticle states) for IQFTs at two-particle level with convergence failing for one sign of the deformation parameter (Castro-Alvaredo, Negro and Sailis) — so a lattice computation would be a genuine non-perturbative cross-check. Related but distinct: TTˉT\bar{T}-type deformations of one-dimensional quantum spin chains (Pozsgay, Jiang and Takács) deform the chain itself rather than regularizing a two-dimensional field theory.

Problem Statement

The common objective is to determine whether the energy-dependent cut-off deformation of the light-cone lattice constitutes a fundamental, universal, and usable non-perturbative realization of the TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed sine-Gordon model, in the sense of (1)–(3) below (each part admits an affirmative or a negative outcome), replacing the ad hoc prescription of Jiang (2023). Three linked results are requested. (1) Microscopic derivation: formulate a more primitive lattice principle — for example coupling the integrable lattice model to discrete 'lattice gravity' degrees of freedom, in the spirit of the random-lattice/Liouville-gravity constructions of the six-vertex model — from which the state-dependent shift of the cut-off rapidity, Θ→Θt\Theta\to\Theta_t with e−σ(t)=Rt/Re^{-\sigma(t)}=R_t/R and Rt=R2+2tRE+t2(E2−P2)R_t=\sqrt{R^2+2tRE+t^2(E^2-P^2)}, follows by integrating out those degrees of freedom, in analogy with the continuum derivation of the dynamical change of coordinates from JT-like gravity. (2) Universality across regularizations: for other lattice regularizations of the same continuum integrable field theory — at minimum the integrable XYZ-chain discretization of sine-Gordon, and ideally also standard integrability-breaking discretizations — determine which deformations of the lattice model reproduce the TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed continuum theory (e.g. yield the CDD-dressed S-matrix and the RtR_t energy relation in the continuum limit), and identify which features are universal; in particular, whether the energy-dependent effective lattice spacing is a universal mechanism. (3) Deformed correlation functions: using the lattice prescription (or its derived/universal counterpart), compute TTˉT\bar{T}-deformed expectation values of at least one non-trivial local operator at finite NN — extending the undeformed light-cone-lattice correlator technology — control the continuum limit, and compare with the continuum proposals (momentum-space CFT results, form-factor expansions). The three parts are linked in motivation — together they bear on whether the deformation reflects a fundamental, regularization-independent mechanism rather than a trick — but each is a separate, independently checkable question with its own completion boundary, and a complete resolution addresses all three; settling only one part does not resolve the task. As posed in the conclusions of Jiang (2023), the three directions are separate open questions about the prescription.
