In two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory, the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev (ZF) algebra of asymptotic creation operators can carry non-trivial exchange (braiding) relations, in which case the standard crossing equation relating particle-particle and particle-antiparticle scattering must be modified. Frolov, Polvara and Sfondrini (J. Phys. A 58 (2025) 415402) derived the general modified crossing equation, verified it for the SU(N) chiral Gross-Neveu model and the Phi_21 deformation of the tricritical Ising model, and conjectured that the massless excitations of the mixed-flux AdS3 x S3 x T4 superstring obey non-trivial exchange relations of SU(2) chiral Gross-Neveu type; this flips the sign of the massless crossing equation and yields a simpler massless dressing factor, dropping the extra function a(gamma_1 - gamma_2) of earlier proposals. No first-principles derivation of the conjectured exchange relations is presently known: no later work derives the braiding matrix or the singlet (charge-conjugation) matrix from the worldsheet theory or from a quantum-group/categorical symmetry. Validation has advanced substantially - the dressing factors were completed, the mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (the integral-equation method relating the exact S-matrix to the finite-volume spectrum) was constructed and solved consistently (including published tensionless-limit numerics), and the extended Y-system was derived and shown equivalent - but the Quantum Spectral Curve (the exact finite-volume spectral equation) derivation remains unfinished. The open problem is to derive the postulated exchange relations from first principles, with all their algebraic consistency conditions.

Background

In a two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory, scattering factorizes into independent two-particle processes, and the exact two-particle S-matrix can be fixed by symmetry and consistency conditions. The asymptotic creation operators AA†(p)A^\dagger_A(p), labelled by momentum pp and internal index AA, form the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev (ZF) algebra, in which exchanging two creation operators produces the two-particle S-matrix, A1†A2†=A2†A1†S12A^\dagger_1 A^\dagger_2 = A^\dagger_2 A^\dagger_1 S_{12} [Zamolodchikov and Zamolodchikov 1979; Faddeev 1980]. Fields in two dimensions need not be bosons or fermions: they may obey non-trivial exchange (braiding) relations, A1†A2†=A2†A1†R12A^\dagger_1 A^\dagger_2 = A^\dagger_2 A^\dagger_1 \mathcal{R}_{12}, with a braid matrix R12\mathcal{R}_{12} [Leinaas and Myrheim 1977], a possibility related to quantum-group generalized statistics by Smirnov [1990]. When this happens, the ZF S-matrix SS differs from the physical S-matrix S\mathcal{S} that enters scattering amplitudes, and crossing symmetry - the analytic continuation p→pˉ=−pp \to \bar p = -p that relates a particle's scattering to its antiparticle's - acquires corrections.

Frolov, Polvara and Sfondrini (FPS) [arXiv:2506.04096] derived the general form of the modified crossing equation. Constructing a singlet state Ξ(p)=A†(p) C A†t(pˉ)\Xi(p) = A^\dagger(p)\,\mathscr{C}\,A^{\dagger t}(\bar p), a particle-antiparticle combination annihilated by all symmetry charges, with C\mathscr{C} a charge-conjugation-type matrix, and requiring that ZF operators move through it consistently, they obtained

S12(p1,p2) C1 S12 t1(pˉ1,p2)  =  R12(p1,p2) C1 R~12 t1(pˉ1,p2) ,S_{12}(p_1,p_2)\,\mathscr{C}_1\,S^{\,t_1}_{12}(\bar p_1,p_2) \;=\; \mathcal{R}_{12}(p_1,p_2)\,\mathscr{C}_1\,\tilde{\mathcal{R}}^{\,t_1}_{12}(\bar p_1,p_2)\,,

which reduces to the ordinary crossing equation when R12\mathcal{R}_{12} is trivial (bosons or fermions); here t1t_1 denotes transposition in the first tensor factor and pˉ=−p\bar p=-p is the crossed (antiparticle) momentum. The crossed-channel braiding matrix R~12(pˉ1,p2)\tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{12}(\bar p_1,p_2) is obtained by first analytically continuing S12(p1,p2)S_{12}(p_1,p_2) to S12(pˉ1,p2)S_{12}(\bar p_1,p_2) and then taking the limit of trivial scattering; in all examples treated by FPS one has R~12=R12\tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{12}=\mathcal{R}_{12}. The braiding matrix must satisfy physical and braiding unitarity (R21R12=Π12\mathcal{R}_{21}\mathcal{R}_{12} = \Pi_{12}, with Π12\Pi_{12} the projector onto the physical subspace in models with a restricted Hilbert space, where some multiparticle states are null), the Yang-Baxter equation (the consistency condition of factorized three-particle scattering), and a singlet constraint tying R\mathcal{R}, R~\tilde{\mathcal{R}} and C\mathscr{C} together. FPS verified the framework on two models where the answer is known: the SU(N) chiral Gross-Neveu (CGN) model, an asymptotically free model of N interacting Dirac fermions whose exchange relations and phase-modified crossing had been found earlier by quantum-group methods, and the Φ21\Phi_{21} deformation of the tricritical Ising model, whose known S-matrix violates naive crossing; in these cases R\mathcal{R} and C\mathscr{C} are derived, not assumed. Related recent work connects such modified crossing to invariance under categorical (non-invertible) symmetries [Copetti, Córdova and Komatsu 2024, 2025].

The open instance is the AdS3 x S3 x T4 superstring supported by a mixture of Ramond-Ramond (RR) and Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz (NSNS) flux - the light-cone gauge worldsheet theory underlying the AdS3/CFT2 holographic correspondence. Its exact two-body worldsheet S-matrix [Borsato et al. 2014; Lloyd et al. 2015] contains massive excitations and, from the T4 directions, massless ones. The scalar dressing factors are fixed by crossing; the previous solution [Frolov and Sfondrini 2022] required an extra function a(γ1−γ2)a(\gamma_1-\gamma_2) (with γi=γ(pi)\gamma_i=\gamma(p_i) a rapidity-type variable of that reference) in the massless-massless sector, which appeared incompatible with the analytic constraints of the Quantum Spectral Curve (QSC), an exact finite-volume spectral equation [Ekhammar, Gromov and Stefanski 2025]. FPS conjectured that the massless ZF fields instead obey non-trivial exchange relations of the same type as the SU(2) CGN model, with braid phase e∓iπ sgn(v1−v2)/2e^{\mp i\pi\,\mathrm{sgn}(v_1-v_2)/2} (viv_i are mode velocities), so that the massless-massless sector is braided; they note that similar non-trivial exchange between massive and massless representations is possible (even suggestive) though it would leave the physical S-matrix unchanged, and that for the massive-massive sector they see no rationale to introduce non-trivial exchange relations. The conjecture flips the sign of the massless crossing equation,

Σ∘∘(pˉ1,p2) Σ∘∘(p1,p2)  =  − f∘∘(p1,p2) ,\Sigma_{\circ\circ}(\bar p_1,p_2)\,\Sigma_{\circ\circ}(p_1,p_2) \;=\; -\,f_{\circ\circ}(p_1,p_2)\,,

where Σ∘∘\Sigma_{\circ\circ} is the massless-massless dressing factor and f∘∘f_{\circ\circ} the crossing factor associated with the supersymmetry-fixed block of the massless S-matrix, and the solution then drops a(γ1−γ2)a(\gamma_1-\gamma_2) - a simpler dressing factor compatible with near-BMN perturbation theory (the weak-tension expansion around the free-string plane-wave limit) and with the analytic structure surmised from the QSC. The conjecture is self-consistent but not derived: FPS postulate the braiding by analogy with SU(2) CGN, because the 'trivial-scattering' limit through which exchange relations are normally read off is ill-defined for these massless modes (the BMN limit gives interacting, infrared-subtle relativistic modes), and no worldsheet or symmetry-principle derivation of R\mathcal{R} or C\mathscr{C} is known.

Problem Statement

Derive from first principles - from the light-cone gauge worldsheet sigma model of the mixed-flux AdS3 x S3 x T4 superstring, or from an identified underlying symmetry principle (a quantum-group symmetry or a categorical/non-invertible symmetry) - the non-trivial exchange relations that Frolov, Polvara and Sfondrini conjectured for the massless Zamolodchikov-Faddeev fields. A complete answer should:

  1. Obtain, rather than postulate, the braiding matrix R12\mathcal{R}_{12} for the massless modes (conjectured to be of SU(2) chiral Gross-Neveu type, with braid phase e∓iπ sgn(v1−v2)/2e^{\mp i\pi\,\mathrm{sgn}(v_1-v_2)/2}, where viv_i are the velocities of the two scattering massless modes, and non-trivial exchange postulated in the massless-massless sector) and the singlet-defining charge-conjugation matrix C\mathscr{C}.

  2. Verify that the derived objects satisfy the algebraic consistency conditions: physical and braiding unitarity (with the projector Π12\Pi_{12} onto the physical subspace), the Yang-Baxter equation, and the singlet constraint R12 C1 R~12 t1(pˉ1,p2)=C1 K2\mathcal{R}_{12}\,\mathscr{C}_1\,\tilde{\mathcal{R}}^{\,t_1}_{12}(\bar p_1,p_2) = \mathscr{C}_1\,K_2, where t1t_1 is transposition in the first tensor factor, pˉ1=−p1\bar p_1=-p_1 is the crossed momentum, R~12\tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{12} is the crossed-channel braiding matrix defined in the Background, and K2(p1,p2)K_2(p_1,p_2) - a matrix acting on the second tensor factor - is a priori arbitrary but is fixed by this very constraint (it is the identity for ordinary bosons or fermions).

  3. Show that the modified crossing equation with its extra minus sign, Σ∘∘(pˉ1,p2) Σ∘∘(p1,p2)=−f∘∘(p1,p2)\Sigma_{\circ\circ}(\bar p_1,p_2)\,\Sigma_{\circ\circ}(p_1,p_2) = -f_{\circ\circ}(p_1,p_2), and the simplified massless dressing factor (without the function a(γ1−γ2)a(\gamma_1-\gamma_2) of Frolov-Sfondrini 2022) follow from the derivation - or identify precisely where and how the FPS conjecture must be corrected.

An answer that instead refutes the conjecture - by showing from first principles that the massless modes obey ordinary bosonic/fermionic exchange relations, or that the modified crossing is inconsistent with validated data - is admissible and resolves the problem in the opposite direction.

The data that currently support the conjecture - near-BMN perturbation theory for the physical S-matrix, the solved mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (the integral-equation framework that computes the finite-volume spectrum from the exact S-matrix) including the published tensionless-limit numerics, and the analytic constraints surmised from the Quantum Spectral Curve program, whose derivation for this background is not yet complete - provide context for the problem.
