The free-field (Coulomb-gas/Wakimoto) construction of the minimal-series W-algebras — the W-algebra generalizations of the Virasoro minimal models attached to a simple Lie algebra at admissible levels — and of their boundary Ishibashi states rests on two unproven conjectures. (a) The free-field resolution (BRST-image) conjecture, named after the Becchi–Rouet–Stora–Tyutin cohomological formalism: the zeroth cohomology of a Weyl-graded Fock-space screening complex realizes the irreducible admissible module of , with vanishing higher cohomology; this is proven only in the /Virasoro case, and even the case has remained conjectural since 1990. (b) The zero-mode eigenvalue conjecture: the eigenvalues of the W zero modes on a highest-weight module are the elementary symmetric polynomials in the shifted free-field momenta ; this is known only for and . Both conjectures are open.
Background
Two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) is largely organized by its chiral symmetry algebra, the algebra of holomorphic fields. The Virasoro minimal models, built from the stress-energy tensor alone, are the classic exactly solved family; their higher-symmetry generalizations are the W-algebras, chiral algebras extending the Virasoro algebra by finitely many additional holomorphic currents of spin 3 and higher. For a simple Lie algebra with affine Kac–Moody algebra , the minimal-series W-algebras arise from the coset construction of at admissible levels — encoded by a pair of coprime integers with and , where and are the Coxeter and dual Coxeter numbers of — or equivalently from the Drinfeld–Sokolov reduction, a BRST (Becchi–Rouet–Stora–Tyutin) constraint procedure imposing gauge fixing on an affine current algebra; for one recovers the ordinary Virasoro minimal models. Here and denote the Weyl vector and dual Weyl vector of — the half-sums of the positive roots and of the positive coroots, respectively — and the two screening charges of the model carry parameters and fixed by .
The workhorse technique for computing in these models is the free-field (Coulomb-gas or Wakimoto) realization: currents are represented in terms of free bosons, representation modules become Fock spaces labeled by a momentum vector , and the chiral algebra is characterized by its screening operators — special vertex operators that commute with it. In this language the irreducible modules of a Virasoro minimal model are obtained by Felder's theorem: each irreducible module is realized as the zeroth cohomology of a finite complex of Fock spaces connected by screenings and graded by the Weyl group of , with higher cohomology vanishing. This free-field resolution is what makes Coulomb-gas integrals a rigorous tool at .
For general the analogous statement is only conjectural. Bouwknegt, McCarthy and Pilch constructed the screening complex and explicitly stated as a conjecture that it resolves the irreducible modules, extending the construction to W-algebra modules through the quantum Drinfeld–Sokolov reduction. The resulting BRST-image (free-field resolution) conjecture asserts that, for an admissible weight , the zeroth cohomology of the Weyl-graded Fock complex is the irreducible module of and the higher cohomology vanishes. Only the case is proven (Felder for the Virasoro minimal models, Bernard–Felder for the affine algebra, and Bouwknegt–McCarthy–Pilch for all Virasoro highest-weight modules with ). Even for — the case with a single extra spin-3 current — the cohomology statement was still described only as expected, with character agreement as evidence, in the 2003 free-boson boundary-state treatment of Caldeira, Kawai and Wheater; and the only available Fock resolutions at higher rank, due to Niedermaier, hold at irrational (generic) screening parameter, which excludes the rational minimal-model points.
A second, complementary conjecture concerns the zero modes. The zero modes of the W currents (their constant terms) act diagonalizably on highest-weight modules, and their eigenvalues label the W primaries. In the free-field picture the conjecture is that equals the elementary symmetric polynomial of order — the sum over all -element subsets of the product of the selected variables — in the shifted momenta , where the are the weights of the defining representation used in the Wakimoto realization. This is known for and for (Bouwknegt–Schoutens) and is conjectured for all simple , with a covariance under the reflection , being the spin of the -th W generator.
Both conjectures are load-bearing for boundary CFT. Boundary states of a CFT defined on surfaces with boundary are built from Ishibashi states — solutions of the gluing conditions of the full chiral algebra that pair left and right movers. For models, the source paper expands the W-Ishibashi states as Weyl sums over the free-field screening lattice and uses them to compute disk correlation functions as screening integrals, evaluated through Lauricella-type series (a family of generalized hypergeometric series) with Pochhammer-contour regularization, i.e. contours encircling the integrands' branch points, which keep the screening integrals finite. The correctness of that expansion, and of the momentum-to-W-primary dictionary it needs, is exactly what the resolution conjecture and the zero-mode eigenvalue conjecture would certify.
Modern rigorous theory supplies adjacent but non-equivalent results. Arakawa's proof of the Frenkel–Kac–Wakimoto conjecture gives two-sided BGG (Bernstein–Gelfand–Gelfand) resolutions of admissible representations by Verma-type modules — modules induced from a Borel subalgebra — not by free-field Fock spaces. Arakawa and van Ekeren established modularity, rationality and fusion rules of principal affine W-algebras at admissible levels by non-free-field means. Dhillon proved that Drinfeld–Sokolov reduction sends admissible affine modules to the expected minimal-series W-modules, identifying which modules arise without resolving them by Fock complexes. Genra characterized affine W-algebras as intersections of screening kernels — a realization theorem, not a module resolution. None of these settles the two conjectures above.
Problem Statement
Settle, for every simple Lie algebra (including the non-simply-laced types , , , ) and every admissible level of — in the source paper's conventions, the levels parametrized by the coprime pairs satisfying , and , where and are the Coxeter and dual Coxeter numbers of and is the ratio of squared long- to short-root lengths of (equal to 1 in the simply-laced case) — the following two conjectures, each of which may be settled by a proof in the stated generality or by an explicit counterexample. Throughout, and denote the Weyl and dual Weyl vectors of , and are the two screening parameters fixed by , and are the weights of the defining (vector) representation of .
(a) Free-field resolution (BRST-image) conjecture. For every admissible highest weight , the zeroth cohomology of the Weyl-graded Fock screening complex is isomorphic to the irreducible module of the minimal-series W-algebra , and the higher cohomology of the complex vanishes; together with its coset (semi-simple) variant, in which the corresponding statement for the BRST-image complex of a direct sum of affine algebras is reduced to the simple case.
(b) W zero-mode eigenvalue conjecture. The eigenvalues of the zero modes of the W currents on a highest-weight module of highest weight are the elementary symmetric polynomials of order in the variables , generalizing the proven and cases.
These two statements jointly certify the Weyl-sum free-field expansion of the Ishibashi states and the momentum-to-W-primary dictionary of the boundary free-field program; a complete answer must resolve both (a) and (b), proving or refuting each in the stated generality, and, where a refutation is given, identify explicitly the algebra, level and highest weight at which the conjecture fails.
