Two Zamolodchikov-type recursion relations compute Virasoro conformal blocks at generic central charge: Al. B. Zamolodchikov's elliptic recursion for 4-point sphere blocks, and its analogue for 1-point torus blocks due to Poghossian and to Fateev and Litvinov. At the rational central charge of a Virasoro minimal model Mp,p′M_{p,p'}, resonances (coincidences of Kac dimensions) make individual terms of these recursions singular, with poles that carry no null-vector meaning and cancel only in the sum. Javerzat, Santachiara and Foda (2018) introduced a correlated regularization of the internal dimension, the external dimensions and b2b^2, verified in examples (sphere levels up to 20) that the singular terms combine to finite contributions, worked out an explicit chain combinatorics for the torus character case with the total non-physical contribution CN(K)=(−1)K+1C_{N(K)}=(-1)^{K+1} checked numerically up to N∼300N\sim 300, and conjectured that the regularized recursions converge, as the regulator ϵ→0\epsilon\to 0, to the correct minimal-model blocks and characters. The problem is to establish this mathematically: an all-orders proof of the pole cancellation for arbitrary Kac labels, a compact classification of which singular terms combine, and an all-orders proof of the torus identity.

Background

Two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) are organized by the Virasoro algebra, the infinite-dimensional extension of the algebra of holomorphic transformations. In such a theory, correlation functions factorize into conformal blocks: universal functions of the field positions and of the conformal dimensions Δ\Delta (eigenvalues of the Virasoro generator L0L_0), multiplied by theory-dependent structure constants. The Virasoro minimal models Mp,p′M_{p,p'}, with coprime integers 0<p<p′0<p<p', are rational CFTs of central charge c=1−6(p′−p)2/(pp′)c=1-6(p'-p)^2/(pp') whose finitely many primary fields are labelled by Kac indices (m,n)(m,n) with 0<m<p0<m<p and 0<n<p′0<n<p', of conformal dimensions

Δm,n=(mp′−np)2−(p′−p)24pp′.\Delta_{m,n}=\frac{(mp'-np)^2-(p'-p)^2}{4pp'}.

Each such primary is degenerate: its Verma module (the module freely generated by the Virasoro raising operators) contains a null vector, a descendant state of zero norm that must be quotiented out, together with its descendants, to obtain the irreducible module. The minimal-model characters χm,n(q)=Tr qL0−c/24\chi_{m,n}(q)=\mathrm{Tr}\,q^{L_0-c/24} of these irreducible modules are among the most classical objects of the subject.

Two recursion relations compute such blocks at generic (non-rational) central charge. First, Zamolodchikov's elliptic recursion (1987): re-expanded in the elliptic nome qq (the standard invertible reparametrization of the cross-ratio xx, with q=x/16+O(x2)q=x/16+O(x^2)), a 4-point sphere block equals known theta-function and power-law prefactors times a series HsphH^{sph} obeying

Hsph(Δext,Δint,c,x)=1+∑rs>1Rr,ssph(Δext,c) (16q)rsΔint−Δr,s Hsph(Δext,Δr,−s,c,x),H^{sph}(\Delta^{ext},\Delta^{int},c,x)=1+\sum_{rs>1}\frac{R^{sph}_{r,s}(\Delta^{ext},c)\,(16q)^{rs}}{\Delta^{int}-\Delta_{r,s}}\,H^{sph}(\Delta^{ext},\Delta_{r,-s},c,x),

where Rr,ssphR^{sph}_{r,s} are explicitly known rational functions of the four external dimensions and of cc, and the Kac dimensions Δr,s\Delta_{r,s} are continued to all integer pairs (r,s)(r,s). Second, the 1-point torus conformal block F(Δext,Δint∣q)F(\Delta^{ext},\Delta^{int}|q), describing one field inserted on the torus with one representation flowing in the loop, obeys the analogous recursion of Poghossian (2009) and Fateev and Litvinov (2010), with an independent derivation by Hadasz, Jaskolski and Suchanek (2010): F=(q1/24/η(q)) HtorF=(q^{1/24}/\eta(q))\,H^{tor}, where η\eta is the Dedekind eta function and q1/24/η(q)=∑N≥0pNqNq^{1/24}/\eta(q)=\sum_{N\ge 0}p_N q^N is the free-boson Fock-space character, pNp_N the number of partitions of NN, with coefficients HNtorH^{tor}_N built from residues Rr,storR^{tor}_{r,s} over the same poles Δint=Δr,s\Delta^{int}=\Delta_{r,s}. When the inserted field is the identity (Δext→0\Delta^{ext}\to 0) and Δint=Δm,n\Delta^{int}=\Delta_{m,n}, this block reduces to the 0-point block, that is, the Virasoro character χm,n\chi_{m,n}.

The poles at Δint=Δr,s\Delta^{int}=\Delta_{r,s} in these recursions are physical: they encode degenerate internal fields and implement the minimal-model fusion rules (the selection rules for which primary fields can appear in operator products). At rational central charge, however, the Kac dimensions develop resonances, that is, coincidences Δm,n=Δm′,n′\Delta_{m,n}=\Delta_{m',n'} whenever mp′−np=±(m′p′−n′p)mp'-np=\pm(m'p'-n'p); for example, in the Ising model (c=1/2c=1/2), the pairs (2,−1)(2,-1) and (1,5)(1,5) label the same dimension. The denominators of the shifted terms Hr,−sH_{r,-s} then vanish on this locus, and the recursion, a sum of individually finite terms at generic cc, splits into terms that are individually singular. Such poles are called non-physical: they are artifacts of the recursion, unrelated to null vectors, and Javerzat, Santachiara and Foda (2018) observed that they cancel in the sum at each level of the qq-expansion.

To make this precise, those authors introduced a correlated regularization: Δint=Δm,n+ϵ\Delta^{int}=\Delta_{m,n}+\epsilon, external Δi=Δri,si+ϵi\Delta_i=\Delta_{r_i,s_i}+\epsilon_i with ϵi=O(ϵ)\epsilon_i=O(\epsilon), and b2=−p′/p+ϵ0b^2=-p'/p+\epsilon_0 with ϵ0=O(ϵ)\epsilon_0=O(\epsilon), where bb parametrizes the central charge via c=1+6Q2c=1+6Q^2 with Q=b+b−1Q=b+b^{-1}, followed by the limit ϵ→0\epsilon\to 0. On the sphere they verified in examples, two terms at level 7 (Ising) and five terms at level 20, that the singular terms combine to finite contributions, and conjectured that the limit exists and equals the correct minimal-model block; but they could not predict in closed form which singular terms combine. On the torus, in the identity-insertion limit, they derived explicit finite fractions for all non-vanishing non-physical pole contributions, uncovered a chain combinatorics (words in two types of arrows, 'U' and 'D', acting on the Kac table) of the type familiar from Coulomb-gas character constructions (the free-field representation of minimal-model characters), and checked numerically up to order N∼300N\sim 300 that the total non-physical contribution at level N(K)N(K) is CN(K)=(−1)K+1C_{N(K)}=(-1)^{K+1}, exactly the ±1\pm 1 that, inserted into the Fock-space character, quotients out the null states and produces the irreducible minimal-model character. Finally, they showed that the character limit depends on the regulator path: in the torus computation the three regulators are the external-insertion regulator ϵext\epsilon_{ext} (with αext=2ϵext\alpha^{ext}=2\epsilon_{ext}), the internal-dimension regulator ϵ\epsilon, and the central-charge regulator ϵc\epsilon_c, and the character limit requires the fine correlated path ϵ=ϵext\epsilon=\epsilon_{ext} and ϵc=4−pp′ ϵext\epsilon_c=\frac{4}{\sqrt{-pp'}}\,\epsilon_{ext} (their Eq. (57)), while other paths yield, for instance, plain Verma-module characters; by contrast, the sphere 4-point limit was found not to be sensitive to the choice of same-order path. No systematic classification of allowed paths was given. The problem is to turn these observations into theorems.

Problem Statement

Settle, at the full generality of arbitrary minimal models Mp,p′M_{p,p'} and arbitrary Kac labels, the conjecture of Javerzat, Santachiara and Foda (2018) on the minimal-model limits of the Zamolodchikov-type recursion relations, comprising three linked targets:

(1) All-orders pole cancellation on the sphere. Prove that, under the correlated regularization Δint=Δm,n+ϵ\Delta^{int}=\Delta_{m,n}+\epsilon, Δi=Δri,si+ϵi\Delta_i=\Delta_{r_i,s_i}+\epsilon_i with ϵi=O(ϵ)\epsilon_i=O(\epsilon), and b2=−p′/p+ϵ0b^2=-p'/p+\epsilon_0 with ϵ0=O(ϵ)\epsilon_0=O(\epsilon), every non-physical resonance pole in Zamolodchikov's elliptic recursion cancels at every order of the qq-expansion, for all external and internal Kac labels, and that the ϵ→0\epsilon\to 0 limit exists and equals the minimal-model 4-point sphere conformal block (equivalently, prove the conjecture stated in Sec. 3.5 of the source, of which the level-7 and level-20 cancellations are examples).

(2) Compact classification. Provide a closed-form combinatorial rule or formula that predicts, at any given level, which singular terms combine to give finite contributions, the sphere analogue of the explicit torus arrow-chain combinatorics.

(3) Torus character identity. Prove that, at all orders, the total non-physical pole contribution at level N(K)N(K) of the regularized torus recursion with identity insertion equals CN(K)=(−1)K+1C_{N(K)}=(-1)^{K+1} (Eq. (83) of the source), together with the analogous identities at every level, so that the ϵ→0\epsilon\to 0 limit equals the irreducible minimal-model character χm,n(q)\chi_{m,n}(q).

These components form one scientific objective, establishing the minimal-model limits of the Zamolodchikov-type recursions as well-defined and correct: component (2) is the constructive core of (1), and component (3) is its torus/character counterpart. All three components are jointly required: a complete resolution establishes them all, and a positive result on any single component alone does not resolve the task. A refutation by explicit counterexample within the stated scope (a minimal model, Kac labels, and a level at which the singular combination fails to be finite, or at which CN(K)≠(−1)K+1C_{N(K)}\ne(-1)^{K+1}) settles a component negatively and is admissible as such.
