The critical two-dimensional Ashkin–Teller (AT) model is the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 orbifold of the compactified free boson conformal field theory (CFT) at central charge c=1c=1. Nemkov and Ribault (SciPost Phys. 11, 089 (2021)) solved this model on the sphere at the level of Virasoro symmetry alone, computing fusion rules and structure constants of all Virasoro primary fields — including higher twist fields and degenerate fields — and proving crossing symmetry of their four-point functions. Their solution rests on a prescription (their Conjecture 2) for computing degenerate conformal blocks at rational central charge by continuing to generic central charge and then taking the limit. The authors explicitly left the completion of this program open: (i) at the special radius R=2R=2, where the AT model is expected to coincide with the 4-state Potts model, the S4S_4 permutation symmetry mixes the vertex, degenerate, and twist sectors, and the implied identities between structure constants and conformal blocks — needed to prove S4S_4 covariance of correlators and thereby claim a solution of the 4-state Potts model — remain to be worked out; (ii) the domain of validity of the central-charge-continuation prescription at rational central charges other than c=1c=1, notably in minimal models, is unestablished and its assumptions are probably too restrictive; (iii) whether closed-form expressions or stable recursive representations of degenerate blocks exist at other rational central charges is unknown; and (iv) no simple, solvable, non-diagonal continuation of the AT (Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-orbifold) CFT to generic central charge has been constructed, the continuation of the twist-field dimension being ambiguous. This problem asks for these four completions; none of the four is known to have been resolved.

Background

A two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) is a quantum field theory whose symmetry algebra is the infinite-dimensional Virasoro algebra, generated by modes LnL_n with central charge cc; a field is Virasoro primary if it is annihilated by all Ln>0L_{n>0}. Correlation functions factorize into channel sums of structure constants (three-point OPE coefficients) times conformal blocks, the chiral building blocks determined by Virasoro representation theory; requiring the channel expansions to agree ('crossing symmetry') overconstrains the theory and is the basis of the conformal bootstrap. The analytic conformal bootstrap, as developed by Nemkov and Ribault, determines structure constants exactly by solving the shift equations obtained from fusion kernels — the linear maps relating conformal-block bases in different channels.

The compactified free boson is the CFT of a periodic scalar field at c=1c=1; its primary fields are vertex operators VpV_p labeled by momenta that depend on a compactification radius RR, and it carries an affine (current) symmetry: an abelian u^(1)\widehat{u}(1) Lie algebra extending the Virasoro algebra. Affine Ward identities make its correlation functions nearly trivial. The Ashkin–Teller (AT) model — two coupled copies of the Ising model on the square lattice at criticality — is the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 orbifold of this theory: one quotients by the boson sign flip X↦−XX\mapsto -X. The quotient introduces twist fields TT (branch-point operators implementing the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 monodromy, of dimension 1/161/16), higher twist fields, and organizes the spectrum into vertex, degenerate, and twist sectors. Solving the AT model 'from the point of view of Virasoro symmetry' is strictly finer than the affine-level solution: one must also handle the infinite tower of Virasoro primary fields that are affine descendants, and their blocks.

A degenerate representation of the Virasoro algebra is a highest-weight representation containing a null vector (a state killed by all Ln>0L_{n>0}), labeled by Kac-table indices ⟨r,s⟩\langle r,s\rangle. Degenerate fields make four-point conformal blocks obey the Belavin–Polyakov–Zamolodchikov (BPZ) differential equations, whose finite order depends on the null vector. For generic (non-degenerate) channel fields, Zamolodchikov's recursive representation gives conformal blocks as a convergent series in a function of the cross-ratio; it becomes singular at rational values of the central charge. Nemkov and Ribault summarized how to treat degenerate blocks in two conjectures: at irrational cc, a degenerate block is the limit of generic blocks in the channel dimension (Conjecture 1); at rational c0c_0, it must instead be computed by continuing to generic cc — choosing a generic-cc degenerate representation R(c)\mathcal{R}^{(c)} with the same number of states at each level as the target representation R\mathcal{R}, and continuing the external dimensions accordingly — and then taking c→c0c\to c_0 (Conjecture 2). The AT solution also produced explicit results: structure constants built from Barnes' GG-function, degenerate c=1c=1 blocks (starting with the identity block) that are generalized theta functions — whereas Al. Zamolodchikov's simple explicit expression for the blocks appearing in four-twist correlation functions holds only in the non-degenerate case — and degenerate fusion kernels at c=1c=1. Earlier work (Javerzat–Santachiara–Foda 2018; Ribault 2019) had checked that the Zamolodchikov recursion has a finite limit as cc becomes rational but found no hint that the limit could be written explicitly.

The 4-state Potts model (a lattice spin model with four states per site) is expected to be described at criticality by the AT model at the special radius R=2R=2; its global symmetry is the symmetric group S4S_4 of permutations of the four states. At R=2R=2 the vertex-sector momenta p(n,w)=n+w4p_{(n,w)}=n+\frac{w}{4} become degenerate for even winding ww and coincide with twist-sector momenta for odd ww, so S4S_4 mixes the vertex, degenerate, and twist sectors, and it does not commute with the affine symmetry. Finally, the model's fate away from c=1c=1 involves the parametrization c=13−6β2−6β−2c=13-6\beta^2-6\beta^{-2}: the compactified free boson continues to generic cc with quantized radius (Ribault 2014), and the R=2R=2 model has the known QQ-state Potts continuation, but with a complicated spectrum and large multiplicities.

Problem Statement

Complete the exact-solvability program opened by Nemkov and Ribault's analytic-conformal-bootstrap solution of the Ashkin–Teller CFT (the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 orbifold of the compactified free boson at c=1c=1), by resolving the four questions the authors explicitly left open:

  1. The 4-state Potts point (S4S_4 completion). At the special radius R=2R=2, organize the Ashkin–Teller Virasoro primary fields into representations of the symmetric group S4S_4 and prove that correlation functions are covariant under S4S_4. This requires deriving the nontrivial identities between structure constants, and between conformal blocks, that are implied by the mixing of the vertex, degenerate, and twist sectors (where p(n,w)=n+w4p_{(n,w)}=n+\frac{w}{4} degenerates for even ww and coincides with twist momenta for odd ww). Delivering this settles whether the 4-state Potts model is solved as a CFT with its full global symmetry: organizing the fields into S4S_4 representations with covariant correlators establishes that claim, while a demonstration that the fields cannot be so organized refutes it.

  2. Domain of validity of the central-charge-continuation prescription. Determine for which rational central charges c0c_0 (in the source's convention, rationality means β2∈Q\beta^2\in\mathbb{Q} with c=13−6β2−6β−2c=13-6\beta^2-6\beta^{-2}) the prescription of Conjecture 2 holds — computing a degenerate block as

FR(c0∣(Δi)∣z)=lim⁡c→c0FR(c)(c∣(Δi(c))∣z)\mathcal{F}_{\mathcal{R}}(c_0|(\Delta_i)|z) = \lim_{c\to c_0}\mathcal{F}_{\mathcal{R}^{(c)}}(c|(\Delta_i^{(c)})|z)

with R(c)\mathcal{R}^{(c)} a generic-cc degenerate representation having the same number of states at each level as R\mathcal{R} — and relax or reformulate the conjecture where its assumptions (the existence of such a continuation R(c)\mathcal{R}^{(c)}) are too restrictive, notably for minimal models.

  1. Computability of degenerate blocks at other rational central charges. Determine whether closed-form expressions (generalizing the c=1c=1 generalized theta functions) or stable recursive representations of degenerate conformal blocks exist at rational central charges other than c=1c=1, and produce them or establish their impossibility.

  2. Continuation to generic central charge. Determine whether there exists a solvable, non-diagonal continuation of the Ashkin–Teller (Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-orbifold) CFT away from c=1c=1 — possibly one that preserves the affine symmetry, for instance by orbifolding the generic-cc compactified free boson with its quantized radius — and, if so, construct it; in particular, resolve the continuation of the twist-field dimension between the Potts-type value Δ(0,12)=8−4β2−3β−216\Delta_{(0,\frac12)}=\frac{8-4\beta^2-3\beta^{-2}}{16} and the geometric Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-twist value c16=13−6β2−6β−216\frac{c}{16}=\frac{13-6\beta^2-6\beta^{-2}}{16}, or show that no such continuation exists.

A resolution of this problem requires all four deliverables; no proper subset of them resolves it. They jointly complete the solvability structure of the model: item 1 finishes the solution at the 4-state Potts point; items 2 and 3 establish the degenerate-block machinery at rational central charge on which the solution method rests; item 4 extends the model itself beyond c=1c=1.
