The extended Q-system of Ekhammar, Shu and Volin packages the Baxter Q-functions of an integrable spin chain into Q-vectors taking values in every fundamental representation of the underlying simply-laced Lie algebra, equivalently into a fused flag that is a finite-difference oper; once its members are constrained by the analytic ansatz appropriate to rational, trigonometric, or elliptic chains, it is conjectured to encode the spectrum completely. The completeness conjecture states that the algebraic number of extended Q-systems satisfying the ansatz (i.e. the number of solutions of the algebraic system formed by the ansatz together with the Q-system relations, counted with algebraic multiplicity), counted modulo residual gauge symmetries, equals the dimension of the corresponding weight subspace of the Hilbert space; the faithfulness conjecture states that the resulting algebra of Q-functions is isomorphic to the Bethe algebra (the commuting transfer matrices) restricted to that subspace, which would imply a simple joint spectrum. The status of these conjectures is known precisely: they are proven for rational type-A chains (Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko; Chernyak-Leurent-Volin for gl(m|n)), are precisely formulated and numerically supported but unproven for the orthogonal family D_r (Ekhammar-Volin, 2025), and are untouched for E_6, E_7, E_8 and for the trigonometric and elliptic regimes. The problem is open.

Background

Integrable spin chains are quantum many-body systems whose infinite family of conserved charges commute and can be diagonalised simultaneously. In the algebraic Bethe ansatz these charges are organised into transfer matrices T(u)T(u), traces of monodromy matrices depending on a complex spectral parameter uu; the commutative algebra they generate is called the Bethe algebra of the chain. Baxter's Q-functions are special eigenvalue functions whose zeros (Bethe roots) determine the joint spectrum through functional relations such as TQTQ- and QQQQ-relations. For a chain based on a rank-rr Lie algebra g\mathfrak g, the standard (Cartan) QQQQ-system involves one Q-function per simple root. The extended Q-system of Ekhammar-Shu-Volin is a covariant enlargement: for every fundamental representation L(ωa)L(\omega_a), a=1,…,ra=1,\dots,r, of the Langlands-dual algebra (for simply-laced types, the algebra itself), it introduces a whole vector of Q-functions Q(a)\boldsymbol{Q}^{(a)} tied together by fusion, projection, and quantisation relations generalising the scalar QQQQ-relations. Geometrically the Q-vectors are Plücker coordinates of a complete flag, the relations say that these flags are fused with one another, and the paper identifies such a fused flag with a finite-difference oper - a discrete analogue of the oper connections of geometric Langlands theory, i.e. a connection valued in a Borel subalgebra - in a specific gauge. Structural theorems of the source show that, given generic functions Q1(a)Q^{(a)}_1, the Q-system on the Weyl orbit and then the full extended Q-system exist and are unique up to symmetry; the functional relations are universal for the Lie algebra and by themselves carry no physics.

The physical model is selected by an analytic Bethe ansatz imposed directly on the Q-functions (equations (4.9)-(4.14) of the source): each component Qi(a)(u)Q^{(a)}_i(u) must factorise into a normalisation constant, a character factor e2πu ωa(H)e^{2\pi u\,\omega_a(H)} fixed by the boundary twist HH (a Cartan element of g\mathfrak g defining the twisted boundary condition of the chain), a dressing factor σa(u)\sigma_a(u) fixed by the chain content (the Dynkin labels mℓam_{\ell a} of the representation at site ℓ\ell and the inhomogeneities θℓ\theta_\ell shifting the spectral parameter site by site), and a Baxter polynomial whose zeros are Bethe roots. In type AA this ansatz reduces to the Wronskian Bethe equations, a determinant form of the nested Bethe equations. The rational regime corresponds to Yangian symmetry (XXX-type chains), the trigonometric regime to quantum affine algebra symmetry (XXZ-type chains), and the elliptic regime to elliptic quantum groups; a fundamental-representation node means each site carries the lift of an irreducible representation whose highest weight is a fundamental weight ωa\omega_a, its content encoded in Drinfeld polynomials Pa(u)P_a(u) - the polynomials whose zeros encode the evaluation parameters and highest-weight data of a Yangian representation.

Two statements then express that solving the constrained Q-system is equivalent to diagonalising the chain. Completeness: the algebraic number of extended Q-systems satisfying the ansatz, counted modulo residual symmetries (for a generic twist HH only the action of the Cartan subalgebra h⊂g\mathfrak h\subset\mathfrak g, which changes normalisations and is therefore inessential, is a symmetry, while for zero twist H=0H=0 rotation by any element of g\mathfrak g is a symmetry), equals the dimension dλd_\lambda of the weight subspace, i.e. the space of highest-weight vectors with respect to the residual symmetry (for a generic twist, simply the space of vectors of weight λ\lambda) with Dynkin labels da=∑ℓmℓa−∑bCabMbd_a=\sum_\ell m_{\ell a}-\sum_b C_{ab}M_b, where CC is the Cartan matrix and MbM_b the number of Bethe roots of type bb. Faithfulness: the algebra of Q-functions obeying the ansatz and the extended Q-system relations - in the rational and trigonometric cases a polynomial quotient ring in the Baxter-polynomial coefficients - is isomorphic to the Bethe algebra restricted to the weight subspace; under this isomorphism, completeness is equivalent to the Bethe algebra being a maximal commutative algebra of endomorphisms of the subspace and the joint spectrum being simple. For rational glN\mathfrak{gl}_N chains with vector-representation nodes this programme is a theorem: Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko identified the Bethe algebra on a weight subspace with the algebra of functions on a fibre of a discrete Wronski map, and Chernyak-Leurent-Volin proved completeness of Wronskian Bethe equations for rational glm∣n\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n} chains. For the orthogonal family, Ferrando-Frassek-Kazakov derived the full DrD_r QQ-system together with Weyl-type transfer-matrix formulas, and Frassek constructed oscillator Lax operators realising part of an operatorial Q-system for the DD-type Yangian - ingredients toward, but not a proof of, the conjecture. Ekhammar-Shu-Volin pose the completeness and faithfulness conjectures for all simply-laced g\mathfrak g in all three regimes, and their sequel (Ekhammar-Volin, published 2025) makes the conjecture precise for cyclic representations of the Yangian Y(so2r)Y(\mathfrak{so}_{2r}) and tests it extensively numerically; no proof beyond type A exists.

Problem Statement

Prove or refute the completeness and faithfulness conjectures of Ekhammar-Shu-Volin (arXiv:2008.10597, Section 4.3) for the analytically constrained extended Q-system. Consider spin chains whose symmetry is a simply-laced Lie algebra g\mathfrak g of rank rr - the open cases are the orthogonal family DrD_r and the exceptional types E6E_6, E7E_7, E8E_8, the type-AA rational chains with vector-representation nodes being the settled benchmark - with chain sites carrying fundamental representations of the Yangian (rational regime), of the quantum affine algebra (trigonometric regime), or of the elliptic quantum group (elliptic regime), with arbitrary inhomogeneities θℓ\theta_\ell and twist HH (a Cartan element fixing the boundary condition), and with Hilbert space the tensor product of the site representations. Let dλd_\lambda be the dimension of the weight subspace, the space of highest-weight vectors with respect to the residual symmetry (for a generic twist, the space of vectors of weight λ\lambda), with Dynkin labels da=∑ℓmℓa−∑bCabMbd_a=\sum_\ell m_{\ell a}-\sum_b C_{ab}M_b (CC the Cartan matrix, MbM_b the Bethe-root numbers, mℓam_{\ell a} the Dynkin labels of the site representations).

(i) Faithfulness: prove or disprove that the algebra of Q-functions satisfying the analytic ansatz (equations (4.9)-(4.14) of the source) together with the relations of the extended Q-system is isomorphic to the Bethe algebra generated by the transfer matrices, restricted to this weight subspace.

(ii) Completeness: prove or disprove that the algebraic number of extended Q-systems satisfying the ansatz, counted modulo the residual symmetries (for a generic twist only the action of the Cartan subalgebra h⊂g\mathfrak h\subset\mathfrak g, and for zero twist H=0H=0 rotation by any element of g\mathfrak g), equals dλd_\lambda.

Consequently, prove or disprove that the Bethe algebra has simple joint spectrum on the weight subspace (the implication asserted in the source for the rational and trigonometric cases). The independently refutable claims are (i) and (ii), and a counterexample to either refutes that claim alone while leaving the other open; the simple-spectrum statement is not a separate target, since it follows from (i) and (ii) and need not be established on its own. The conjecture asserts these properties always, not merely for parameters in general position: configurations with coinciding Bethe roots, homogeneous chains, exceptional solutions in which both terms of a Wronskian determinant vanish simultaneously, and site representations that are irreducible as modules over the quantum algebra but reducible as representations of the Lie algebra g\mathfrak g must be covered by a proof (or may be exploited by a counterexample); in the proved type-AA benchmark the source requires only that the chain be a cyclic representation of the Yangian. The full target comprises all simply-laced types and all three regimes; the sharpest currently formulated subcase is rational so2r\mathfrak{so}_{2r} chains with fundamental-representation nodes as conjectured by Ekhammar-Volin (2025).
