The spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain at root-of-unity anisotropy η=iπℓ1/ℓ2\eta=\mathrm{i}\pi\ell_1/\ell_2 is exactly solvable, yet its spectrum there is only partially understood: six-vertex transfer-matrix eigenvalues come in exponentially large degenerate blocks organized by Fabricius–McCoy (FM) strings and 'descendant towers'. Miao, Lamers and Pasquier (SciPost Phys. 11, 067 (2021)) constructed the truncated Baxter Q operator at roots of unity, proved the associated truncated fusion and Wronskian relations, and left the structural core as conjectures: derivatives of semicyclic transfer matrices create and annihilate FM strings (Conjectures 1–4, supported by numerics only), the imaginary parts of FM-string centres take fixed values at commensurate twist (Conjecture 5), and an unidentified algebraic symmetry 'compatible with the Q operator' should make primitive ('highest-weight') and descendant states intrinsic, with rigorous Bethe/Q completeness and the thermodynamic-Bethe-ansatz role of FM strings left open. Rational Q-systems, non-commuting transfer matrices and affine Temperley–Lieb arguments have addressed parts of this picture, but the creation-operator conjectures, the Q-operator-compatible symmetry algebra, a rigorous completeness proof, and the derivation of FM-string thermodynamics all remain open. The problem asks for this missing algebraic and thermodynamic completion.

Background

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain is the paradigmatic quantum integrable model: a one-dimensional lattice of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom with Hamiltonian

H=∑j=1N(σjxσj+1x+σjyσj+1y+Δ σjzσj+1z),Δ=cosh⁡η,H=\sum_{j=1}^{N}\left(\sigma^x_j\sigma^x_{j+1}+\sigma^y_j\sigma^y_{j+1}+\Delta\,\sigma^z_j\sigma^z_{j+1}\right),\qquad\Delta=\cosh\eta,

with twisted boundary conditions, where σjx,y,z\sigma^{x,y,z}_j are Pauli matrices. It is solved by the Bethe ansatz: eigenstates are parametrized by Bethe roots umu_m satisfying algebraic Bethe equations, and the conserved charges are generated by the commuting family of six-vertex transfer matrices Ts(u)T_s(u) (row-to-row transfer matrices of the six-vertex statistical model, with spectral parameter uu and auxiliary spin ss); the Hamiltonian is obtained from the fundamental transfer matrix by a logarithmic derivative, up to rescaling and an additive constant. Baxter's Q operator is an operator commuting with all Ts(u)T_s(u) whose eigenvalues are polynomials whose zeros are exactly the Bethe roots; it underlies the functional TQTQ relation (the identity linking the eigenvalues of TT and QQ that encodes the Bethe equations) and is the deepest layer of the solution.

When η\eta is a root of unity, η=iπ ℓ1/ℓ2\eta=\mathrm{i}\pi\,\ell_1/\ell_2 with ℓ1,ℓ2\ell_1,\ell_2 coprime (equivalently q=eηq=e^{\eta} with q2ℓ2=1q^{2\ell_2}=1), the spectrum develops a singular structure that is still not fully understood. Transfer-matrix eigenvalues then appear in exponentially large degenerate blocks. The degenerate partners form 'descendant towers': a lowest member, called the primitive state, together with all states obtained from it by adjoining Fabricius–McCoy (FM) strings — bound states of exactly ℓ2\ell_2 Bethe roots u0+iπ(n−1)/ℓ2u_0+\mathrm{i}\pi(n-1)/\ell_2, n=1,…,ℓ2n=1,\ldots,\ell_2, with zero string deviation, which scatter trivially off all other roots and carry no local charge generated by the fundamental transfer matrix T1/2(u)T_{1/2}(u) (apart from a possible momentum π\pi), although they do carry the quasilocal Z charges. Two symmetry structures are known to be involved, and both fall short. The sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2 loop algebra (the Lie algebra of polynomial maps into sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2) commutes with the transfer matrices but acts only on part of the Hilbert space and does not commute with the Q operator, so its highest-weight and descendant notions do not reproduce the observed towers. The quasilocal Z charges — conserved charges that are sums of local densities with exponentially decaying overlap (quasilocality), existing only at roots of unity, which explain the non-vanishing high-temperature spin Drude weight (the zero-frequency ballistic part of the spin-transport conductivity) and are generated by transfer matrices built from semicyclic (non-highest-weight, cyclic up to one matrix entry) auxiliary representations — control the thermodynamics through string-charge duality, the bijection between Bethe-string densities and conserved-charge eigenvalues that underlies generalized hydrodynamics (the exact macroscopic theory of integrable systems built on their infinitely many conserved charges); but their operator relation to the degeneracies was unclear.

Miao, Lamers and Pasquier (2021) constructed the Q operator at arbitrary anisotropy from a two-parameter transfer matrix with a complex-spin auxiliary space, and showed that at roots of unity a truncation makes the Q operator an explicit finite-dimensional trace over the auxiliary space. This yielded proofs of the truncated fusion and Wronskian relations (functional relations between the Q and P eigenvalue polynomials), a proof of a previously conjectured interpolation formula, the quantization condition identifying FM-string centres with zeros of the product of the regular parts of the Q and P eigenvalues (the Drinfeld polynomial of the earlier loop-algebra literature, i.e. the polynomial characterising the highest-weight representations of that loop algebra), and the picture of FM strings behaving like free fermions within each descendant tower. The operator content nevertheless remained conjectural. Conjectures 1–4 assert that the linearization of the semicyclic transfer matrix in its cyclic parameter at auxiliary spin s=(ℓ2−1)/2s=(\ell_2-1)/2,

BFM(u)=∂β Tssc(u,ϕ,β)∣β=0,\mathbf{B}^{\mathrm{FM}}(u)=\left.\partial_\beta\,\mathbf{T}^{\mathrm{sc}}_s(u,\phi,\beta)\right|_{\beta=0},

creates an FM string on any eigenstate of the Q operator, with an analogous operator CFM(u)\mathbf{C}^{\mathrm{FM}}(u) annihilating one; these were verified only in numerical examples, and the commutation relations of these operators away from eigenstates ('off shell') are unknown. (An earlier creation operator proposed by Fabricius and McCoy yields, in the examples checked, eigenvectors of HH and of the fundamental transfer matrix, but not of the Q operator.) Conjecture 5 asserts that at commensurate twist — when the boundary phase is tuned so that FM strings solve the Bethe equations — FM-string centres have imaginary part π/(2ℓ2)\pi/(2\ell_2) for odd ℓ1\ell_1 and 00 for even ℓ1\ell_1. The authors singled out the central open question: a deeper algebraic structure compatible with the Q operator, which would make the terms 'highest-weight' and 'descendant' intrinsic — conjecturally an Onsager algebra, the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra with generators AmA_m, GlG_l obeying [Al,Am]=4Gl−m[A_l,A_m]=4G_{l-m}, [Gl,Am]=2Al+m−2Am−l[G_l,A_m]=2A_{l+m}-2A_{m-l}, [Gl,Gm]=0[G_l,G_m]=0, introduced in Onsager's solution of the two-dimensional Ising model — together with a rigorous proof of completeness of the Bethe/Q description at roots of unity and a derivation of the FM-string contributions within the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA), the finite-temperature formalism that encodes thermodynamics in the densities of Bethe strings in Takahashi's classification, whose 'last two' string types are special at roots of unity.

Since 2021 the finite-size picture has advanced considerably — an algorithmic determination of all physical solutions and exact FM-string centres (Hou–Jiang–Miao), explicit Onsager generators from a quadratic algebra of non-commuting transfer matrices (Vernier–Miao–Yamazaki), and rigorous degeneracy bounds from the representation theory of the affine Temperley–Lieb algebra (the diagrammatic algebra underlying the XXZ chain; Hu–Gerken–Posske) — yet none of these proves the conjectured creation/annihilation operators, identifies the algebra compatible with the Q operator, proves completeness rigorously, or derives the FM-string thermodynamics. That missing algebraic and thermodynamic completion is the open core of the problem.

Problem Statement

Objective: replace the numerically supported, partly conjectural picture of the root-of-unity spectrum of the periodic spin-1/2 XXZ chain by a proven algebraic theory, and establish its thermodynamic consequences. The setting is the twisted periodic spin-1/2 XXZ chain at anisotropy η=iπ ℓ1/ℓ2\eta=\mathrm{i}\pi\,\ell_1/\ell_2 (with ℓ1,ℓ2\ell_1,\ell_2 coprime; commensurate twist means the boundary phase ϕ\phi is tuned so that FM strings solve the Bethe equations), where the six-vertex transfer matrix and the truncated Baxter Q operator of Miao, Lamers and Pasquier exhibit exponentially degenerate spectra organized by Fabricius–McCoy (FM) strings and descendant towers. Four linked deliverables — all understood for all roots of unity, in both sign sectors ε=qℓ2=±1\varepsilon=q^{\ell_2}=\pm1, and for all commensurate twists — jointly constitute the resolution.

(1) Operator algebra. Prove Conjectures 1–4 of the source paper: the semicyclic-transfer-matrix derivatives

BFM(u)=∂β Tssc(u,ϕ,β)∣β=0,  2s=ℓ2−1\mathbf{B}^{\mathrm{FM}}(u)=\left.\partial_\beta\,\mathbf{T}^{\mathrm{sc}}_s(u,\phi,\beta)\right|_{\beta=0,\;2s=\ell_2-1}

and their transposed-Lax twins CFM(u)=∂γ T^ssc(u,ϕ,γ)∣γ=0,  2s=ℓ2−1\mathbf{C}^{\mathrm{FM}}(u)=\left.\partial_\gamma\,\widehat{\mathbf{T}}^{\mathrm{sc}}_s(u,\phi,\gamma)\right|_{\gamma=0,\;2s=\ell_2-1} (the semicyclic transfer matrix built from the transposed Lax operator, whose cyclic parameter γ\gamma deforms the auxiliary matrix entry as S−↦S−+γ ∣ℓ2−1⟩⟨0∣\mathbf{S}^-\mapsto\mathbf{S}^-+\gamma\,|\ell_2-1\rangle\langle 0|) create and annihilate FM strings {u+δε, u+δε+iπ/ℓ2, …, u+δε+iπ(ℓ2−1)/ℓ2}\{u+\delta_\varepsilon,\,u+\delta_\varepsilon+\mathrm{i}\pi/\ell_2,\,\ldots,\,u+\delta_\varepsilon+\mathrm{i}\pi(\ell_2-1)/\ell_2\} on eigenstates of the truncated Q operator — where uu is the operator's spectral parameter and, following the convention of Conjectures 3–4, δε=0\delta_\varepsilon=0 for ε=+1\varepsilon=+1 while δε=iπ/(2ℓ2)\delta_\varepsilon=\mathrm{i}\pi/(2\ell_2) for ε=−1\varepsilon=-1 — and determine the off-shell (non-eigenstate) commutation relations of these operators.

(2) Intrinsic symmetry. Identify the deeper algebraic structure compatible with the Q operator — the structure whose representation theory organizes the degenerate spectrum so that the labels 'primitive' (highest-weight) and 'descendant' become intrinsic — and establish its relation to the Onsager algebra and to the semicyclic transfer matrices.

(3) Completeness. Building on (1)–(2) or independently, prove completeness of the Bethe/Q-operator description at roots of unity: a rigorous classification of all eigenstates of the twisted periodic chain into primitive states and descendant towers — including degenerate primitive states, Bethe roots sent to u=±∞u=\pm\infty (which drop out of the Bethe equations), and all parameter-dependent exceptional cases — whose counting matches the Hilbert-space dimension in every magnetization sector.

(4) Thermodynamics. Derive the FM-string contributions within the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, their precise relation to the quasilocal Z charges and string-charge duality for arbitrary roots of unity and commensurate twists, and prove that the finite-size FM-string picture yields the correct thermodynamic root densities (including the last two Takahashi string types).

These deliverables form one scientific objective: (1) supplies the operator algebra, (2) its representation-theoretic meaning, (3) the resulting finite-size spectral classification, and (4) its thermodynamic limit. The route is not prescribed: any rigorous construction with the stated proved content — for instance via cyclic-representation Q operators or the non-commuting transfer-matrix algebra — is admissible, provided it covers the stated generality rather than special points or fixed system sizes.
