The off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA) exactly solved the anisotropic spin-1/2 chains with arbitrary boundary fields — open XXZ and XYZ chains with generic non-diagonal boundary magnetic fields, which break the U(1) spin-rotation symmetry required by the conventional Bethe ansatz — by deriving inhomogeneous T-Q relations whose pole-cancellation conditions give Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs). The source work verified completeness, i.e. that the BAEs reproduce all 2N2^N transfer-matrix eigenvalues, only numerically, for the XXZ chain at N=3,4N=3,4. In the subsequent literature the XXZ/XXX (six-vertex) case was proven complete in 2014-2015 by separation-of-variables methods and by a Bezout-counting argument, and the model extensions and thermodynamic-limit program posed by the source work have been substantially carried out. The surviving open core is the eight-vertex case: a rigorous completeness and soundness proof (or refutation) of the ODBA Bethe equations for the open XYZ chain with generic non-diagonal boundary fields, for both parities of the chain length and including the homogeneous limit, together with a criterion separating physical from spurious solutions. Literature of 2025-2026 explicitly states that a complete description of the general open XYZ transfer-matrix spectrum in terms of Q-function solutions of a homogeneous T-Q equation is still unknown, and no completeness or soundness proof of the ODBA Bethe equations for the XYZ chain exists.

Background

Integrable quantum spin chains are lattice models whose dynamics is generated by a one-parameter family of mutually commuting transfer matrices. The transfer matrix is built from an RR-matrix — a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation that guarantees the factorized consistency of scattering — and, for open (finite) chains, from boundary matrices (KK-matrices) satisfying Sklyanin's reflection equation, which encodes integrability-compatible boundary conditions (Sklyanin 1988). The spin-1/2 XXZ chain (the anisotropic Heisenberg chain with anisotropy Δ=cos⁡η\Delta=\cos\eta, where η\eta is the crossing parameter) and the fully anisotropic XYZ chain with such boundary fields have Hamiltonians that commute with the transfer matrix, so the transfer-matrix spectrum encodes the full set of conserved quantities. Generic integrable boundary fields are non-diagonal in the SzS^z basis and depend on six boundary parameters: in the trigonometric (XXZ) case these are the parameters α±\alpha_\pm, β±\beta_\pm, θ±\theta_\pm of the source work, whereas in the elliptic (XYZ) case the source's KK-matrices (its equations (5.1)-(5.3)) are parametrized by αl(−)\alpha_l^{(-)} and αl(+)\alpha_l^{(+)}, l=1,2,3l=1,2,3 (the symbol θj\theta_j is reserved there for the inhomogeneity parameters).

The central difficulty is that the conventional algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA) — the standard exact-solution method, which builds eigenstates from a reference state (a 'local vacuum' such as all spins up, annihilated by the off-diagonal entries of the monodromy matrix) — fails for generic non-diagonal boundary fields: they break the U(1) symmetry of conservation of total SzS^z, and no reference state exists. Between Sklyanin's 1988 construction and 2013, exact solutions were known only when the boundary parameters satisfy a constraint (a Nepomechie-type condition relating the six boundary parameters), under which a modified Bethe ansatz works and its completeness was verified numerically (Nepomechie and Ravanini 2003).

The off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA), introduced by Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang, circumvents the reference state: it uses only functional relations satisfied by every transfer-matrix eigenvalue Λ(u)\Lambda(u) — operator identities at the inhomogeneity points θj\theta_j (auxiliary site-dependent offsets of the spectral parameter, a standard technical device), of the type Λ(θj)Λ(θj−η)=Δq(θj)\Lambda(\theta_j)\Lambda(\theta_j-\eta)=\Delta_q(\theta_j) where Δq\Delta_q is the quantum determinant (a known scalar function), together with the asymptotics (XXZ) or quasi-periodicity (XYZ) of Λ(u)\Lambda(u). These imply a generalized (inhomogeneous) T-Q relation: a functional equation expressing Λ(u)\Lambda(u) through an auxiliary polynomial Q(u)Q(u) — Baxter's Q-function, whose zeros are the Bethe roots — plus an extra off-diagonal term proportional to 1/Q(u)1/Q(u) with no analogue when U(1) symmetry is present. Requiring the right-hand side to be pole-free yields the Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs) for the roots; for open chains the BAEs differ structurally for even and odd chain length NN. With this method the source work exactly solved the open XXZ and XYZ chains with arbitrary boundary fields (Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang 2013, arXiv:1307.2023), following the isotropic XXX case (Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang 2013, arXiv:1306.1742); the XYZ solution was further elaborated by Cao, Cui, Yang, Shi and Wang (2014, arXiv:1307.0280).

Completeness is the foundational question for any Bethe-ansatz solution: the Hilbert space of NN spin-1/2 sites has dimension 2N2^N, the scheme is complete if BAE solutions reproduce all 2N2^N transfer-matrix eigenvalues, and sound if every BAE solution is physical (yields a true eigenvalue). For periodic six- and eight-vertex models completeness was proven by Baxter (2002). For open chains with non-diagonal boundary fields the analogous statement long remained unproven; the source work verified it numerically for the XXZ chain at N=3,4N=3,4 only, and left open (i) a rigorous completeness proof for arbitrary NN, (ii) the classification of admissible T-Q parametrizations, (iii) extensions to higher spin and other algebras, and (iv) the thermodynamic limit.

Substantial progress followed for the six-vertex (XXZ/XXX) case: a Bezout-counting proof that the inhomogeneous T-Q functional relations completely characterize the spectrum for generic non-diagonal boundary matrices, both parities of NN, the homogeneous chain and the spin-ss generalization (Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang 2015); and a separation-of-variables (SoV) program — Sklyanin's method representing the transfer matrix in a basis where it acts diagonally — proving completeness of an inhomogeneous Baxter T-Q equation for generic inhomogeneous open XXZ chains with the most general boundaries (Faldella, Kitanine and Niccoli 2014; Kitanine, Maillet and Niccoli 2014; Maillet and Niccoli 2019). In sharp contrast, the eight-vertex (XYZ) case with generic boundary fields remains without any completeness proof of the ODBA Bethe equations: Niccoli and Terras (2025) solve the open XYZ chain with arbitrary boundary fields by the new SoV approach and, at generic inhomogeneities, characterize the full transfer-matrix spectrum by an inhomogeneous system of NN quadratic equations, but a description of the spectrum in terms of Q-function solutions of a T-Q equation is obtained only under a boundary-parameter constraint, and they state explicitly that a complete description of the general open XYZ transfer-matrix spectrum in terms of Q-function solutions of a homogeneous T-Q equation is still unknown; and the recently developed rational Q-system / Wronskian Bethe-equation techniques — a reformulation of the BAEs as polynomial recursion relations whose solutions are automatically physical — exist only for six-vertex-type models, with both their completeness proof and their extension to XYZ explicitly listed as open (Jiang, Liu, Miao and Tan 2026).

Problem Statement

The problem, in the form posed by the source work and surviving the later literature, is the completeness and soundness of the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz solution of the anisotropic spin-1/2 chains with arbitrary boundary fields. The completeness of the open XXZ/XXX (six-vertex) case is settled in substance (see previous progress), although the soundness of its BAEs — the exclusion of 'unphysical' solutions — and the treatment of degenerate spectra remain open even there; the unresolved target of this statement is the eight-vertex case, in two linked parts.

(1) Completeness for the open XYZ chain with generic boundary fields. Prove — or refute by an explicit finite counterexample — that the inhomogeneous T-Q relations (equations (5.33) and (5.39) of Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang, arXiv:1307.2023) together with their Bethe ansatz equations ((5.36)-(5.37) for even NN, (5.42)-(5.43) for odd NN), taken with the prescribed number of Bethe roots, account for the full set of 2N2^N transfer-matrix eigenvalues, counted with multiplicity: every eigenvalue is obtained from at least one solution (completeness). Injectivity of the solution-to-eigenvalue map is not part of the criterion: distinct solutions or parametrizations may correspond to the same eigenvalue, as already happens in the six-vertex case, where infinitely many equivalent T-Q parametrizations of a given eigenvalue are known. The statement must cover both parities of the chain length NN, generic values of the six elliptic boundary parameters αl(±)\alpha_l^{(\pm)} (l=1,2,3l=1,2,3) and of the anisotropy (the elliptic modulus or half-period ratio), the homogeneous limit, and must either include or explicitly delimit the degenerate hyperplanes of boundary-parameter space (in particular the constraint loci ∑σ=±∑i=13ϵiσαi(σ)=(N−2M−1)η\sum_{\sigma=\pm}\sum_{i=1}^{3}\epsilon_i^{\sigma}\alpha_i^{(\sigma)}=(N-2M-1)\eta (with signs ϵiσ∈{±1}\epsilon_i^{\sigma}\in\{\pm1\} satisfying ∏σ,iϵiσ=1\prod_{\sigma,i}\epsilon_i^{\sigma}=1, and M∈{0,…,N}M\in\{0,\dots,N\} the integer degree parameter of the factorized Q-function), where Q-function solutions of a homogeneous T-Q equation and other solution methods exist).

(2) Soundness and physicality criterion. Prove — or refute by an explicit finite counterexample — that every solution of the inhomogeneous BAEs, taken with the prescribed number of Bethe roots, yields a transfer-matrix eigenvalue (soundness); if spurious solutions exist, give a criterion distinguishing the physical solutions of these equations from them. This component is unresolved even for the six-vertex case, whose completeness proof explicitly allows that not all T-Q relations built from BAE solutions need correspond to right eigenvalues because the BAEs may admit 'unphysical' solutions (Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang 2015, footnote to Proposition 2); in the elliptic case no such criterion exists at all. The relations among the different inhomogeneous T-Q parametrizations used in the source work and its successors (different root numbers and zero-root patterns) remain relevant background for formulating such a criterion, but a full classification theorem for admissible parametrizations is not part of the target: in the six-vertex case all parametrizations of a given eigenvalue are known to be equivalent.

The common scientific objective of the two deliverables is to establish the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz as a complete and sound exact solution of the anisotropic spin-1/2 chains with arbitrary boundary fields — the last unsolved flagship case being the eight-vertex chain with U(1)-breaking boundaries — rather than a formally derived but unverified spectral characterization.
