For a finite-dimensional simple complex Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g}, the universal RR-matrix of the Yangian double DYℏg\mathrm{D}Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g} — equivalently Drinfeld's universal RR-matrix R(s)\mathcal{R}(s) of the Yangian YℏgY_\hbar\mathfrak{g} — admits a Gauss decomposition R(s)=R+(s)R0(s)R−(s)\mathcal{R}(s)=\mathcal{R}^+(s)\mathcal{R}^0(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) whose abelian factor R0(s)\mathcal{R}^0(s) is explicit and whose unitriangular factors R±(s)\mathcal{R}^\pm(s) are characterized by intertwining recurrence relations or as canonical elements of a pairing. Beyond g=sl2\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2, however, no explicit closed-form expression for R±(s)\mathcal{R}^\pm(s) is known. The infinite-product formula proposed by Khoroshkin and Tolstoy in 1996 was disproved for g≇sl2\mathfrak{g}\not\cong\mathfrak{sl}_2 by a no-go theorem of Appel–Gautam–Wendlandt (published 2023), which rules out any factorization of R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) as an ordered product, over the positive roots of g\mathfrak{g}, of factors supported on multiples of a single root. The surviving problem — explicitly described in the recent literature as open and challenging — is to determine whether R±(s)\mathcal{R}^\pm(s) admits any explicit closed-form expression for higher rank (for instance a Damiani-type ordered product over the affine root set with an interval-finite ordering, analogous to the established factorization for quantum affine algebras), and to produce it if so. A secondary question from the same source asks whether the formal completion of the specialized Yangian double DYζg\mathbb{D}Y_\zeta\mathfrak{g} with respect to its Z\mathbb{Z}-filtration is the restricted quantum double of the specialized Yangian Yζ(g)Y_\zeta(\mathfrak{g}) over C\mathbb{C}.

Background

The Yangian YℏgY_\hbar\mathfrak{g} of a finite-dimensional simple complex Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g}, introduced by V. Drinfeld in the 1980s in connection with the quantum Yang–Baxter equation, is the Hopf algebra over the ring of formal power series C[ ⁣[ℏ] ⁣]\mathbb{C}[\![\hbar]\!] that quantizes the universal enveloping algebra of the current algebra g[t]\mathfrak{g}[t] (the Lie algebra of g\mathfrak{g}-valued polynomials in one variable); it is the rational counterpart of the trigonometric quantum loop algebras Uq(Lg)U_q(L\mathfrak{g}). In Drinfeld's presentation it is topologically generated by elements xi,r±x_{i,r}^{\pm} and hi,rh_{i,r}, indexed by the simple roots of g\mathfrak{g} and integers r≥0r\geq0, assembled into currents obeying relations that deform those of g[t]\mathfrak{g}[t]. A Hopf algebra is called quasitriangular when it carries a universal RR-matrix: an invertible element R\mathcal{R} in a completion of H⊗HH\otimes H satisfying the quantum Yang–Baxter equation R12R13R23=R23R13R12\mathcal{R}_{12}\mathcal{R}_{13}\mathcal{R}_{23}=\mathcal{R}_{23}\mathcal{R}_{13}\mathcal{R}_{12} (with Rij\mathcal{R}_{ij} denoting R\mathcal{R} acting on the ii-th and jj-th tensor factors) and intertwining the coproduct with its opposite. Evaluating R\mathcal{R} on representations produces the solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation that govern rational integrable spin chains.

The Yangian double DYℏg\mathrm{D}Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g}, introduced by S. Khoroshkin and V. Tolstoy in 1996, is obtained by doubling the generators of the Yangian so that the mode index rr ranges over all of Z\mathbb{Z}; it contains YℏgY_\hbar\mathfrak{g} and a dual half. Drinfeld's quantum double construction produces, from a Hopf algebra paired with its dual, a quasitriangular Hopf algebra whose universal RR-matrix is the canonical element of the pairing (the sum, over a basis, of basis elements tensored with dual basis elements). Khoroshkin–Tolstoy conjectured that DYℏg\mathrm{D}Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g} realizes the quantum double of the Yangian, the prefix 'restricted' indicating that all duality operations respect the natural Z\mathbb{Z}-grading (graded duals). C. Wendlandt proved this conjecture over C[ ⁣[ℏ] ⁣]\mathbb{C}[\![\hbar]\!]: DYℏg\mathrm{D}Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g} is isomorphic to the restricted quantum double of YℏgY_\hbar\mathfrak{g}, and the universal RR-matrix R\boldsymbol{R} of the double, which is the canonical element of the pairing between the Yangian and its restricted dual, is transported to Drinfeld's universal RR-matrix R(s)∈(Yℏg⊗Yℏg)[ ⁣[s−1] ⁣]\mathcal{R}(s)\in(Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g}\otimes Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g})[\![s^{-1}]\!] by the formal shift operator Φz\Phi_z, a graded embedding of the double into Yℏg[ ⁣[z±1] ⁣]Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g}[\![z^{\pm1}]\!], via (Φw⊗Φz)(R)=R(w−z)(\Phi_w\otimes\Phi_z)(\boldsymbol{R})=\mathcal{R}(w-z).

The series R(s)\mathcal{R}(s) admits a formal Gauss (triangular) decomposition R(s)=R+(s)R0(s)R−(s)\mathcal{R}(s)=\mathcal{R}^+(s)\mathcal{R}^0(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) into an abelian (Cartan) factor and two unitriangular factors (triangular with respect to the root-grading, with constant term 11) with R+(s)=R21−(−s)−1\mathcal{R}^+(s)=\mathcal{R}^-_{21}(-s)^{-1}. The abelian factor R0(s)\mathcal{R}^0(s) is explicitly known, obtained by S. Gautam and V. Toledano Laredo — in the constructive form used here with C. Wendlandt — as the common asymptotic expansion of meromorphic abelian RR-matrices. The factor R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) is uniquely characterized in two equivalent ways: as the unipotent, zero-weight solution of an intertwining equation (equivalently, the recurrence relations (3.18) of Wendlandt's paper) on the negative and positive halves of the Yangian, and as the canonical element of the pairing between the negative half of the double and its restricted dual. Each weight-graded block Rβ−(s)\mathcal{R}^-_\beta(s) is divisible by s−ν(β)s^{-\nu(\beta)}, where ν(β)\nu(\beta) is the minimal number of positive roots summing to β\beta. For g=sl2\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2 there are two closed-form expressions for R±(s)\mathcal{R}^{\pm}(s) (Khoroshkin–Tolstoy; Gautam–Toledano Laredo–Wendlandt); for every g\mathfrak{g} of rank at least 22, no explicit expression is known.

Khoroshkin–Tolstoy proposed, generalizing their sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2 theorem, an infinite-product formula (their equation (5.43)): R−=∏β∈Σ−<exp⁡(−ℏ Ωβ)\boldsymbol{R}^-=\prod_{\beta\in\Sigma_-}^{<}\exp(-\hbar\,\Omega_\beta), an ordered product over the negative affine roots Σ−={−γ+kδ:γ∈Φ+, k≥0}\Sigma_-={\{-\gamma+k\delta:\gamma\in\Phi_+,\,k\geq0\}} (with δ\delta the imaginary root of the affine root system and Φ+\Phi_+ the positive roots of g\mathfrak{g}), where the Ωβ\Omega_\beta are explicit simple tensors of Cartan–Weyl generators and their duals (a Cartan–Weyl basis being a basis of root vectors generalizing the classical Chevalley basis, here adapted to the Yangian). A. Appel, S. Gautam and C. Wendlandt proved a no-go theorem (2023): for g≇sl2\mathfrak{g}\not\cong\mathfrak{sl}_2, the factor R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) admits no factorization as an ordered product, over the positive roots Φ+\Phi_+ in any convex order (a total order << on Φ+\Phi_+ such that whenever α,β,α+β∈Φ+\alpha,\beta,\alpha+\beta\in\Phi_+, either α<α+β<β\alpha<\alpha+\beta<\beta or β<α+β<α\beta<\alpha+\beta<\alpha; with explicit orders used in types B2\mathsf{B}_2 and G2\mathsf{G}_2), of weight-zero factors each supported on multiples of a single positive root. Consequently the formula (5.43) is false for g≇sl2\mathfrak{g}\not\cong\mathfrak{sl}_2. This contrasts sharply with quantum affine algebras, where I. Damiani established the universal RR-matrix as an ordered product of qq-exponentials over the positive affine roots with an ordering satisfying interval-finiteness (every interval between two roots of the order is finite), mixing real and imaginary roots in a way the Khoroshkin–Tolstoy ordering does not. The no-go theorem does not exclude a Damiani-type factorization for the Yangian, which its authors describe as an interesting and challenging open problem. Work on the Lie-superalgebra analogue (Stukopin) was, per Wendlandt's introduction, based on the conjectural Khoroshkin–Tolstoy formulas.

Two further points from Wendlandt's paper frame the secondary question. First, the canonical element R\boldsymbol{R} does not converge in the ℏ\hbar-adically completed tensor product of the double with itself, so DYℏg\mathrm{D}Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g} is only quasitriangular in a 'topological' sense, made precise through the identification with R(w−z)\mathcal{R}(w-z); no completion that is both natural and compatible with the ℏ\hbar-adic topology, and in which the canonical element literally converges, is known. Second, the specialized double DYζg\mathbb{D}Y_\zeta\mathfrak{g} (with ℏ\hbar specialized to a nonzero complex number ζ\zeta) is not a Hopf algebra over C\mathbb{C}, but it carries a natural Z\mathbb{Z}-filtration, and the expectation is that its formal completion is the restricted quantum double of the specialized Yangian Yζ(g)Y_\zeta(\mathfrak{g}) within the appropriate category of Z\mathbb{Z}-filtered, complete topological Hopf algebras — the C\mathbb{C}-form of the double-realization conjecture, left open.

Problem Statement

Core question. For a finite-dimensional simple complex Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g} of rank at least 22, determine whether the unitriangular factors R±(s)\mathcal{R}^{\pm}(s) of the universal RR-matrix of the Yangian YℏgY_\hbar\mathfrak{g} — equivalently, the factors R±\boldsymbol{R}^{\pm} of the universal RR-matrix of the Yangian double DYℏg\mathrm{D}Y_\hbar\mathfrak{g}, which is the restricted quantum double of YℏgY_\hbar\mathfrak{g} — admit an explicit closed-form expression, and produce one if so. Concretely: give a formula (for example, a convergent infinite ordered product of exponentials indexed by the affine root set Σ−={−γ+kδ:γ∈Φ+, k≥0}\Sigma_-={\{-\gamma+k\delta:\gamma\in\Phi_+,\,k\geq0\}} with an ordering such as Damiani's interval-finite ordering, or any other expression of comparable directness) valid in the completed tensor product (Yℏ≤(g)⊗Yℏ≥(g))[ ⁣[s−1] ⁣](Y_\hbar^{\leq}(\mathfrak{g})\otimes Y_\hbar^{\geq}(\mathfrak{g}))[\![s^{-1}]\!], and prove that it satisfies the intertwining/recurrence relations that uniquely characterize R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) (equivalently, that it coincides with the canonical element of the pairing between the negative half of the double and its restricted dual). Any answer must be consistent with the Appel–Gautam–Wendlandt no-go theorem, which rules out ordered products over the finite positive roots of factors supported on multiples of a single root.

Secondary question (from the same source). Prove or disprove that the formal completion of the specialized Yangian double DYζg\mathbb{D}Y_\zeta\mathfrak{g}, ζ∈C×\zeta\in\mathbb{C}^{\times}, with respect to its natural Z\mathbb{Z}-filtration is isomorphic, as a complete topological Hopf algebra, to the restricted quantum double of the specialized Yangian Yζ(g)Y_\zeta(\mathfrak{g}) within the appropriate category of Z\mathbb{Z}-filtered complete topological Hopf algebras.

The two questions are jointly the remaining pieces of the Khoroshkin–Tolstoy program for the Yangian double: the core question makes its quasitriangular structure explicit and computable in the ℏ\hbar-adic setting, and the secondary question extends the proved C[ ⁣[ℏ] ⁣]\mathbb{C}[\![\hbar]\!]-form of the double realization to the specialized C\mathbb{C}-form.
