The two-particle S-matrix of planar AdS5×S5 string theory and N=4 super Yang–Mills is fixed, in its matrix part, by the centrally extended Lie superalgebra h = psu(2|2) ⋉ ℝ³, and was shown by Beisert to carry a further, non-standard 'braided' Yangian symmetry Y(h). The algebraic completion of that framework remains open: no universal R-matrix of Y(h) has been constructed and quasi-triangularity has not been established; the evaluation-representation theory of Y(h) — which h-modules lift, and at which spectral parameters tensor products become reducible — is only partially mapped; and the linked structural questions (uniqueness of Y(h) as a quasi-cocommutative Hopf algebra over h, existence and structure of the double Yangian, and incorporation of the sl(2) outer automorphism, the 'secret symmetry', with a quasi-cocommutative coproduct) remain unresolved. The source's remaining item, the scalar dressing phase, is recorded as superseded by the crossing-symmetric all-loop framework and is not part of the open core.

Background

In the planar limit, the AdS/CFT correspondence between N=4 super Yang–Mills theory in four dimensions and type IIB string theory on AdS5×S5 becomes an integrable system: single-trace operators and light-cone string excitations ('magnons') scatter elastically and factorizedly, with the two-particle scattering encoded in a matrix S depending on spectral parameters. In light-cone gauge the residual symmetry is a centrally extended su(2|2): su(2|2) is a Lie superalgebra, i.e. a Z₂-graded extension of su(2)⊕su(2), whose smallest non-trivial ('short') representations exist only after adjoining central and abelian charges; the resulting algebra h = psu(2|2) ⋉ ℝ³ (equivalently su(2|2) ⋉ ℝ²; its complexification is often written psl(2|2) ⋉ ℂ³) has a triplet of central charges with non-trivial coproducts, two of which are momentum-like, and whose eigenvalues on a representation are tied to the magnon dispersion relation. Beisert showed that h fixes the S-matrix on the fundamental magnon multiplet up to a scalar 'dressing phase', and that the full matrix is invariant under a Yangian Y(h). A Yangian over a Lie (super)algebra g is an infinite-dimensional Hopf algebra — a deformation of the enveloping algebra of g⊗ℂ[t] — whose generators come in levels (level-zero currents J and level-one currents Ĵ) and whose coproduct Δ, the rule for how the symmetry acts on two-particle states, extends the Lie symmetry to tensor products. An evaluation representation is a Yangian module in which the level-one generators act as u times the level-zero ones, u being the spectral parameter. A coproduct is quasi-cocommutative if the opposite coproduct Δ_op differs from Δ by conjugation with an R-matrix; the Hopf algebra is quasi-triangular if that R-matrix exists as a universal (representation-independent) element R of a completion of Y⊗Y, in which case R automatically satisfies the Yang–Baxter equation — the defining consistency condition of factorized scattering — and its evaluation on any representation yields the corresponding scattering matrix. Two features make Y(h) non-standard. First, its coproduct must be braided, i.e. multiplied by central-charge-dependent exponential factors, a consequence of the non-trivial coproduct of the central charges; as a result the S-matrix is not a function of the difference of spectral parameters (not of 'difference form'), unlike Yangian S-matrices built on simple Lie algebras. Second, the algebra possesses a 'secret symmetry': an outer automorphism of su(2|2) whose level-one extension acts as an additional exact symmetry of the S-matrix. For a simple Lie algebra g the Yangian double DY(g) is known to be quasi-triangular with an explicit factorized universal R-matrix (of Khoroshkin–Tolstoy type), from which the Yang–Baxter equation and the S-matrices on all representations follow algebraically. For the braided Yangian over h no such construction exists, even though the fundamental S-matrix is known explicitly, its Yang–Baxter equation has been verified case by case, and bound-state S-matrices have been produced by explicit fusion rather than derived from a universal object.

Problem Statement

Complete the quasi-triangular Hopf-algebraic foundation of the AdS/CFT S-matrix, as posed in the conclusions of Beisert's paper 'The S-Matrix of AdS/CFT and Yangian Symmetry'. This comprises three linked requests. (1) Representation theory of the braided Yangian Y(h) of the centrally extended algebra h = psu(2|2) ⋉ ℝ³: determine which representations of h lift to evaluation representations of Y(h), and at which values of the spectral parameters tensor products of such evaluation representations become reducible. As the source paper notes, this information could be used to prove that the braided coproduct is quasi-cocommutative, the Yang–Baxter equation for the S-matrix should then follow straightforwardly from symmetry instead of by direct verification, and it might give further understanding of the bound-state (atypical) representations. (2) Construct a universal R-matrix for this Yangian and prove that it is quasi-triangular, thereby placing the integrable structure on solid algebraic footing for arbitrary representations of the algebra, as is available for Yangians of simple Lie algebras. (3) Settle the associated structural questions: is Y(h) the unique quasi-cocommutative Hopf algebra based on h — that is, the unique quasi-cocommutative Hopf-algebra deformation of the current algebra U(h[u]) with level-zero part U(h), up to Hopf-algebra isomorphism; does a double Yangian exist and what is its structure; and can the sl(2) outer automorphism of h (whose level-one image is the secret symmetry) be incorporated into the Yangian so that the coproduct becomes quasi-cocommutative — and what are the representations in that case? All three requests, together with every sub-question stated inside them, are jointly required: each asks a separately formulated question, and resolving any one of them is partial progress toward the objective rather than a completion of the task. The three requests serve one scientific objective: a quasi-triangular framework from which the AdS/CFT worldsheet S-matrix, its Yang–Baxter equation, and its bound-state hierarchy follow from symmetry. The source paper's remaining item — the overall scalar dressing phase, which is not determined by either the Lie or the Yangian symmetry — is not part of this problem; its analytic determination was superseded by the crossing-symmetric all-loop framework.
