In the planar AdS/CFT correspondence, the exact two-body S-matrix governing both magnon scattering in the super Yang-Mills spin chain and worldsheet excitations of the AdS superstring is invariant under the Yangian of the centrally extended Lie superalgebra . For ordinary Yangians, evaluating the universal R-matrix of the quantum Yangian double on evaluation representations reconstructs crossing-invariant, unitary S-matrices from symmetry alone. The centrally extended case resists this construction: its coproduct is deformed by a braiding factor, the Yangian levels mix, and the classification of its evaluation representations is unknown. The open problem, posed explicitly in Spill's 2012 review, is to construct the quantum Yangian double of rigorously, to derive from it a universal R-matrix whose evaluations reproduce the full all-loop AdS/CFT S-matrix including bound-state S-matrices and the scalar dressing factor, and to work out the associated quantum representation theory. Substantial partial progress exists (complete classical Lie bialgebras, a quantum double for the q-deformed maximally extended algebra, fusion constructions of bound-state R-matrices, boundary coideal algebras), but the rational quantum double, its universal R-matrix, and the evaluation-representation classification remain unconstructed.
Background
The AdS/CFT correspondence relates planar super Yang-Mills theory to type IIB string theory on AdS. In the planar limit both sides appear integrable, and the central object of the spectral problem is a two-body S-matrix: at weak coupling it scatters magnons (elementary spin-chain excitations carrying momentum along the single-trace spin chain), and at strong coupling it scatters worldsheet excitations of the light-cone-gauged superstring. Beisert showed that this S-matrix is fixed, up to an overall scalar factor, by invariance under two copies of a centrally extended superalgebra : is a Lie superalgebra with bosonic part and eight fermionic generators, and the extension adjoins three central charges (the light-cone Hamiltonian and two further charges , ) whose eigenvalues on a fundamental magnon depend on the momentum and the coupling — the algebra is 'dynamic' because the symmetry acts differently at different couplings. The S-matrix is additionally invariant under a Yangian, the infinite-dimensional Hopf-algebra extension introduced by Drinfeld, whose bilocal level-one generators encode the nonlocal conserved charges expected from integrability. The remaining scalar freedom, the dressing factor, is fixed not by this symmetry but by the crossing equation; its exact solution involves a nontrivial analytic structure (an integral representation built from the dilogarithm, with nontrivial branch choices).
For a Yangian of an ordinary simple (super)algebra, the mathematical situation is far more complete. The Yangian double , constructed by Khoroshkin and Tolstoi via Drinfeld's quantum double of a Borel subalgebra, is a quasitriangular Hopf algebra: it contains a universal R-matrix , an abstract element satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation, whose evaluation on tensor products of evaluation representations (modules where the algebra acts with a spectral-parameter shift) produces R-matrices that are automatically crossing-invariant and unitary up to a conventional choice in the inversion of the Cartan generator. Spill's review (2012) demonstrated this reconstruction explicitly for -invariant models and for , and showed that the AdS/CFT S-matrix at weak and strong coupling can likewise be recovered from the centrally extended Yangian — deriving Drinfeld's second realization of along the way, with a 'balanced' inversion prescription for the Cartan operator that produces unitary scalar factors.
The centrally extended case, however, is non-standard in several structural ways that block the double construction. The RTT realization of Beisert and de Leeuw shows that the levels of this Yangian mix, the mixing being generated by a braiding factor that deforms the coproduct; in effect two of the three central charges are identified with a braiding generator, so the coproduct is not the standard one assumed in Drinfeld's double construction. The invariant bilinear form of the central extension is degenerate, the outer automorphisms act nontrivially (including a 'secret' with no Lie-algebra analogue), and the classical analysis shows the central charges become dependent on one another and on the loop parameter, inducing a degree shift in the loop algebra. Moreover, simple evaluation representations do not exist for Yangians beyond the family, and Arutyunov, de Leeuw and Torrielli exhibited an evaluation representation over a long (16-dimensional) representation of the central extension for which no compatible S-matrix exists. The classical limit — the Lie bialgebra and classical -matrix of — was established by Beisert and Spill and has recently been given a complete origin by contraction and reduction from the exceptional superalgebra by Beisert and Im; the quantum problem, whose importance is emphasized throughout Spill's review, is what remains open.
Problem Statement
Construct, at the quantum level, the Yangian double of the centrally extended superalgebra underlying the AdS/CFT integrable S-matrix, and establish its representation theory. Concretely, the problem as posed in Spill's review asks for:
-
A mathematically rigorous construction of the quantum double — a quasitriangular Hopf superalgebra extending the known quantum Yangian whose non-standard features (braided coproduct in which two central charges are identified with a braiding generator, mixing of Yangian levels, degenerate invariant form) must be incorporated — obtained, for example, as Drinfeld's quantum double of a suitable Borel subalgebra with the correct enlargement by dual generators.
-
From this double, the universal R-matrix , in explicit or rigorously controlled form (as an ordered infinite product or an equivalent factorized expression), whose evaluations reproduce the all-loop AdS/CFT S-matrix: the fundamental magnon S-matrix, the bound-state S-matrices (directly on evaluation representations or through a compatible fusion procedure), and the full scalar dressing factor with its exact analytic structure. The represented R-matrices must satisfy the physical consistency requirements (unitarity, Yang-Baxter equation, and compatibility with crossing) rather than only the formal axioms.
-
The associated quantum representation theory: a consistent quantum-level interpretation of the identifications among the central charges (and of the spectral-parameter shifts they induce, known from the classical/first-order analysis); a determination of how these identifications affect the representation theory of the centrally extended Yangian — namely a classification of its finite-dimensional evaluation-type representations, or a proof that the central-charge identifications leave their simple/typical content and reducibility structure unchanged; and a determination of how the outer automorphisms (including the 'secret' ) act on the quantum algebra and on these representations.
These three deliverables are all required for completion and jointly serve one objective stated by the review: the complete algebraic reconstruction of the exact all-loop S-matrix from symmetry, so that the S-matrix bootstrap assumptions (imposed symmetry, Yang-Baxter equation, crossing, unitarity) become derived properties of a single Hopf-algebraic structure. The review's outlook additionally lists adjacent open problems — a full proof of quantum integrability of the AdS superstring, an algebraic (Yangian-based) derivation of the finite-size thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) or quantum spectral curve (QSC) equations, extensions to other superalgebras such as and and to q-deformed (trigonometric) quantum groups, and the derivation of boundary reflection matrices from the universal R-matrix via reduction operations such as (where is the antipode and the multiplication map of the Hopf algebra) — which belong to the same research program but are not part of the completion of the problem as stated here.
