Gautam–Toledano Laredo–Wendlandt (2019) constructed the Gauss decomposition R(s)=R+(s)R0(s)R−(s)\mathcal{R}(s)=\mathcal{R}^+(s)\mathcal{R}^0(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) of the universal RR-matrix of the Yangian Yℏ(g)Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g) of a complex semisimple Lie algebra g\mathfrak g, and left two structural gaps: the unitriangular factor R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) is given by a closed formula only for sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2, and the cocycle identity it satisfies, like the coassociativity of the deformed Drinfeld coproduct, holds only after evaluation on finite-dimensional representations because the two sides of each candidate algebra-level identity lie in incompatible completed rings. Since then, the expected conceptual framework, the Yangian double, has been given a rigorous structure theory (Wendlandt's PBW theorem and proof that the double is the restricted quantum double of the Yangian), and the natural Khoroshkin–Tolstoy factorization ansatz for R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) has been disproved for g≄sl2\mathfrak g\not\simeq\mathfrak{sl}_2 (Appel–Gautam–Wendlandt), while theta-series methods have produced representation-level conjugation formulas but, as of 2026, still no algebra-level closed form. The problem — an explicit, representation-independent theory of the Gauss factors for arbitrary semisimple g\mathfrak g, comprising a closed form for R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) and an algebra-level formulation of the cocycle and coassociativity identities — remains open.

Background

The Yangian Yℏ(g)Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g) of a complex semisimple Lie algebra g\mathfrak g, introduced by Drinfeld, is the standard quantization of the polynomial current Lie algebra g[z]\mathfrak g[z] (the enveloping algebra U(g[z])U(\mathfrak g[z]) with its natural Lie bialgebra structure deformed by a parameter ℏ\hbar). It is the rational member of the family of quantum groups, parallel to the quantum loop algebra Uq(Lg)U_q(L\mathfrak g), the quantization of U(g⊗C[z,z−1])U(\mathfrak g\otimes\mathbb C[z,z^{-1}]). Drinfeld proved that Yℏ(g)Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g) carries a universal RR-matrix R(s)∈Yℏ(g)⊗2[[s−1]]\mathcal{R}(s)\in Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g)^{\otimes 2}[[s^{-1}]], a formal series in a spectral parameter ss whose evaluations on finite-dimensional representations produce the rational solutions of the quantum Yang–Baxter equation (QYBE, the consistency equation R12(s1)R13(s1+s2)R23(s2)=R23(s2)R13(s1+s2)R12(s1)R_{12}(s_1)R_{13}(s_1+s_2)R_{23}(s_2)=R_{23}(s_2)R_{13}(s_1+s_2)R_{12}(s_1) underlying quantum integrable systems).

Gautam–Toledano Laredo–Wendlandt (GTW) proved that R(s)\mathcal{R}(s) admits a Gauss decomposition R(s)=R+(s)⋅R0(s)⋅R−(s)\mathcal{R}(s)=\mathcal{R}^+(s)\cdot\mathcal{R}^0(s)\cdot\mathcal{R}^-(s) in Yℏ(g)⊗2[[s−1]]Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g)^{\otimes 2}[[s^{-1}]] with R+(s)=(R−(−s)21)−1\mathcal{R}^+(s)=(\mathcal{R}^-(-s)^{21})^{-1}, where the abelian factor R0\mathcal{R}^0 has coefficients in the commutative Cartan part and the unitriangular factor R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) decomposes as ∑β∈Q+Rβ−(s)\sum_{\beta\in\mathsf Q_+}\mathcal{R}^-_\beta(s) over the positive root lattice Q+\mathsf Q_+, with Rβ−(s)∈(Yℏ−(g)−β⊗Yℏ+(g)β)[[s−1]]\mathcal{R}^-_\beta(s)\in (Y_\hbar^-(\mathfrak g)_{-\beta}\otimes Y_\hbar^+(\mathfrak g)_\beta)[[s^{-1}]] and constant term 11; here Yℏ±(g)Y_\hbar^\pm(\mathfrak g) are the subalgebras generated by the negative (resp. positive) Drinfeld currents xi±(u)x_i^\pm(u), the generating series of loop generators in Drinfeld's second realization of the Yangian. Rather than by a formula, R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) is characterized by this unitriangularity together with the requirement that it conjugate the standard coproduct Δs\Delta_s into the deformed Drinfeld coproduct ΔD,s\Delta_{D,s} on the modes of the Drinfeld–Cartan series ξi(u)\xi_i(u) (the commuting currents deforming h⊗1+z h[z]\mathfrak h\otimes 1+z\,\mathfrak h[z]), i.e. R−(s) Δs(ti,1)=ΔD,s(ti,1) R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s)\,\Delta_s(t_{i,1})=\Delta_{D,s}(t_{i,1})\,\mathcal{R}^-(s) for every ii, where ΔD,s\Delta_{D,s} is defined by residue/contour-integral formulas; this characterization yields uniqueness.

On finite-dimensional representations R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) becomes a rational function of ss, and resumming the three Gauss factors produces meromorphic RR-matrices R↑/↓(s)\mathcal{R}^{\uparrow/\downarrow}(s) that braid the category Repfd(Yℏ(g))\mathrm{Rep}_{\mathrm{fd}}(Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g)) of finite-dimensional representations, within the framework of meromorphic tensor categories (tensor categories whose tensor product depends on an additional complex shift parameter and whose associativity and commutativity constraints are meromorphic, rather than rational, functions of it) earlier developed by Gautam–Toledano Laredo, who constructed a meromorphic tensor equivalence between the representation categories of Yℏ(g)Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g) and Uq(Lg)U_q(L\mathfrak g).

Two features of this construction remain representation-dependent. First, for g=sl2\mathfrak g=\mathfrak{sl}_2 GTW give a closed form for R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s): a generating series built from the contour integrals ω(s)k=(−1)kkℏ∮x−(u−s)k⊗x+(u)k du\omega(s)_k=\frac{(-1)^k}{k\hbar}\oint x^-(u-s)^k\otimes x^+(u)^k\,du via the solution of an ordinary differential equation; for g≄sl2\mathfrak g\not\simeq\mathfrak{sl}_2 nothing comparable is known, and the natural candidate — Khoroshkin–Tolstoy's conjectural ordered product over the positive roots of sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2-type factors, analogous to Damiani's factorization of the universal RR-matrix of a quantum affine algebra — was disproved for g≄sl2\mathfrak g\not\simeq\mathfrak{sl}_2 by Appel–Gautam–Wendlandt. Second, the cocycle identity for R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) (the tensor-structure identity making R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) a rational braided tensor structure between the standard and Drinfeld tensor products) and the coassociativity of ΔD,s\Delta_{D,s} hold as identities of rational functions after evaluation on finite-dimensional representations, but the naive algebra-level identities do not even type-check: their two sides are formal series belonging to different, mutually non-comparable completed rings. For the cocycle identity the two sides lie in Yℏ(g)⊗3[s1;s1−1]][[s2−1]]Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g)^{\otimes 3}[s_1;s_1^{-1}]][[s_2^{-1}]] and Yℏ(g)⊗3[s2;s2−1]][[s1−1]]Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g)^{\otimes 3}[s_2;s_2^{-1}]][[s_1^{-1}]], respectively (bracket notation as printed in the source), and the candidate coassociativity identity suffers the analogous mismatch.

The expected conceptual home for both issues is the Yangian double DYℏ(g)DY_\hbar(\mathfrak g) — the Hopf algebra generated by Drinfeld currents with integer grading indices, quantizing the graded Drinfeld double (g[z±1],g[z],z−1g[z−1])(\mathfrak g[z^{\pm1}],\mathfrak g[z],z^{-1}\mathfrak g[z^{-1}]) of g[z]\mathfrak g[z] — in which R(s)\mathcal{R}(s) should arise as the canonical element. Since 2019 the double has been given a rigorous structure theory: Wendlandt proved a Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt (PBW) theorem (a linear basis from ordered monomials in the generators) for DYℏ(g)DY_\hbar(\mathfrak g) when g\mathfrak g is of finite type or simply-laced affine type, and proved the Khoroshkin–Tolstoy conjecture that DYℏ(g)DY_\hbar(\mathfrak g) realizes the restricted quantum double of Yℏ(g)Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g) — the quantum-double construction applied to the pairing between the Yangian and its restricted dual — identifying the universal RR-matrix with the canonical element of that pairing. What the doubled, canonical picture has not yet delivered is precisely the explicit, representation-independent theory of the Gauss factors.

Problem Statement

For an arbitrary complex semisimple Lie algebra g\mathfrak g with g≄sl2\mathfrak g\not\simeq\mathfrak{sl}_2, establish an explicit, representation-independent (algebra-level) theory of the unitriangular factor of the Gauss decomposition of the Yangian universal RR-matrix. The problem comprises two linked parts, concerning general g\mathfrak g rather than rank one, serving the single objective of replacing the current recursion- and representation-based construction of the Gauss factors by formulas and identities internal to the Yangian algebra (or its double):

(1) Explicit closed form. Produce an explicit closed-form expression for the unitriangular factor R−(s)∈(Yℏ−(g)⊗Yℏ+(g))[[s−1]]\mathcal{R}^-(s)\in(Y_\hbar^-(\mathfrak g)\otimes Y_\hbar^+(\mathfrak g))[[s^{-1}]] of the Gauss decomposition R(s)=R+(s)R0(s)R−(s)\mathcal{R}(s)=\mathcal{R}^+(s)\mathcal{R}^0(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s), where R+(s)=(R−(−s)21)−1\mathcal{R}^+(s)=(\mathcal{R}^-(-s)^{21})^{-1} — explicit in the sense that each root-lattice homogeneous component Rβ−(s)\mathcal{R}^-_\beta(s), β∈Q+\beta\in\mathsf Q_+, is given by an expression in the Drinfeld generators of Yℏ(g)Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g) and the root data of g\mathfrak g that is either finite or an explicit generating series whose coefficients are determined by those data, with no residual recursion or differential equation left to be solved order by order, and in particular not given merely as the coefficient-wise solution of the known intertwining recursion written uniformly for all g\mathfrak g (for example an explicit generating series extending to arbitrary g\mathfrak g the sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2 formula of Gautam–Toledano Laredo–Wendlandt, or an ordered-product factorization over the positive roots that extends the kind of formula Damiani proved for the universal RR-matrix of a quantum affine algebra while differing from the Khoroshkin–Tolstoy ansatz excluded below) — together with proofs that the expression is a well-defined formal series, is unitriangular (Rβ−(s)∈(Yℏ−(g)−β⊗Yℏ+(g)β)[[s−1]]\mathcal{R}^-_\beta(s)\in(Y_\hbar^-(\mathfrak g)_{-\beta}\otimes Y_\hbar^+(\mathfrak g)_\beta)[[s^{-1}]], constant term 1⊗21^{\otimes2}), and satisfies the intertwining equations with the standard coproduct Δs\Delta_s and the deformed Drinfeld coproduct ΔD,s\Delta_{D,s} of the Drinfeld–Cartan series, which by the known uniqueness theorem identify it with R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s). Any answer must be compatible with the no-go theorem of Appel–Gautam–Wendlandt, which rules out the Khoroshkin–Tolstoy ordered product of sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2-type factors over the positive roots.

(2) Algebra-level identities. Formulate and prove algebra-level versions of (a) the cocycle identity satisfied by R−(s)\mathcal{R}^-(s) and (b) the coassociativity of the deformed Drinfeld coproduct ΔD,s\Delta_{D,s}: identities holding inside a single, explicitly specified algebraic object attached to the Yangian itself (for instance a suitably defined completion or topological tensor structure on Yℏ(g)⊗3Y_\hbar(\mathfrak g)^{\otimes3} in which both sides of each candidate identity are simultaneously defined), independent of evaluation on finite-dimensional representations.

An answer treating only sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2, or verifying any of the identities only on finite-dimensional modules, does not meet the objective; formulas or identities obtained only after evaluating one tensor factor on a representation (such as the theta-series conjugation formulas of Zhang) likewise do not, since the objective is the algebra-level series and identities.
