The generalized chiral Potts model (gCPM) is the archetypal integrable lattice model whose spectral parameter lives on a genus >= 2 algebraic curve and whose R-matrix lacks the rapidity-difference property. Moosavian, Yamazaki and Zhou (2025) engineered the gCPM inside Costello's four-dimensional Chern-Simons (4d CS) theory using a fractional-power meromorphic one-form, generalizing the 1980s Atiyah-Murray correspondence between the chiral Potts spectral curve and hyperbolic monopole spectral data from SU(2) to SU(n), and tracing both sides to a common ten-dimensional holomorphic Chern-Simons origin. Their construction, however, stops short of the R-matrix: the required one-form necessarily has zeros on the spectral curve, and since only the ratio of the one-form to the loop-counting parameter hbar enters the path integral, these zeros correspond to an effective hbar -> infinity, where the perturbative expansion — the only method currently available for computing R-matrices from 4d CS — fails. The problem, formulated by the source paper itself as its principal outstanding challenge, is threefold and single-objective: give a non-perturbative definition of the 4d CS theory with the gCPM one-form; construct within it line defects carrying the minimal cyclic representations of the quantum affine algebra at a root of unity , thereby formulating the theory at roots of unity and fixing the relation between hbar and the quantum-group parameters (n, N); and compute the exchange of two such defects, showing it reproduces the known gCPM R-matrix. No derivation of the gCPM R-matrix from four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory is known.
Background
A two-dimensional integrable lattice model is a spin system on a square lattice whose row-to-row transfer matrices commute; solvability is certified by a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE), and the central object is the R-matrix, an operator on the tensor product of the quantum spaces of two lattice sites depending on spectral parameters that live on an algebraic curve. Almost every known solvable model has a spectral curve of genus 0 or 1 and an R-matrix depending only on the difference of suitably chosen rapidities (the rapidity-difference property). The chiral Potts model (CPM) is the fundamental exception: it is the -symmetric generalization of the Ising model () found solvable in the late 1980s, its spins take values in , its Boltzmann weights depend on two points of a curve of genus greater than one for , and its R-matrix lacks the rapidity-difference property. The generalized chiral Potts models (gCPM) of Date, Jimbo, Miki and Miwa extend the construction to spins valued in , associated with the Lie algebra . On this side the R-matrix is already known: it is the intertwiner (a map unique up to scalar that commutes with the quantum group action) of a tensor product of two minimal cyclic representations — -dimensional irreducible representations of the quantum affine algebra (a -deformation of the universal enveloping algebra of the affine Lie algebra) at a root of unity ( odd), parameterized by points of the spectral curve — and it can also be obtained by the Bazhanov-Stroganov descent from the six-vertex model (the square-lattice ice-rule model, the prototypical exactly solved vertex model) at . The four-dimensional Chern-Simons (4d CS) theory of Costello, developed into an integrability machine with Witten and Yamazaki, is a gauge theory on , topological along a Riemann surface and holomorphic along , with action , where is a meromorphic one-form on , is the Chern-Simons three-form of the gauge field, and is the loop-counting parameter. Line defects along , supported at points of , carry representations of the gauge algebra or its quantum deformation; the YBE follows from topological invariance along , and the R-matrix is computed perturbatively in from the exchange of two line defects. All lattice models previously engineered this way use one-forms with poles only, producing rational, trigonometric, or elliptic R-matrices. Moosavian, Yamazaki and Zhou (arXiv:2502.17545, 2025) connected the two threads. They generalized an observation of Atiyah and Murray from the late 1980s — identifying the CPM curve, after a reality condition and a zero-mass limit, with the spectral curves of non-integral hyperbolic monopoles constructed by Murray and Singer (Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield monopoles, i.e. static self-dual solutions of the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations, on hyperbolic three-space ) — from to , and they engineered the gCPM within 4d CS. The engineering needs a one-form built from fractional powers, whose branching explains both the genus curve and the absence of the rapidity-difference property. This is exactly where the standard machinery breaks down: uniquely among models engineered in 4d CS, the required one-form has zeros as well as poles on the spectral curve ; since only the ratio enters the path integral, a zero of acts as an effective , where the perturbative -expansion cannot be trusted. Consistently, the gCPM has no classical R-matrix for a quantum R-matrix to deform, so the usual expansion has no leading term at all. The paper therefore derives the structure of the gCPM from 4d CS — and traces the whole monopole/model correspondence to a ten-dimensional holomorphic Chern-Simons theory (the holomorphic analogue of Chern-Simons theory on a complex manifold) — but leaves the R-matrix itself uncomputed, calling its explicit computation an outstanding challenge on multiple levels: a non-perturbative definition of the theory, its formulation at roots of unity, and line defects carrying the minimal cyclic representations.
Problem Statement
Within four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on equipped with the generalized chiral Potts one-form of Moosavian-Yamazaki-Zhou — or equivalently within the six- or ten-dimensional holomorphic Chern-Simons theories from which it descends — derive the R-matrix of the generalized chiral Potts model from first principles. This comprises three linked levels that the source paper identifies as the components of one challenge:
(1) Non-perturbative definition. Give a concrete non-perturbative definition of the 4d CS path integral with the one-form (for example a brane/string-theoretic realization, a constructive or lattice regularization, or a definition through the six-dimensional holomorphic Chern-Simons theory), replacing the formal expression
by a definition practical enough to support the computation of line-defect correlators.
(2) Roots of unity and line defects. Within that definition, construct line defects carrying the minimal cyclic representations of at ( odd, ) — that is, formulate the 4d CS theory at roots of unity — and identify the precise relation between the loop-counting parameter and the quantum-group parameters .
(3) The R-matrix. Compute the exchange of two such line defects and show that the resulting operator is the gCPM R-matrix: the intertwiner of the tensor product of two minimal cyclic representations, satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation with the pair of spectral parameters restricted to the gCPM spectral curve and agreeing with the known Date-Jimbo-Miki-Miwa / Kashaev-Mangazeev-Nakanishi R-matrix up to the conventional scalar factor and gauge freedom. A derivation via the Bazhanov-Stroganov route — first computing the intertwiner of one line defect carrying a minimal cyclic representation and one carrying the spin- representation at , within the non-perturbative construction of (1) and the roots-of-unity theory of (2), and then solving the resulting quadratic Yang-Baxter equation — is an acceptable form of the answer.
The single scientific objective uniting the three levels is a first-principles derivation of the gCPM R-matrix from 4d Chern-Simons theory; levels (1) and (2) are the enabling steps that the source paper identifies as indispensable for (3), not independent deliverables, and the completion boundary is reached exactly when the R-matrix (with its spectral curve and root-of-unity structure, and the - relation) is obtained from the non-perturbative construction.
