Integrable long-range spin chains with pair potentials built from the Weierstrass elliptic function organize into two disjoint landscapes distinguished by the underlying elliptic R-matrix: a face-type landscape (Heisenberg XXX, Haldane-Shastry, Inozemtsev and its q-deformation; partially isotropic and exactly solvable) and a vertex-type landscape (the regularized Matushko-Zotov chain MZ' and the Sechin-Zotov chain; fully anisotropic), meeting only at the rational Haldane-Shastry chain. While integrability of these chains is established or strongly supported, no exact characterization of the spectrum - eigenvalues, eigenstates, degeneracy structure - is known for the two elliptic q-deformed members, the q-deformed Inozemtsev chain and the MZ' chain, and the elliptic quantum-group structures that would enable Bethe-ansatz diagonalization have not been identified. This problem, posed in the Outlook of Klabbers and Lamers's 'Landscapes of integrable long-range spin chains', asks for an exact characterization of both spectra and for the determination and exploitation of the pertinent elliptic quantum groups to construct them by Bethe-ansatz methods.

Background

Integrable spin chains are one-dimensional quantum systems possessing enough commuting conserved quantities to be exactly tractable. The prototype is the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with nearest-neighbour exchange, which comes in an isotropic (XXX), a partially isotropic (XXZ) and a fully anisotropic (XYZ) version, all diagonalized by the Bethe ansatz - a construction of eigenvectors as superpositions of magnons (travelling spin flips) whose momenta are fixed by two-body scattering data. The algebraic origin of this solvability is the Yang-Baxter equation, the consistency condition that lets many-body scattering factorize into two-body scatterings; its solutions, the R-matrices, encode the two-body scattering and generate the conserved quantities. At the elliptic level this equation has two inequivalent R-matrix solutions: Baxter's eight-vertex R-matrix of vertex type, and Felder's dynamical R-matrix of face type, which is the defining data of an elliptic quantum group - a quasi-Hopf deformation of an enveloping algebra in which, beyond the usual deformation parameter, a dynamical parameter shifts in the structure constants. At the elliptic level the two R-matrices are related by the face-vertex transformation, but only on a restricted (zero-weight) subspace.

Long-range spin chains replace nearest-neighbour exchange by pair potentials built from the Weierstrass elliptic function ℘(u)\wp(u) (a doubly periodic meromorphic function) with a real period NN (the lattice size) and an imaginary period ω\omega; its rational, trigonometric and hyperbolic limits organize an entire landscape of models. The Inozemtsev chain uses this potential to interpolate exactly between the Heisenberg XXX chain (short-range limit) and the Haldane-Shastry chain (long-range limit, with inverse-square interactions ∼1/sin⁡2\sim 1/\sin^2). The Haldane-Shastry chain has an enhanced infinite-dimensional symmetry, the Yangian of gl2\mathfrak{gl}_2 (a deformation of the enveloping algebra of the loop algebra of gl2\mathfrak{gl}_2), and eigenvectors built from Jack polynomials (a one-parameter family of symmetric polynomials). Long-range chains are typically obtained by 'freezing' a quantum many-body system with spins (a spin Calogero-Sutherland system, or its relativistic q-deformed cousin, a spin Ruijsenaars system): at special equilibrium configurations of the particle coordinates the many-body problem factorizes and the Hamiltonian acts on the spin degrees of freedom alone.

The two landscapes of elliptic long-range chains are almost disjoint. On the face side live the Heisenberg XXX, Haldane-Shastry and Inozemtsev chains, together with the q-deformed Inozemtsev chain constructed by Klabbers and Lamers (2024) from a new elliptic spin-Ruijsenaars system based on Felder's dynamical R-matrix; these chains are partially isotropic (they preserve the total spin projection SzS^z), so the Hilbert space decomposes into fixed-weight sectors, which allows one to work sector by sector and connects the spectra to scalar many-body systems and Jack/Macdonald-type wave functions. On the vertex side live the elliptic q-deformed chain of Matushko and Zotov, built from the Baxter-Belavin R-matrix, its regularized version (the MZ' chain) that admits a short-range limit (the XX chain with q-deformed antiperiodic boundary conditions), and the q→1q\to1 limit known as the Sechin-Zotov chain (SZ'), which the Landscapes paper shows to be the antiperiodic version of the Inozemtsev chain in a precise sense; its trigonometric limit is the antiperiodic twisted Haldane-Shastry chain of Fukui and Kawakami. These vertex-type chains are fully anisotropic: their spin symmetry is reduced to a discrete global spin flip, so the Hilbert space decomposes only into even and odd sectors. The two landscapes intersect in a single point, the rational Haldane-Shastry chain.

What is already solved lies strictly below the elliptic q-deformed level. The undeformed Inozemtsev chain admits a complete coordinate Bethe ansatz (Klabbers-Lamers 2022), built from the eigenfunctions of the scalar elliptic Calogero-Sutherland system. The Haldane-Shastry chain was recently given a Bethe ansatz inside the trigonometric spin Calogero-Sutherland model by Ferrando, Lamers, Levkovich-Maslyuk and Serban (2025), who used its Yangian symmetry to build a Heisenberg-style Bethe algebra (a commuting family of transfer matrices). For the two elliptic q-deformed chains nothing comparable exists: on the face side even the one-magnon dispersion of the q-deformed Inozemtsev chain has resisted compact closed form; on the vertex side there is no weight decomposition and even individual eigenvectors are hard to find; and the face-vertex transformation, although it relates the underlying R-matrices, provably does not extend to the long-range chains themselves, because it depends on the spectral parameter and fails to conjugate the derivative terms appearing in the long-range interactions. The algebraic machinery that solved the face side at the rational and trigonometric levels - the Yangian, the (degenerate) affine Hecke and Temperley-Lieb algebras (the braid-type symmetry algebras of nearest-neighbour chains), and the theory of Jack and Macdonald symmetric polynomials - has no known elliptic counterpart adapted to long-range interactions. Klabbers and Lamers's 'Landscapes of integrable long-range spin chains' (2024) mapped this situation and posed, as its first two open directions, the problem posed here.

Problem Statement

Give an exact characterization of the spectra of the two elliptic long-range spin chains of spin 1/2: (i) the q-deformed Inozemtsev chain (face type, built from Felder's dynamical elliptic R-matrix, partially isotropic) and (ii) the MZ' chain (vertex type, the regularized Matushko-Zotov chain built from the Baxter-Belavin eight-vertex R-matrix, fully anisotropic, with the Sechin-Zotov chain SZ' arising as its q→1q\to1 limit). Concretely: for arbitrary finite length NN and generic parameter values, determine all eigenvalues, construct the eigenstates, and establish the degeneracy structure of each chain. Determine and leverage the pertinent elliptic quantum-group or algebraic structures to construct these spectra by Bethe-ansatz methods - the elliptic, long-range analogue of the role played by the Yangian for the Heisenberg XXX and Haldane-Shastry chains, by the (degenerate) affine Hecke and Temperley-Lieb algebras (the braid-type symmetry algebras of nearest-neighbour XXZ-type chains) for the XXZ level, and by the Bethe algebra of Ferrando et al. for the Haldane-Shastry chain inside the trigonometric spin Calogero-Sutherland model. The two components form one scientific objective - exact solvability of the elliptic long-range landscapes - with the algebraic structure both a deliverable in itself and the expected route to the spectra. A complete answer must be consistent with the known limits: the short-range nearest-neighbour limits of both chains, the long-range limit of the q-deformed Inozemtsev chain to the q-deformed Haldane-Shastry chain with its known spectrum, and the rational Haldane-Shastry point common to both landscapes; and with exact diagonalization at small sizes. No method is prescribed for the spectral component itself: a solution via Bethe ansatz, via eigenfunctions of the underlying scalar spin-Ruijsenaars systems through freezing, or by another exact route are all admissible, provided the full spectrum and degeneracy structure are characterized and the pertinent algebraic structures are identified.
