The classification of 4x4 solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) was completed by de Leeuw and Posch (arXiv:2411.18685), who lifted Hietarinta's constant solutions to spectral-parameter-dependent non-regular R-matrices and compared them with Lax operators. They proved that for regular Lax operators the fundamental commutation relations (RLL relations) reproduce exactly the regular YBE solutions, but for non-regular Lax operators the correspondence fails: the matrix solving the RLL relations generically satisfies only a modified Yang-Baxter equation carrying an extra matrix factor . The authors state they could not identify a universal form of this modification, nor a correspondence to any known deformation of the YBE. This problem asks for a complete structural characterization of these modified Yang-Baxter equations: a canonical form or taxonomy of the modification, necessary and sufficient criteria for promoting an RLL-solution to a genuine YBE solution, and a determination of whether these equations are equivalent to known twisted, dynamical, boundary, or generalized YBE deformations or define a new class.
Background
The quantum Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) is the consistency condition at the heart of the quantum inverse scattering method, the framework that produces exactly solvable quantum spin chains. It states that an operator , the R-matrix, must satisfy where acts on the first two of three copies of the local Hilbert space (here , so is a matrix) and are complex spectral parameters parametrizing the commuting family of transfer matrices, the traces of chain-products of or matrices whose simultaneous eigenvalues give the spin-chain spectrum. A solution is called regular if , where is the permutation operator exchanging the two tensor factors; regular R-matrices correspond to spin chains with nearest-neighbour Hamiltonians solvable by the algebraic Bethe ansatz, the eigenvector construction for transfer matrices built from an R-matrix. All constant (all spectral parameters equal) solutions were classified by Hietarinta in 1992, and all regular spectral-parameter-dependent solutions were classified by Corcoran and de Leeuw in 2023 using the boost-operator formalism, which reconstructs the R-matrix from the Hamiltonian by iterated conjugation. In arXiv:2411.18685 de Leeuw and Posch completed the classification by constructing the remaining, non-regular solutions: they expand analytically around each of Hietarinta's constant solutions and solve the YBE order by order, reproducing and extending the earlier algorithmic results of Garkun, Barik, Fedorov and Gritsev.
A second pillar of the inverse scattering method is the Lax operator , an auxiliary-space operator whose algebraic relations are governed by the fundamental commutation relations, also called RLL relations, Given , an invertible solving these relations guarantees a commuting family of transfer matrices. de Leeuw and Posch prove that for regular Lax operators this correspondence is one-to-one: the R-matrix obtained from the RLL relations is exactly the regular YBE solution. For non-regular Lax operators the correspondence fails. Solving the RLL relations for yields matrices that generically do not satisfy the YBE but instead a modified Yang-Baxter equation, or equivalently , with an a-priori-unknown matrix factor (equations (87)-(88) of the paper's v6; numbered (77)-(78) in v1; as printed in the paper, the final factor on the right-hand side of the first equation is rather than , an inconsequential convention since is defined as whatever factor makes the relation hold). A representative example: for the non-regular solution , which violates braiding unitarity, i.e. with the permutation operator, the general RLL solution is with , and it satisfies the YBE only when or ; in the latter case it degenerates to a regular eight-vertex, free-fermion R-matrix, i.e. one with eight nonzero matrix entries corresponding to a model reducible to non-interacting fermions.
Several deformations of the YBE are classical: the twisted Yang-Baxter equation (Tarasov), the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation (Etingof and Varchenko), boundary solutions (Gerstenhaber and Giaquinto), and the generalized Yang-Baxter equation of Kashaev and Stroganov. de Leeuw and Posch compared their modified equations against these frameworks and found no clear correspondence. In their conclusions they state they have not been able to identify a universal form of the modification , and they leave the structural characterization of these modified equations as an open question, alongside two further separate avenues: extending the classification itself to local dimension , and deriving the physical properties (spin chains, quantum circuits) of the newly classified models.
Problem Statement
Characterize completely the modified Yang-Baxter equations that arise from non-regular Lax operators in the completed classification of solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation (de Leeuw-Posch, arXiv:2411.18685). A complete answer comprises three interlocking deliverables that jointly form one objective, a full structural characterization of the modified equation for the classified non-regular families:
-
Universal form of the modification. Determine whether the matrix (equivalently ) in the modified Yang-Baxter equations (87)-(88) of the paper admits a universal structural form, a canonical form of the modification valid across all non-regular Lax-operator families and expressed in the data of each family (its Lax operator, parameters and free functions) rather than a restatement of the defining ratio, or else give a complete taxonomy of the modification types inequivalent under the source's identifications (reparametrization, normalization, transposition/parity and local basis change) together with a proof that no single universal form exists.
-
Promotion criterion. Establish necessary and sufficient conditions under which a solution of the fundamental commutation relations for a non-regular Lax operator satisfies the genuine Yang-Baxter equation, thereby identifying exactly where the one-to-one correspondence between Lax operators and YBE solutions, which holds in the regular case, survives.
-
Relation to known deformations. Decide whether the modified equations can be transformed, by reparameterizations, factorizations, or gauge (similarity) transformations, into any previously studied deformation of the Yang-Baxter equation (twisted, dynamical, boundary, or generalized Kashaev-Stroganov type), or whether they define a genuinely new class.
The source paper's outlook additionally lists two further avenues that are separate research directions and are not part of this problem's completion boundary: extending the classification method itself to local dimension , and deriving the physical properties (spin chains, quantum circuits) of the newly classified models.
