Maillet–Niccoli–Pezelier solved the transfer-matrix spectral problem for open integrable chains built from the cyclic (Bazhanov–Stroganov) representations of the trigonometric 6-vertex Yang–Baxter algebra at roots of unity: paper I (SciPost Phys. 2, 009 (2017)) treats one triangular boundary matrix, and paper II (SciPost Phys. 5, 026 (2018)) extends the separation-of-variables solution to the most general integrable boundary conditions via a gauge transformation, characterizing the spectrum by a discrete system and an inhomogeneous Baxter – equation. This task concerns the following open directions: (i) the explicit construction of a Q-operator for the cyclic representations of the 6-vertex reflection algebra, whose eigenvalues reproduce the polynomial of the inhomogeneous – equation and which is expected to connect the open cyclic 6-vertex transfer matrices to chiral Potts transfer matrices; (ii) the classification of the exceptional parameter loci excluded from the almost-all-parameters theorems, where pseudo-diagonalizability or the generic degree of may fail; and (iii) the constructive computation of local-operator form factors and correlation functions from the determinant scalar-product formulae, including the homogeneous and thermodynamic limits, notably for the lattice sine-Gordon reductions.
Background
An open integrable quantum spin chain with sites is built from an -matrix solving the Yang–Baxter equation — here the trigonometric 6-vertex -matrix with anisotropy parameter — together with boundary matrices and solving the reflection equations, the boundary analogues of the Yang–Baxter equation that guarantee commutativity of the double-row transfer matrices. The monodromy matrix (a product of Lax operators over the local spaces) generates the Yang–Baxter algebra; after contraction with the boundary matrices one obtains, in Sklyanin's construction, a commuting family of transfer matrices whose logarithmic derivatives give the conserved charges of the open chain. Solving the model means characterizing the complete spectrum of (eigenvalues and eigenstates) and then the dynamics: form factors — matrix elements of local operators between transfer-matrix eigenstates — and correlation functions of local operators.
Most of the literature treats the fundamental spin- representations. This problem concerns instead the -dimensional cyclic representations at roots of unity, , associated with the general Bazhanov–Stroganov (BS) Lax operator (also called the Lax operator): the local quantum spaces carry a -dimensional representation of a Weyl algebra — generated by 'clock' and 'shift' operators , with and — rather than a highest-weight representation, so the Hilbert space has dimension . Models in this class include the -model and, on a special algebraic curve of the representation parameters, the -state chiral Potts model, a -state generalization of the Ising model on the square lattice whose solvability rests on these cyclic representations; special reductions contain the lattice sine-Gordon model, a lattice discretization of the relativistic sine-Gordon field theory. Because these representations admit no reference state, the algebraic Bethe ansatz does not apply, and Maillet–Niccoli–Pezelier (MNP) developed instead Sklyanin's separation of variables (SoV).
In the SoV method one diagonalizes a co-actor of the (gauged) monodromy — here the boundary operator , an entry of the double-row (boundary) monodromy matrix that generates the reflection algebra. MNP prove that (after the gauge transformation of paper II for general boundaries) is pseudo-diagonalizable with simple spectrum for almost all boundary, bulk and gauge parameter values — pseudo-diagonalizable meaning that the operator acts diagonally on the separated quantum numbers up to a multiplicative shift of one remaining label, — which produces a separated basis of states. In this basis the transfer-matrix eigenvectors are 'separate states' with factorized wavefunctions, and scalar products of separate states admit determinant formulae. The spectrum is characterized by a discrete system of second-order difference equations and equivalently by an inhomogeneous Baxter – equation of the schematic form where is an eigenvalue of , is a polynomial of degree in (equivalently a symmetric Laurent polynomial in ), and is an explicit inhomogeneous term that vanishes only under additional boundary constraints.
Baxter's Q-operator is an operator-level counterpart of this equation: a family commuting with the transfer matrix whose eigenvalues are precisely the polynomials ; standard constructions realize it as the trace of a monodromy matrix over an auxiliary representation of (a Borel subalgebra of) the quantum affine algebra — the subalgebra generated by one half of its current generators — or as a spectral determinant in SoV. In the periodic case this structure is well understood at roots of unity: the chiral Potts transfer matrix acts as the Q-operator of the cyclic 6-vertex chain (Roan 2007), the Q-operator was reconstructed from SoV for cyclic representations (Niccoli 2010), and explicit Q-operators satisfying – relations were recently built from semi-cyclic representations (Miao–Lamers–Pasquier 2021) and from finite-dimensional cyclic representations of the Borel subalgebra (Weston 2026). For open chains, Q-operators have been constructed only at generic , from infinite-dimensional representations (Frassek–Szécsényi 2015; Baseilhac–Tsuboi 2018; Cooper–Vlaar–Weston 2024). For the open-boundary root-of-unity (cyclic) case no construction is known — a situation described by Weston (2026) as an explicit barrier and target of current research.
Problem Statement
Complete the exact solution of the open-boundary cyclic 6-vertex (Bazhanov–Stroganov) models of Maillet–Niccoli–Pezelier beyond their generic-parameter spectral characterization, along the three directions its authors left open. The three directions are independently resolvable sub-objectives: an explicit operator construction with the operatorial – proof resolves (1), a classification of the excluded loci with the extension of the spectral characterization resolves (2), and a form-factor and correlation-function computation resolves (3); the overall objective is complete only when all three are resolved. These three components share one objective — the full structural and dynamical solution of the open cyclic chains — and are linked: the Q-operator is the operator-level form of the inhomogeneous – spectral equation, the exceptional loci are the parameter regimes where that equation's generic degree and the SoV diagonalizability underlying it are unproven, and the correlation functions are the physical output of the same SoV framework whose scalar-product formulae are already available.
(1) Construct explicitly a Q-operator for the cyclic representations of the 6-vertex reflection algebra: a commuting family with — for example, the trace of a monodromy matrix over an auxiliary representation satisfying the relevant reflection equations for the cyclic Bazhanov–Stroganov Lax operators, or a spectral determinant in the SoV framework — whose eigenvalues on the separated basis reproduce the polynomial of the MNP inhomogeneous Baxter – equation, and prove the corresponding operatorial – relation, including the explicit inhomogeneous term and the polynomial class of degree in . Such a construction is expected to lead to new connections with transfer matrices of exactly solvable models of non-6-vertex type, such as the chiral Potts transfer matrices.
(2) Classify the exceptional loci in the boundary–bulk–gauge parameter space (and the special choices of the eigenvalue ) that are excluded from the almost-all-parameters theorems of MNP II — pseudo-diagonalizability and simplicity of the gauged (Theorem 3.1), diagonalizability and simple spectrum of (Theorem 4.1, Proposition 5.1), and characterization by the inhomogeneous – equation with (Theorem 5.1) — and extend the spectral characterization to these loci, including the cases where the degree of drops or the supplementary condition on fails.
(3) From the determinant scalar-product formulae for separate states, develop the constructive computation of form factors of local operators and correlation functions of the cyclic open chains: reconstruct the local operators in the separated variables, identify the ground state, perform the homogeneous limit (coincident inhomogeneities) and the thermodynamic limit , and extract explicit correlation functions, including for the lattice sine-Gordon reductions.
