The elliptic Calogero-Inozemtsev model of type - particles on a torus interacting through Weierstrass -potentials at and mirror images , with one-body reflection terms at the half-periods and five complex couplings - admits an -matrix-valued generalization of Takasaki's Lax pair built from the elliptic Shibukawa-Ueno -operator and Komori-Hikami -operators satisfying an associative reflection equation. Freezing this Lax pair at a classical equilibrium yields a proposed quantum long-range spin chain of type with fully anisotropic (XYZ, eight-vertex) interactions on spin-1/2 sites. The open problem posed in the source concerns this frozen chain: its integrability - a complete commuting family of conserved operators, commuting transfer matrices, or a Bethe-type solution - is conjectured but unproven, the quantum Lax relation being structural evidence rather than proof. The equilibrium positions at which the freezing is performed solve transcendental equilibrium equations and are unknown for arbitrary couplings (only an implicit characterization via zeros of Heun-equation solutions exists), so the chain cannot be explicitly instantiated in general. The problem is to prove or refute integrability of the frozen elliptic XYZ chain.
Background
Integrable many-body systems of Calogero-Moser type describe particles on a line or circle whose pairwise interaction is an inverse-square potential. In the elliptic version the positions live on the torus , , and the interaction is the Weierstrass -function, the doubly periodic meromorphic function with a double pole at the origin. The elliptic Calogero-Moser model corresponds to the root system . Its analogue, introduced by Inozemtsev, keeps the pair potential and adds mirror terms together with one-body terms at the half-periods , , , :
with five arbitrary complex couplings . Like all Calogero-Moser systems it is integrable and admits a Lax representation: the equations of motion are equivalent to a matrix equation with spectral parameter , so that the invariants of , in particular the coefficients of the spectral curve, are conserved. For the Inozemtsev model a Lax pair is due to Takasaki.
A newer development replaces the scalar entries of by -matrices. An -matrix is a solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation acting on a tensor product; the relevant elliptic one is the Baxter-Belavin -matrix, or, in an infinite-dimensional form acting on functions of variables, the completely -symmetric Shibukawa-Ueno -operator. The key algebraic input is the associative Yang-Baxter equation (AYBE), a cubic relation for an -matrix depending on two pairs of parameters (a spectral parameter and a Planck constant) which makes products of -operators associative. R-matrix-valued Lax pairs built on it, with entries given by -operators evaluated at particle differences, were introduced by Levin-Olshanetsky-Zotov and developed by Grekov-Zotov and Sechin-Zotov, who derived from them, by a freezing trick, anisotropic (XYZ-type) long-range spin chains of -type.
The freezing trick, due to Polychronakos, turns a quantum spin many-body Hamiltonian into a quantum spin chain by evaluating it at a classical equilibrium of the spinless classical model: at , with an equilibrium, the (quantum) Lax equation collapses to a relation among the restricted matrices, and the restricted Hamiltonian becomes the Hamiltonian of a spin chain with long-range, all-to-all interactions at the fixed sites . The Haldane-Shastry chain, the paradigmatic integrable long-range spin chain with inverse-square interactions, is the rational/trigonometric ancestor of this family. Applied to the elliptic Calogero-Moser model, freezing gives Inozemtsev's elliptic spin chain; applied to -matrix-valued -type Lax pairs it gives the anisotropic Sechin-Zotov chain; the elliptic -deformed Haldane-Shastry-type chain of Matushko-Zotov arises likewise from elliptic spin Ruijsenaars-Macdonald operators, whose commutativity was proven from -matrix identities.
The source of this problem (Matushko-Mostovskii-Zotov) extends the whole construction to . It extends Kirillov's -type associative Yang-Baxter equations to relations depending on spectral parameters and Planck constants, builds an -matrix-valued version of Takasaki's Lax pair from the Shibukawa-Ueno -operator together with elliptic -operators of Komori-Hikami satisfying a reflection equation (Sklyanin's boundary formalism augments an -matrix with a boundary matrix so that integrable models with boundaries can be built), and, via the Felder-Pasquier construction, rewrites the answer through Baxter's eight-vertex -matrix, giving an explicit (spin-1/2) realization. Freezing at an equilibrium then proposes a elliptic XYZ long-range spin chain: a Hamiltonian on with two-body anisotropic couplings (; the identity, the Pauli matrices) built from the Kronecker elliptic function and the Eisenstein-Kronecker series evaluated at and half-period shifts, plus one-site anisotropic terms with coefficients .
Two facts delimit the open problem. First, the equilibrium positions needed to instantiate the frozen chain are not known in general: for the -type elliptic model the equally spaced points are equilibria by symmetry, but for with five couplings the equilibrium equations form a transcendental system whose general solution is unknown; the classical theory of Treibich-Verdier potentials (Gesztesy-Weikard) identifies the with zeros of solutions of the Heun equation in elliptic form, an implicit characterization only. Second, integrability of the frozen chain is conjectural: the frozen Lax matrices satisfy a quantum Lax equation , which is structural evidence, but, as the authors emphasize, the existence of a Lax equation is not sufficient for integrability. For comparison, the -type -matrix chain was recently proven integrable by Chalykh-Matushko using -matrix Dunkl operators (Dunkl operators are difference-differential operators that permute variables and encode root-system symmetries; suitable symmetric combinations of them commute), and the isotropic Inozemtsev chain was proven integrable by Chalykh via elliptic Dunkl operators; no analogous construction exists so far for the -matrix-valued case with reflection.
Problem Statement
The problem, as posed in the concluding section of Matushko-Mostovskii-Zotov (arXiv:2503.22659, published in Letters in Mathematical Physics, 2026), is to establish the proposed elliptic XYZ long-range spin chain as a quantum integrable model.
The chain is obtained by freezing the -matrix-valued Takasaki Lax pair of the Calogero-Inozemtsev system at a classical equilibrium position. For the classical Hamiltonian displayed in the Background, on a fixed elliptic curve and with five arbitrary complex couplings , the sites are the positions of an equilibrium (with ) solving
As the source notes, these equilibrium positions are unknown in the general case to the best of the authors' knowledge; it is known that the coincide with positions of zeros of solutions to the Heun equation in elliptic form, an implicit characterization.
The problem is to prove or refute the conjecture that the quantum spin chain obtained by freezing the -matrix-valued Takasaki Lax pair at such an equilibrium position is integrable. Concretely, the chain acts on with Hamiltonian equal to eq. (7.5) of the source: two-body terms and anisotropic terms , plus one-site terms , where are the Eisenstein-Kronecker series and the half-period-shifted Kronecker function, in the conventions of the source. Integrability means the existence of a complete set of mutually commuting, independent conserved operators containing this Hamiltonian; mechanisms through which such a family might be constructed include commuting transfer matrices for the chain with boundaries, a Bethe-ansatz solution of its spectrum, or a Dunkl/Cherednik-type operator construction whose freezing yields the commuting charges. The conjecture is for arbitrary and arbitrary five couplings, with the chain defined, as in the source, at some equilibrium position satisfying the equilibrium equations above; the quantum Lax equation satisfied by the frozen Lax matrices is evidence, not proof, and settling the conjecture requires the commutativity (or its failure) to be established.
Because the equilibrium positions are unknown for general couplings, the frozen Hamiltonian cannot be concretely instantiated in general, and without a commuting family the chain remains a proposal supported only by a quantum Lax relation; establishing, or refuting, its integrability is the open question posed by the source.
