Conjugating a Yang-Baxter-integrable lattice model by a matrix-product operator (MPO) with an exact MPO inverse yields a dual model with commuting transfer matrices, but the local integrable structure is generically deformed: the dual Lax operators satisfy only a modified RLL relation whose right-hand side carries nilpotent obstruction tensors built from the MPO's virtual-space data. The source work proved that these obstruction tensors vanish only in the trivial bond-dimension-one case, and verified by explicit computation that the contraction obstructions do not vanish generically for the XXZ chain dressed by the cluster entangler, leaving open whether any subtler mechanism restores the ordinary RLL relation. The problem is to determine, for MPOs with exact inverse and bond dimension greater than one, whether and how the dual model can satisfy an ordinary RLL relation - through cancellations in the contraction of the Lax operators with the obstruction tensors, boundary or virtual-termination choices, or special MPO classes such as dual-unitary matrix-product unitaries - to classify the MPOs with this property, and to identify the algebraic and symmetry constraints (virtual symmetry charges of the nilpotent part, charge-pump data) that enforce or forbid it.

Background

A one-dimensional quantum lattice model is conventionally called Yang-Baxter integrable when it possesses a family of commuting transfer matrices t(u)t(u) built from a Lax operator L(u)L(u): a local tensor acting on one physical site and on an auxiliary vector space, carrying a complex spectral parameter uu. Commutativity [t(u),t(v)]=0[t(u),t(v)]=0 follows from a local intertwining (RLL) relation if there is an R-matrix R(u,v)R(u,v) with

R12(u,v) L1(u) L2(v)=L2(v) L1(u) R12(u,v),R_{12}(u,v)\,L_1(u)\,L_2(v)=L_2(v)\,L_1(u)\,R_{12}(u,v),

where subscripts label auxiliary spaces; the R-matrix must itself solve the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE), the consistency condition for the intertwining to compose consistently across three sites. Tracing a product of Lax operators around a periodic chain (the 'train argument') then yields the conserved charges, including the Hamiltonian.

Matrix-product operators (MPOs) are the operator analogue of matrix-product states: a chain operator obtained by contracting a single rank-four tensor AA along a virtual (bond) index of dimension χ\chi, the bond dimension. Beyond serving as transfer matrices, MPOs act as transformations between lattice models: applying an MPO sandwich to a Hamiltonian produces a dual model with identical spectrum. Two classes matter here. First, MPOs with an exact MPO inverse: there is a second tensor BB such that the alternating contraction of AA's and BB's over any number of sites equals the identity; invertible finite-depth unitary circuits (matrix-product unitaries, MPUs) are the special case with BB related to A†A^\dagger, the Clifford group - the gate set generated by Hadamard, phase, and controlled-Z (CZ) gates that maps Pauli operators to Pauli operators - being the canonical example. Second, non-invertible MPOs implementing discrete gauging, with the Kramers-Wannier (KW) duality of the transverse-field Ising model as the prototype; Lootens, Delcamp and Verstraete analyzed such MPO dualities and their topological sectors. A central example of the first class is the cluster entangler Uc=∏jCZj,j+1U_c=\prod_j CZ_{j,j+1}, a depth-one circuit with χ=2\chi=2; it is the entangler (finite-depth circuit preparing the phase from a trivial product state) for the symmetry-protected topological (SPT) cluster phase, and conjugating the spin-12\frac{1}{2} XXZ chain (the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain) by it produces the dual model HZXXZH_{ZXXZ}.

The source paper asks how the local Yang-Baxter structure transforms under such MPO dualities. For the baxterisation route - building transfer matrices from local two-site Rˇ\check R-matrices, the operators Rˇ=PR\check R = P R obtained by composing the R-matrix with the swap PP of the two spaces - the duality acts simply and integrability is transparently preserved. For the RLL route, generically neither the R-matrix nor the local RLL equation is preserved. The analysis is controlled by the A-B transfer matrix, the map on the virtual space obtained by contracting the alternating AA/BB chain. Its dominant (Perron-Frobenius) eigenvectors ∣vR⟩|v_R\rangle and ⟨vL∣\langle v_L| with eigenvalue 11, together with the nilpotent remainder NN of its Jordan decomposition (nilpotency length n0n_0, the largest power with Nn0≠0N^{n_0}\neq0, so that Nn0+1=0N^{n_0+1}=0; physical sites can be blocked, i.e. grouped into supersites, so that n0=1n_0=1, the minimal case with N≠0N\neq0 but N2=0N^2=0), organize all obstructions. The canonical extended R-matrix R~(u,v)=∣vR⟩ R(u,v) ⟨vL∣\tilde R(u,v)=|v_R\rangle\,R(u,v)\,\langle v_L| satisfies the YBE and intertwines the dual Lax operators L~(u)\tilde L(u) - obtained by replacing each physical leg of L(u)L(u) with the B⋯L⋯AB\cdots L\cdots A sandwich - but only up to nilpotent obstruction tensors N~R=N∣vR⟩\tilde N_R=N|v_R\rangle and N~L=⟨vL∣N\tilde N_L=\langle v_L|N appearing on the right-hand side of the modified RLL relation (Eq. (112) of arXiv:2602.17436v2). Since R~\tilde R factors through the projector onto the dominant eigenspace of the A-B transfer matrix, it is structurally non-invertible; it admits only a pseudo-inverse. A modified Yang-Baxter algebra of this type was first identified for MPU transformations in the study of Clifford-group actions on integrable chains by Jones and Linden, and the source paper generalized it to arbitrary MPOs with exact inverse, proving along the way that logarithmic derivatives of the dual transfer matrices remain local (of range at most 2n0+12n_0+1).

The obstruction is not merely technical. The nilpotent virtual data carries the charge-pump physics of the MPO transformation: for the cluster entangler, different boundary terminations of the virtual space produce either the identity or a pump of Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 charge across the chain, and the charged operator is exactly what obstructs the local RLL relation; this connects to the general theory of charge pumps and pivot Hamiltonians of Jones, Thorngren, Verresen and Prakash. Understanding when an ordinary RLL relation survives an MPO duality is the gateway to constructing genuinely new medium-range integrable models (interactions beyond nearest neighbor, in the sense of Gombor and Pozsgay) from nearest-neighbor ones by MPO transformation, and to tracing how the quantum-group structure underlying integrability - the deformed symmetry algebra from whose representation theory R-matrices are systematically derived - transforms under duality; both are flagged as open in the source's outlook, which also names the dual-unitary circuits of Piroli, Bertini, Cirac and Prosen (unitary along both the time direction and the spatial direction) as a class worth exploring. Parallel recent developments nearby include: KW-type dualities and gauging realized as MPOs with topological sectors; non-invertible duality defects connecting the XXZ chain to an integrable Rydberg-blockade ladder (Eck and Fendley); systematic construction of duality operators from integrability data (Zhu); non-local non-regular R-matrices for the critical Ising chain (Sinha, Justin, Padmanabhan and Korepin); and 'unbalanced' Yang-Baxter/RLL relations for Onsager-algebra structures (the commutator algebra underlying Onsager's exact solution of the Ising model) at roots of unity (Vernier, Miao and Yamazaki). None of these analyzes when the modified RLL reduces to the ordinary one.

Problem Statement

Setup. Let a periodic chain carry a Yang-Baxter-integrable model given by a Lax operator L(u)L(u) and an R-matrix R(u,v)R(u,v) satisfying the ordinary RLL relation

R12(u,v) L1(u) L2(v)=L2(v) L1(u) R12(u,v).R_{12}(u,v)\,L_1(u)\,L_2(v)=L_2(v)\,L_1(u)\,R_{12}(u,v).

Let UU be an MPO with an exact MPO inverse, built from a tensor AA of virtual bond dimension χ>1\chi>1 with inverse tensor BB, and let L~(u)\tilde L(u) be the dual Lax operators obtained from the B⋯L(u)⋯AB\cdots L(u)\cdots A sandwich. Let R~(u,v)=∣vR⟩ R(u,v) ⟨vL∣\tilde R(u,v)=|v_R\rangle\,R(u,v)\,\langle v_L| be the canonical extended R-matrix determined by the dominant eigenvectors of the A-B transfer matrix, let NN be the nilpotent part of that transfer matrix's Jordan decomposition, and let N~L=⟨vL∣N\tilde N_L=\langle v_L|N and N~R=N∣vR⟩\tilde N_R=N|v_R\rangle be the nilpotent obstruction tensors; the modified RLL relation states that R~\tilde R intertwines the L~\tilde L up to right-hand-side obstruction terms built from the contractions of the Lax operators with N~L/R\tilde N_{L/R} (Eq. (112) of arXiv:2602.17436v2).

Problem. Determine whether, beyond the trivial on-site case, the dual model can satisfy an ordinary RLL relation at all: does there exist an R-matrix R(u,v)\mathcal R(u,v) - either an invertible intertwiner of the dual Lax operators, or the canonical extended R~\tilde R itself with vanishing right-hand-side obstruction - such that

R12(u,v) L~1(u) L~2(v)=L~2(v) L~1(u) R12(u,v)\mathcal R_{12}(u,v)\,\tilde L_1(u)\,\tilde L_2(v)=\tilde L_2(v)\,\tilde L_1(u)\,\mathcal R_{12}(u,v)

holds identically in the spectral parameters? The overarching objective is a complete characterization, with three linked deliverables:

  1. Mechanisms. Characterize all mechanisms by which the right-hand side of the modified RLL relation can vanish for χ>1\chi>1: direct vanishing of N~L/R\tilde N_{L/R} (already excluded by Result 4 of the source, which forces χ=1\chi=1), cancellations inside the contractions of the Lax operators with N~L/R\tilde N_{L/R}, choices of boundary conditions or virtual-space terminations (open versus periodic chains, boundary tensors on the virtual bonds), or special structure of the MPO such as dual unitarity (matrix-product unitaries that are unitary along both the physical time direction and the spatial direction).

  2. Classification. Classify the MPOs with exact inverse and χ>1\chi>1, up to the natural equivalences (blocking, i.e. grouping consecutive sites into supersites; on-site factors; shifts), for which the dual model admits such an ordinary RLL relation; if no nontrivial MPO admits it, prove that impossibility.

  3. Constraints. Identify the algebraic and symmetry constraints that enforce or forbid the reduction of the modified RLL relation to the ordinary one: the role of the virtual symmetry charges of the nilpotent tensor NN, the nilpotency length n0n_0, and the charge-pump/SPT data of the transformation, in line with the source's observation that SPT entanglers typically carry a symmetry charge that obstructs the local RLL relation.

A complete answer is a characterization theorem for the class of MPOs (the class may be empty, which must then be proved), together with the constraint dictionary of part 3; every nonempty class claimed must be exhibited by an explicit witness - the MPO tensors, the dual Lax operator, and the R-matrix with the ordinary RLL identities verified. The treatment of boundary conditions and virtual terminations must be part of the stated characterization rather than left implicit.
