The decoration (decoration-iteration) transformation integrates out decorating spins of a decorated lattice to obtain an exactly equivalent effective lattice with renormalized couplings, and underlies many exact solutions of classical Ising-type and commuting Ising-Heisenberg models. Braz, Rodrigues, de Souza and Rojas (Annals of Physics 372, 523 (2016)) constructed an exact quantum decoration transformation at the level of a single decorated block, but showed that composing it over a lattice fails for non-commuting (Heisenberg-type) models: by the Zassenhaus formula the total Boltzmann operator is not the product of block operators, and commutator corrections generate three-site and longer-range couplings, so no exact local effective Hamiltonian results. Their approximate applications are valid only in weak-coupling or quasi-Ising limits and miss the zero-temperature transition of the bond-alternating Ising-XXZ chain. The open problem is to develop the quantum decoration transformation into an exact or rigorously controlled lattice-scale equivalence for genuinely quantum spin models: a no-go or classification theorem for exactly mappable non-commuting models, an all-orders classification of models whose commutator corrections vanish, rigorous error bounds for truncation schemes valid beyond weak coupling including zero-temperature criticality, and the symmetry-lifting block mappings (such as an XY decorated block mapping to an XYZ effective block) deferred by the source.
Background
In classical lattice statistics, a decorated lattice is one in which extra (decorating) spins are placed on the bonds or faces of a simpler lattice. The decoration transformation (also called the decoration-iteration transformation, introduced by M. E. Fisher, Phys. Rev. 113, 969 (1959), and by I. Syozi) sums out the decorating spins and replaces each decorated bond by an effective bond with renormalized, temperature-dependent couplings, giving an exact equivalence between the decorated model and an effective model on the simpler lattice. Together with the related star-triangle transformation (which eliminates a spin shared by three bonds by introducing direct couplings among its three neighbors), it underlies a family of exact solutions, for example of the Ising model on the kagomé lattice (a lattice of corner-sharing triangles) and other decorated planar lattices.
The same idea works exactly for a class of quantum spin models provided all local terms commute. In Ising-Heisenberg hybrid models, nodal spins interact with Heisenberg dimers (pairs of spins coupled by full quantum exchange) only through commuting z-components, so the partition function factorizes over blocks and tracing out each dimer yields an exact effective Ising model. This observation produced a large literature of exactly solved frustrated chains and planes.
Braz, Rodrigues, de Souza and Rojas (Ann. Phys. 372, 523 (2016)) asked what survives when the decorated blocks are genuinely quantum and non-commuting, as in Heisenberg-type models (the XXZ chain has exchange with anisotropy in z; the XYZ model has fully anisotropic exchange; XXX is the isotropic Heisenberg model). They constructed an exact block-level quantum decoration transformation: the Boltzmann operator of a single decorated block (a three-spin chain segment, or a three-leg star with a central decorating spin, at inverse temperature ) is traced over the decorating spin and matched to the Boltzmann operator of an effective two-spin (or three-spin) Hamiltonian through exact relations between the block eigenvalues. The mapping is exact for one block and exhibits symmetry preservation (XXX mapped to XXX at zero field) and symmetry breaking (XXX mapped to XXZ in a field; an XY block maps only to a more general XYZ block).
The obstruction appears when the transformation is composed over a lattice. Writing the full Hamiltonian as a sum of blocks sharing sites, the total Boltzmann operator is , which is not the product when the blocks do not commute. The discrepancy is governed by the Zassenhaus formula, the dual of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula: , where are Lie polynomials in nested commutators of and . The corrections begin at order and couple three or more sites, i.e. they act as next-nearest-neighbor and longer-range couplings on the effective lattice. Keeping them destroys the simple local structure that the decoration transformation is meant to exploit; discarding them makes the lattice-level mapping approximate. For bilinear Heisenberg-type models the and corrections were found to vanish (the third-order term because the spin operators are traceless), but this was verified only to those orders, and non-bilinear Hamiltonians can acquire nonzero corrections.
Two applications quantify the accuracy: for a finite spin-1/2 XXZ chain the effective-lattice free energy agrees with exact diagonalization (numerically exact finite-size eigenvalue computation) only for weak xy anisotropy (small ); and for the bond-alternating Ising-XXZ chain (alternating Ising bonds of strength and XXZ bonds , a model going back to Lieb, Schultz and Mattis), the result is accurate only in the quasi-Ising limit (flip terms negligible) and fails to detect the zero-temperature transition at , whose location is in fact known from exact spectral analyses of the alternating chain available in the literature. What is missing is an exact, or provably controlled, lattice-scale version of the transformation for non-commuting models.
Problem Statement
For a quantum spin lattice model written as a sum of decorated blocks that share sites and do not commute, (each block coupling a decorating spin to two or more external spins by Heisenberg/XXZ-type exchange), the block-level quantum decoration transformation of Braz et al. is exact, but its lattice-level composition fails by the Zassenhaus commutator corrections, which generate three-site and longer-range couplings. Develop this transformation into an exact or provably controlled lattice-scale equivalence between quantum spin models. Concretely:
-
Exactness or no-go: determine for which classes of non-commuting quantum decorated lattice models there exists an exact local effective Hamiltonian on the coarse lattice (nearest-neighbor) such that the partition functions agree exactly for all inverse temperatures and all lattice sizes — or prove a rigorous no-go identifying the obstruction.
-
Classification: classify Hamiltonian classes (bilinear versus non-bilinear, and by symmetry class) for which the Zassenhaus correction terms vanish identically at each order in , and identify the lowest order at which nonzero corrections first appear for each class. The currently known vanishing of the and terms for bilinear Heisenberg models is established only to those orders and does not settle the classification.
-
Controlled truncation with error bounds: construct a renormalization or truncation prescription for the commutator-generated three-site and longer-range couplings, with rigorous error bounds on thermodynamic quantities and observables as explicit functions of temperature, coupling strengths, truncation order, and system size, valid beyond the quasi-Ising and weak- limits, extending for example to zero-temperature quantum critical behavior such as the transition of the bond-alternating Ising-XXZ chain that the small- approximation misses.
-
Symmetry-lifting mappings: complete the deferred block-level mappings in which a decorated block of one symmetry class maps onto an effective block of lower symmetry, such as an XY decorated block mapping onto an XYZ effective block, including the exact matching relations and a statement of which symmetry classes admit such mappings.
These four deliverables serve one common objective: an exact, or provably controlled, lattice-scale extension of the quantum decoration transformation to genuinely quantum (non-commuting) spin models. An answer may resolve any subset of these facets, but claims of exactness or of rigorous control must hold for the stated model classes and parameter regimes without narrowing to the commuting Ising-Heisenberg cases, which are already exactly solved.
