For the periodic spin-1/2 XYZ Heisenberg chain, whose transfer matrix is built from the elliptic eight-vertex R-matrix, the generalized algebraic Bethe ansatz (gABA) constructs on-shell Bethe eigenstates without using a pseudovacuum. Within this framework, form factors of local spin operators are known in closed form only in the free-fermion limit (anisotropy , the XY chain) and only for singlet, twin-free eigenstates: the scalar products of Bethe vectors carrying different numbers of Bethe parameters (imbalanced scalar products), to which such form factors reduce, have explicit representations only in that limit, although a cascade linear system determining them at arbitrary rational anisotropy has been derived. The open problem is to solve this linear system in explicit closed form at arbitrary rational , and thereby to compute explicit form factors of the local operators between generic on-shell Bethe eigenstates of the periodic XYZ chain, including eigenstates containing twin roots (pairs of Bethe roots differing by ), for which no treatment currently exists.
Background
The spin-1/2 XYZ Heisenberg chain is the periodic spin model with Hamiltonian and generically anisotropic couplings; it is the lattice model associated with Baxter's eight-vertex (8-vertex) model and the archetypal elliptic integrable system. Its integrability is described by the quantum inverse scattering method: the monodromy matrix , a product of 8-vertex -matrices coupling an auxiliary two-dimensional space to the chain sites, has entries , and the transfer matrix generates a commuting family of conserved charges containing the Hamiltonian; the complex parameters are inhomogeneities that may be set to zero at the end. The 8-vertex -matrix is elliptic: it is built from Jacobi theta functions and depends on an anisotropy parameter and a half-period ratio with , the couplings being the theta-function ratios , , .
For models with a 6-vertex -matrix, such as the XXZ chain, the algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA) diagonalizes starting from a pseudovacuum, a simple reference state annihilated by the off-diagonal monodromy entries; Bethe vectors are produced by repeated action of at Bethe parameters and are called on-shell when these parameters solve the Bethe equations. In that setting, scalar products of Bethe vectors in which one vector is on-shell have Slavnov's determinant representation, and the quantum inverse problem — expressing every local spin operator through monodromy-matrix entries — reduces form factors of local operators (matrix elements between eigenstates, divided by the norm of one of the two states in the one-sided normalization convention of Kulkarni–Slavnov) to finite sums of scalar products. This chain of results underlies the exact form-factor expansions of correlation functions for 6-vertex-type chains (Kitanine–Maillet–Terras; Göhmann–Korepin).
The 8-vertex -matrix contains a nonzero entry coupling the auxiliary states and , so no simple reference state is an eigenstate of and : the standard ABA fails, and the XYZ chain requires the generalized algebraic Bethe ansatz (gABA). In the gABA used by Slavnov–Zabrodin–Zotov and by Kulkarni–Slavnov, on-shell Bethe vectors are labeled by roots of Bethe equations involving an elliptic polynomial , with an integer labeling the quasi-periodicity sector of the transfer matrix; this construction is available at rational anisotropy . At rational the spectrum is degenerate, and the symmetry of under (modulo the period lattice) implies that roots of the Bethe equations occur in pairs: two roots differing by are called twins. Singlet eigenstates (total spin zero, ) can be chosen twin-free.
The gABA route to XYZ form factors is then blocked at scalar products. By the linear-equation method of Belliard–Slavnov, determinant representations were obtained by Slavnov–Zabrodin–Zotov for normalized scalar products at rational anisotropy in which both Bethe vectors carry the same number of parameters (balanced, imbalance ), leaving an undetermined multiplicative prefactor. Kulkarni–Slavnov then derived the action of the monodromy-matrix entries on Bethe vectors (the gABA analogue of the 6-vertex action formulas) and showed that form factors of local operators reduce to scalar products with imbalance , the cases being imbalanced, with the two vectors carrying different numbers of Bethe parameters. Explicit representations for these imbalanced scalar products were obtained only in the free-fermion limit (where and the chain becomes the XY model) and only for singlet states; on this basis Kulkarni–Slavnov computed explicit form factors of for twin-free singlet on-shell Bethe vectors at . At arbitrary rational , a cascade linear system determining the imbalanced scalar products was derived, but its explicit solution — and the treatment of eigenstates containing twins — was left open by the authors for future work.
Problem Statement
Extend the generalized-algebraic-Bethe-ansatz computation of form factors of local operators from the free-fermion singlet sector to the general XYZ chain. Specifically, for the inhomogeneous periodic spin-1/2 XYZ chain (8-vertex -matrix with anisotropy and half-period ratio , ):
-
Solve, in explicit closed form suitable for computation (for example as determinants or finite sums of determinants of explicitly known theta-function matrices), the cascade system of linear equations for scalar products of Bethe vectors at arbitrary rational anisotropy — in particular for imbalanced scalar products with , in which the two Bethe vectors depend on different numbers of Bethe parameters. This includes establishing that the homogeneous part of the cascade system admits only trivial solutions (a step currently only conjectured).
-
Combining these scalar products with the known gABA action formulas for the monodromy-matrix entries and with the solution of the quantum inverse problem, produce explicit form factors of the local spin operators between generic on-shell Bethe eigenstates of the periodic XYZ chain — beyond the free-fermion limit and beyond the singlet, twin-free sector. The formulas must reduce, at for singlet states, to the representations already published by Kulkarni and Slavnov.
-
Develop the separate treatment required by eigenstates containing twins (pairs of Bethe roots differing by ), for which the existing formulas are not valid, and derive explicit form factors for such twin-containing states.
These three deliverables serve one objective: making the gABA route from Bethe states to local-operator matrix elements — and hence to form-factor expansions of XYZ correlation functions — available for the general XYZ chain rather than only its free-fermion/singlet sector. Extending the linear-system method itself beyond rational anisotropy (for instance to finite-order points ) is a further direction of the same program but lies outside the problem as stated by the source.
