The rational integrable spin chains with gl(n|m) supersymmetry are solved by a nested Bethe ansatz, and their thermodynamic-limit description rests on the string hypothesis - the assumption, known to fail in its strong form, that Bethe roots organize into regular complexes (strings and supersymmetric stacks). Volin (2012) showed that under the unproven weak form of this hypothesis the thermodynamic-limit equations take a remarkably symmetric particle/hole-democratic form, equivalent to Y-system/Hirota equations on hook-shaped domains including the T-hook of the AdS5/CFT4 spectral problem, and listed the construction's open issues. The T-hook bijection with unitary highest-weight representations was settled by the complete unitary dual of su(p,q|m) (Günaydin-Volin 2019), and the finite-coupling AdS/CFT modification was superseded by the quantum spectral curve program. The surviving open core is the foundation itself: no constructive or rigorous proof exists that the weak string hypothesis holds for gl(n|m) chains. The problem therefore asks for a rigorous justification of the weak string hypothesis for the covered class of chains, from which the symmetric functional equations and the hook-domain Y-systems follow as theorems. The source also records that the hypothesis as formulated fails for alternating supersymmetric chains and expresses the hope that a reduced form of its analysis might still be useful there; that extension remains untested background context rather than part of the open core.

Background

An integrable rational spin chain with gl(n∣m)\mathfrak{gl}(n|m) symmetry is a one-dimensional quantum lattice model whose local states carry representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(n∣m)\mathfrak{gl}(n|m), the algebra of linear maps on a Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-graded vector space with nn even and mm odd basis directions (m=0m=0 recovers the ordinary gl(n)\mathfrak{gl}(n) case). The rational, XXX-type chains of this family are exactly solvable: the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz reduces the spectral problem to a coupled system of algebraic Bethe equations for several sets of complex rapidities, one set per node of a chosen Kac-Dynkin diagram (the Dynkin diagram of the symmetry algebra, with fermionic nodes marked). Different diagram choices describe the same spectrum and are related by fermionic duality transformations, which reshuffle roots between adjacent Bethe levels.

Since the earliest exact solutions of the Heisenberg chain it has been understood that in long chains the complex Bethe roots organize into strings: arithmetic complexes u0+iku_0+ik, k=−(s−1)/2,…,(s−1)/2k=-(s-1)/2,\ldots,(s-1)/2, called an s-string. The string hypothesis in its strong form - every solution consists of strings, with root positions exponentially close to the ideal pattern - is false; explicit violations are documented already for ordinary chains (Ilakovac, Kolanović, Pallua and Prester, 1999). Its weak form, as formulated in the source - most Bethe roots are organized into strings with exponential-in-LL precision, and the fraction of solutions of the Bethe equations that differ significantly from these ideal patterns, in the sense of not being approximated by them with exponential-in-LL precision, decreases to zero as the chain length L→∞L\to\infty - is the working assumption behind the standard thermodynamics of Bethe-ansatz-solvable chains: under it, taking the thermodynamic limit (L→∞L\to\infty with the number of roots of each type proportional to LL) turns the Bethe equations into linear integral equations for the densities of string centers. Holes - the positions inside a string pattern at which a root is missing - enter these equations on the same footing as the roots themselves ('particles').

Volin (2012) derived these thermodynamic-limit equations for rational gl(n∣m)\mathfrak{gl}(n|m) chains in highest-weight states whose Kac-Dynkin diagram has a single nonzero Dynkin label. The outcome is a symmetric system of linear functional equations (eqs. (62)/(1) of the paper): convolution kernels acting simultaneously on particle densities ρa,s\rho_{a,s} and hole densities ρa,s∗\rho^{*}_{a,s}, the two-index label {a,s}\{a,s\} typing the excitations. Excitations organize into domains - a strip, a fat hook (an L-shaped domain), or a T-hook (a T-shaped union of two fat hooks) - matching the real form of the symmetry algebra, and the same equations generate the Y-system: bilinear finite-difference (Hirota) relations among the eigenvalues of the transfer matrices (the generating operators of the chain's conserved charges) in antisymmetric rectangular representations. The T-hook Y-system underlies the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz - the finite-temperature framework that reconstructs a model's infinite-volume physics from its own finite-size spectrum - for the planar AdS5_5/CFT4_4 spectral problem, and the construction also reproduces the classic functional-equation structure of the Hubbard model, with supersymmetric stacks (triangles, trapezia, diamonds) generalizing the stack configurations introduced for that model.

The construction rests on two admitted weaknesses, both stated in the source. First, the weak string hypothesis is supported only by a numerical study of 2-strings and by a plausibility argument (exponential growth of one side of the Bethe equations forcing pole compensation); no constructive or rigorous proof exists, even for ordinary chains. Second, the analysis does not apply to alternating supersymmetric spin chains, in which a representation and its dual alternate along the lattice, such as the sl(2∣1)\mathfrak{sl}(2|1) 3⊗3ˉ3\otimes\bar{3} chain of Essler, Frahm and Saleur (2005) or the alternating fundamental-dual gl(M∣N)\mathfrak{gl}(M|N) chains of Candu (2011); their continuum limits develop continuous spectra (of conformal weights or of particle masses), precisely the regime in which a discrete string-pattern description breaks down. The source expresses the hope that a reduced form of its equations might still apply there.

The finite-volume side of the subject has since become rigorous without strings: Chernyak, Leurent and Volin (2022) proved that for rational gl(m∣n)\mathfrak{gl}(m|n) chains the algebra of conserved charges is isomorphic to the algebra of functional relations among Baxter Q-functions (polynomials whose zeros are the Bethe roots; these relations are the Wronskian Bethe equations), with the number of solutions equal to the Hilbert-space dimension. What remains missing is the bridge from finite chains to the thermodynamic limit: a justification of the string hypothesis on which the symmetric functional equations (62) and the hook-domain Y-systems rest; for alternating chains, where the hypothesis as formulated fails, no reduced replacement of these equations has been derived.

Problem Statement

The problem is to give the thermodynamic-limit string-hypothesis description of rational gl(n∣m)\mathfrak{gl}(n|m) supersymmetric spin chains a rigorous foundation.

For rational integrable gl(n∣m)\mathfrak{gl}(n|m) spin chains in highest-weight states whose Kac-Dynkin diagram has a single nonzero Dynkin label, prove or disprove the weak string hypothesis in the formulation of the source: in the thermodynamic limit L→∞L\to\infty (with the numbers of roots on each Bethe level scaled proportionally to LL), most Bethe roots are organized into the ideal string patterns - ordinary strings together with the supersymmetric stacks (triangles, trapezia, diamonds) - with exponential-in-LL precision, and the fraction of solutions of the Bethe equations that differ significantly from these patterns, in the sense of not being approximated by them with exponential-in-LL precision, tends to zero. A proof should turn the derivation of the symmetric particle/hole functional equations (62)/(1) of Volin (2012), including the corner equations (the modified equations at the corner nodes of the hook domains, where the two arms of the hook meet), into a theorem, and with it the derivation of the corresponding Y-system on its strip/fat-hook/T-hook domain; a disproof should show that that fraction fails to tend to zero as L→∞L\to\infty (equivalently, its limit superior as L→∞L\to\infty is positive), by exhibiting an explicit infinite family of physical solutions that constitute a positive fraction of the solutions at infinitely many lengths LL.

The goal concerns the class of chains covered by the source's derivation. The source notes that the string hypothesis as formulated there is not valid for alternating supersymmetric chains - chains in which a representation and its dual alternate along the lattice, such as the sl(2∣1)\mathfrak{sl}(2|1) 3⊗3ˉ3\otimes\bar{3} chain of Essler, Frahm and Saleur and the alternating fundamental-dual gl(M∣N)\mathfrak{gl}(M|N) chains of Candu - and expresses only the hope that a reduced form of its analysis might be useful also for that case; extending the description to such chains is a direction suggested by the source, not part of the completion requirement for this problem.
