The matrix product ansatz (MPA) of Alcaraz and Lazo expresses the components of exact eigenfunctions as traces of products of auxiliary matrices whose algebraic relations are fixed by the eigenvalue equation. It has been established for integrable quantum chains and vertex models possessing a global U(1)-type conservation law, including the six-vertex model with toroidal boundary conditions, whose solution (Lazo, 2007) posed the open problem of extending the construction to integrable models without global conservation laws, above all the eight-vertex model and the associated spin-1/2 XYZ chain. Prior work determines the spectrum (Baxter, 1972) but not standard-basis eigenvectors; separation-of-variables constructions characterize eigenstates only for twisted, odd-periodic, or boundary-constrained cases; the chiral coordinate Bethe ansatz covers invariant subspaces at roots of unity; and recent matrix-product-operator constructions build conserved charges, not eigenvectors. No matrix product ansatz for the eigenvectors of the generic eight-vertex model exists in the literature, and the problem — explicit ansatz matrices and algebra, verification of the eigenvalue equation, and recovery of Baxter's spectral equations at generic couplings — remains open.
Background
An exactly solved two-dimensional lattice model is diagonalized through its row-to-row transfer matrix: the matrix whose element is the total Boltzmann weight of one full row of vertices, so that the partition function is the trace of a power of this matrix. The six-vertex model places arrows on the edges of a square lattice and allows only the six vertex configurations obeying the ice rule (two arrows into and two out of every vertex). Because each allowed vertex conserves the number of arrows pointing along a chosen direction, the model has a global conservation law, and its transfer matrix was diagonalized by the coordinate Bethe ansatz in the 1960s, starting with Lieb's solution of square ice and Sutherland's treatment of the general (asymmetric) six-vertex model. In the coordinate Bethe ansatz, eigenfunction components are sums of plane waves, and the eigenvalue equation fixes their amplitudes. The eight-vertex model of Baxter adds the two vertices in which all four surrounding arrows are reversed; these vertices create or annihilate arrow lines, so no particle-number-like quantity is conserved. Baxter solved this model by introducing the Yang–Baxter equation (the commutativity condition ensuring that transfer matrices at different values of the spectral parameter — the auxiliary complex argument on which the vertex weights depend — commute) and functional TQ relations — functional equations relating a transfer-matrix eigenvalue T to an auxiliary function Q whose zeros give the Bethe-type parameters. This yields the complete spectrum but not explicit eigenvectors in the standard arrow basis. Sutherland showed that the spin-1/2 XYZ chain — the anisotropic Heisenberg chain with three unequal couplings — commutes with the eight-vertex transfer-matrix family, so the two problems are equivalent. The XYZ chain is the standard example of an integrable chain whose Hamiltonian has only a parity symmetry and no U(1) sector; in particular it has no fully polarized reference state (pseudovacuum) from which a Bethe ansatz could be built. The matrix product ansatz is an alternative representation of exact eigenfunctions. In the form introduced by Alcaraz and Lazo for quantum chains — generalizing matrix-product descriptions of the stationary states of stochastic exclusion processes (Stinchcombe and Schütz, 1995) — the components of the eigenfunctions are written as traces of products of auxiliary matrices, and the eigenvalue equation is used not to fix plane-wave amplitudes but to fix the algebraic relations satisfied by these matrices. This MPA was established for a large family of integrable chains with one or two global conservation laws (including the XXZ, Fateev–Zamolodchikov, and Hubbard chains) and led to the conjecture that every model exactly solved by the Bethe ansatz can also be solved by an appropriate MPA. Lazo extended the construction to the row-to-row transfer matrix of the six-vertex model with toroidal boundary conditions, showing that an infinite family of transfer-matrix eigenvectors can be written in MPA form in the thermodynamic limit and reproducing the Bethe-type spectral equations. Katsura and Maruyama later derived the XXX/XXZ matrix product representations from the algebraic Bethe ansatz, showing that the MPA matrices are a repackaging of the Zamolodchikov–Faddeev algebra — the quadratic exchange algebra of the creation operators underlying algebraic Bethe-ansatz wavefunctions. That derivation relies essentially on the existence of a pseudovacuum, i.e. on the U(1) conservation law. The six-vertex MPA is therefore tied to line conservation, and Lazo (2007) identifies the natural open problem: the formulation of the analogous ansatz for integrable models without global conservation laws, of which the eight-vertex model and the XYZ chain are the paradigmatic examples.
Problem Statement
Formulate a matrix product ansatz for the eight-vertex model — equivalently, for the spin-1/2 XYZ chain — following the framework of the six-vertex construction. Concretely, the required deliverables, which jointly constitute one overarching objective (an MPA solution of the eight-vertex model, analogous to Lazo's (2007) MPA solution of the six-vertex model), are: (i) explicit matrices — finite- or infinite-dimensional, with entries that may be elliptic functions of spectral parameters — such that the components of the eigenvectors obtained by the ansatz for the eight-vertex row-to-row transfer matrix with periodic (toroidal) boundary conditions, in the standard arrow/spin basis, are given by traces of products of these matrices; (ii) the algebraic relations satisfied by these matrices, fixed by the transfer-matrix eigenvalue equation, together with a demonstration of their consistency, including compatibility with the cyclic property of the trace (the consistency mechanism of the six-vertex construction); (iii) the spectral-parameter (Bethe-type) equations produced by the ansatz, shown to reproduce Baxter's eigenvalue equations, so that the construction yields an infinite family of eigenvectors in the thermodynamic limit, as the six-vertex MPA does; and (iv) validity at generic (non-root-of-unity) couplings — the ansatz must not be restricted to root-of-unity anisotropies (the discrete set of couplings at which extra spectral degeneracies and invariant subspaces appear), to a single lattice parity, or to a proper invariant subspace, since the target is the analogue for the generic eight-vertex model of the established six-vertex result. An answer may equally be formulated for the XYZ Hamiltonian, whose eigenvectors coincide, via the commuting transfer-matrix family, with those of the eight-vertex transfer matrix. The broader objective, as posed by Lazo (2007), is the extension of the matrix product ansatz to integrable models without global conservation laws, of which the eight-vertex model/XYZ chain is the paradigmatic case; settling this instance is the decisive test of the conjecture that all Bethe-solvable models admit an MPA.
