The staggered six-vertex model - Baxter's inhomogeneous six-vertex model with Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-alternating line rapidities, equivalent to the critical line of the square-lattice antiferromagnetic Potts model - has a non-compact continuum limit: its critical exponents form a continuum, controlled by an effective coupling K(γ,N)K(\gamma,N) that vanishes as N→∞N\to\infty. Ikhlef, Jacobsen and Saleur conjectured that this limit is the SL(2,R)/U(1)SL(2,\mathbb{R})/U(1) Euclidean black-hole conformal field theory, and asked for an analytic derivation of K(γ,N)K(\gamma,N), a rigorous identification of the continuum theory (including subleading spectral-density terms and descendant combinatorics), the effects of boundary conditions, twists and truncations, a quantum-group symmetry interpolating OSP(2∣2)OSP(2|2) and SO(4)SO(4), and higher-spin generalizations. Much of this is now resolved: nonlinear integral equations and the ODE/IQFT correspondence control the logarithmic finite-size corrections and the density of states, and the boundary conditions have been mapped. However, Bazhanov, Kotousov, Koval and Lukyanov showed that the scaling limit carries only a pseudo-Hilbert (indefinite) inner product with central charge c<2c<2, incompatible with the unitary Euclidean black-hole theory, and proposed instead a Lorentzian black-hole / gauged SL(2,R)SL(2,\mathbb{R}) Wess-Zumino-Witten description that they themselves state is tentative. The surviving open problem is the definitive identification of the continuum quantum field theory - its field content, Hilbert and Hermitian structure, extended conformal symmetry algebra, selection rules and partition function - together with the symmetry structure of the lattice model along the critical line.

Background

The six-vertex model assigns arrows to the edges of a square lattice with the 'ice rule' that two arrows enter and two leave every vertex; this leaves six allowed local configurations and makes the model exactly solvable (Yang-Baxter integrable) by the Bethe ansatz, the coordinate-algebraic method for diagonalizing integrable transfer matrices. In its homogeneous critical regime it is the canonical lattice realization of a c=1c=1 compact free-boson conformal field theory. Baxter showed that the critical point of the antiferromagnetic QQ-state Potts model on the square lattice is described by a staggered six-vertex model, in which the spectral parameters ('line rapidities') alternate from line to line - a Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-inhomogeneous but still integrable version of the model. Ikhlef, Jacobsen and Saleur solved this staggered model's Bethe equations numerically for lattice widths up to N∼1000N\sim 1000 and found the finite-size spectrum organized by critical exponents

x=g4(n++n−)2+(m++m−)24g+K(γ,N)4(n+−n−)2+(m+−m−)24K(γ,N),g=2γπ,x = \frac{g}{4}(n_++n_-)^2 + \frac{(m_++m_-)^2}{4g} + \frac{K(\gamma,N)}{4}(n_+-n_-)^2 + \frac{(m_+-m_-)^2}{4K(\gamma,N)},\qquad g=\frac{2\gamma}{\pi},

where γ∈(0,π/2]\gamma\in(0,\pi/2] is the anisotropy and the effective coupling K(γ,N)K(\gamma,N) tends to zero as N→∞N\to\infty (numerically K≃A(γ)/[B(γ)+log⁡N]2K\simeq A(\gamma)/[B(\gamma)+\log N]^2 with A(γ)=5γ/(π−2γ)A(\gamma)=5\gamma/(\pi-2\gamma) conjectured, crossing over to K≃1/log⁡NK\simeq 1/\log N at γ=π/2\gamma=\pi/2). Because K→0K\to 0, the exponents within each sector become dense: the model has a non-compact continuum limit, a continuum rather than a discrete set of critical exponents, with effective central charge (the coefficient of the 1/N1/N ground-state correction) c~→2\tilde c\to 2 - a lattice model with finitely many degrees of freedom per site flowing to a non-compact conformal field theory.

The natural candidate continuum theory is the SL(2,R)/U(1)SL(2,\mathbb{R})/U(1) 'Euclidean black hole' coset conformal field theory (the two-dimensional black hole / cigar sigma model introduced by Witten), whose normalizable states include continuous representations of SL(2,R)SL(2,\mathbb{R}) with a continuous label ss at Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) level kk, and whose torus partition function (Maldacena-Ooguri-Son; Hanany-Prezas-Troost) requires an infrared regularization (a 'Liouville wall') and exhibits a density of states growing like log⁡(1/ϵ)\log(1/\epsilon) with an ss-dependent subleading term. The lattice data match this structure with the identification k=π/γk=\pi/\gamma, but identification-level questions were left open. Two symmetry facts frame the problem: at γ=π/2\gamma=\pi/2 the staggered model coincides with the integrable loop model with OSP(2∣2)OSP(2|2) supergroup symmetry (the orthosymplectic Lie supergroup underlying dense intersecting loop models and supersphere sigma models), while at γ→0\gamma\to 0 it degenerates into two decoupled chains with SO(4)≅SU(2)×SU(2)SO(4)\cong SU(2)\times SU(2) symmetry.

Subsequent work transformed the picture. Ikhlef-Jacobsen-Saleur (2012) exhibited a non-Hermitian staggered spin chain whose density of states agrees with the black-hole formulas; nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) analyses (Candu-Ikhlef; Frahm-Seel; Azhari-Klümper) put the finite-size spectrum and its logarithmic corrections under analytic-numerical control. Most importantly, Bazhanov-Kotousov-Koval-Lukyanov analysed the scaling limit of the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-invariant inhomogeneous six-vertex model (the integrability class containing the staggered model) through the ODE/IQFT correspondence - the statement that scaling limits of Bethe-ansatz-solvable lattice models are encoded in the spectral theory of certain ordinary differential equations. They classified the scaling-limit space of states by highest-weight representations (modules generated from a single lowest state by the repeated action of the symmetry generators) of the W∞⊗Wˉ∞W_\infty\otimes\bar W_\infty algebra (the chiral algebra of higher-spin currents, an extension of the Virasoro algebra; here with central charge −1<c<2-1<c<2) into continuous and discrete components, derived the density of states including its ss-dependent subleading term, and confirmed that one half of the scaling-limit partition function coincides with the Euclidean black-hole partition function. Yet they rejected the Euclidean black-hole identification itself: the lattice scaling limit carries only an indefinite (pseudo-Hilbert) inner product with c<2c<2, whereas the Euclidean black-hole theory is unitary with c>2c>2, and the continuous and discrete components cannot be simultaneously normalizable within a single conformal field theory. They proposed instead a Lorentzian black-hole sigma model / gauged SL(2,R)SL(2,\mathbb{R}) WZW description with specific boundary and reality conditions - a proposal they themselves describe as tentative.

Problem Statement

Determine the continuum limit and the symmetry structure of the critical staggered (Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-inhomogeneous) six-vertex model. The source paper asked for 'a better understanding of the relationship with SL(2,R)/U(1)SL(2,\mathbb{R})/U(1)' and for the symmetry interpolating the model's two endpoints; after the partial resolutions summarized above - analytic control of the logarithmic finite-size corrections and of the density of states, the boundary conditions mapped, and the Euclidean black-hole identification rejected in favor of a tentative Lorentzian proposal - this survives as three linked questions:

  1. Continuum theory. Identify the quantum field theory describing the scaling limit on the critical line 0<γ≤π/20<\gamma\le\pi/2: its exact content (fields or target space), its space of states with Hermitian structure, its partition function, and its density of states including subleading terms. The identification must settle the relation to the SL(2,R)/U(1)SL(2,\mathbb{R})/U(1) black-hole conformal field theories: whether the scaling limit is the Euclidean black-hole coset, the Lorentzian black-hole / gauged SL(2,R)SL(2,\mathbb{R}) Wess-Zumino-Witten model with the reality conditions proposed by Bazhanov-Kotousov-Koval-Lukyanov, or another theory; it must explain why one half of the scaling-limit partition function with periodic boundary conditions coincides with the Euclidean black-hole partition function; and it must resolve how the continuous and discrete components of the space of states arise (conjecturally, from different scaling limits).

  2. Symmetry algebra and selection rules. Establish, rather than conjecture, the algebra of extended conformal symmetry acting on the scaling-limit towers, and the selection rules and descendant combinatorics (the rules determining which states occur in the excitation towers built on each highest-weight state, and with which multiplicity) governing the admissible labels - presently formulated as a series of conjectures supported by numerics.

  3. Lattice symmetry. Identify the symmetry structure of the lattice model along the critical line that interpolates between OSP(2∣2)OSP(2|2) at γ=π/2\gamma=\pi/2 and SO(4)SO(4) at γ→0\gamma\to 0 - the quantum group (a deformation of the symmetry algebra depending on a parameter qq) or other symmetry whose existence the source authors conjectured but could not identify.

All three components are jointly required for completion; together they serve one objective - a complete theory of the critical behaviour of the staggered six-vertex model: components 1 and 2 are the continuum side (which theory, with which symmetry), and component 3 is the lattice side that constrains it. An acceptable answer must be consistent with, and reproduce, the already-computed scaling-limit data: the W∞⊗Wˉ∞W_\infty\otimes\bar W_\infty highest-weight content, the density of states with its subleading term, the effective central charge, and the finite-size spectra obtainable from the Bethe ansatz. The source's further directions - boundary conditions, twists and truncations, and higher-spin or Zr\mathbb{Z}_r generalizations - have been substantially developed in the follow-up literature and are extensions of scope rather than parts of this central identification problem.
