The integrable open quantum spin chains admit two sets of diagonal boundary conditions whose Hamiltonians are invariant under the quantum groups and respectively, and whose spectra are described by a nested Bethe ansatz; the degeneracies and multiplicities implied by these symmetries have been verified numerically to be completely accounted for by Bethe-ansatz solutions at generic anisotropy. Ahmed, Nepomechie and Wang (2017) posed five open problems aimed at upgrading this numerics to rigorous structure. One of them - proof of the conjectured symmetry of the full transfer matrix for the second boundary set - was subsequently resolved by Nepomechie and Retore (2018). This record states the surviving four problems, which jointly ask for a rigorous representation-theoretic account of Bethe-ansatz completeness for these chains: (1) prove that the on-shell Bethe states are highest-weight states of the quantum group, so that each Bethe solution generates the irreducible multiplet predicted by its Dynkin label; (2) determine the behavior and completeness of the Bethe ansatz when is a root of unity; (3) identify the generally reduced quantum-group symmetries realized by the remaining integrable diagonal boundary conditions; and (4) derive explicit closed formulas in terms of Dynkin labels for the multiplicities in the and tensor-product decompositions of the Hilbert space, which are expected to coincide with the numbers of Bethe-equation solutions. Solving these would give the first such completeness results for a twisted-affine open-chain family beyond the -invariant chains.
Background
An integrable open quantum spin chain is built from an R-matrix - a matrix-valued function of a spectral parameter solving the Yang-Baxter equation - together with boundary K-matrices (reflection matrices) solving the reflection equations; the resulting transfer matrix obeys for all , and its logarithmic derivative gives the Hamiltonian. For the R-matrix of the fundamental representation of the twisted affine Kac-Moody algebra (local quantum space of dimension ; the case is the Izergin-Korepin R-matrix), Ahmed, Nepomechie and Wang studied two sets of integrable diagonal boundary conditions. Set I is the standard quantum-group-invariant boundary whose spectrum was analyzed in the 1990s by Artz, Mezincescu and Nepomechie; set II is a second, previously little-explored choice. A quantum group is a deformation, with deformation parameter ( the anisotropy), of the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra ; it acts on the -site Hilbert space through an -fold coproduct (the rule prescribing how the algebra acts on a tensor product of local spaces), which for these models is a nonstandard one - it differs from the standard Drinfeld-Jimbo coproduct of the Lie algebra. The key result of that paper is that the Hamiltonians for the two boundary sets commute with and , respectively (the case of the symmetry was noticed earlier by Nepomechie). Under the local space is the -dimensional vector representation; under it decomposes as a -dimensional vector representation plus a one-dimensional singlet. Consequently the -site Hilbert space decomposes into irreducible representations (irreps) as for set I and for set II, where each irrep is uniquely characterized by its Dynkin label - the eigenvalues of the Cartan generators on a highest-weight vector, that is, a vector annihilated by all raising operators . These symmetries predict the degeneracies (irrep dimensions) and multiplicities (numbers of copies of each irrep) in the spectrum.
The eigenvalues are described by a Bethe ansatz: each eigenvalue is labeled by the numbers of Bethe roots of each of the types, with the corresponding eigenvectors (the on-shell Bethe states) constructed by the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz of Li, Shi and Yue - an iterative construction in which creation operators built from the monodromy matrix act on a simple reference state, and consistency of the result with the Bethe eigenvalue forces the roots to satisfy a coupled system of algebraic Bethe equations. Ahmed, Nepomechie and Wang proposed a formula for the Dynkin label of a Bethe state in terms of and verified numerically, for small ranks and chain lengths at generic , that the degeneracies and multiplicities implied by the quantum-group symmetries are completely accounted for by the Bethe-ansatz solutions - numerical evidence that the Bethe ansatz is complete for these chains. They listed five open problems: (i) prove the conjectured symmetry of the full transfer matrix for set II (only Hamiltonian-level symmetry was shown); (ii) prove that the on-shell Bethe states are highest-weight states; (iii) investigate the Bethe ansatz when is a root of unity, where the representation theory changes qualitatively; (iv) explore other integrable diagonal boundary conditions and their presumably reduced quantum-group symmetries; (v) find closed formulas for the multiplicities in the two decompositions above, which are expected to coincide with the numbers of Bethe-equation solutions. Problem (i) has since been resolved (Nepomechie and Retore, 2018), so the open question is the conjunction of (ii)-(v): a rigorous representation-theoretic account of Bethe-ansatz completeness for these chains. Two precedents delimit what is known: for the -invariant chains the highest-weight property of Bethe states was proven by de Vega and Gonzalez-Ruiz (1994), and for the -invariant open XXZ chain the Bethe-solution counting at roots of unity is understood (Gainutdinov, Hao, Nepomechie and Sommese, 2015); neither result extends to the twisted R-matrix with its nonstandard coproduct.
Problem Statement
For the integrable open quantum spin chains with the two quantum-group-invariant diagonal boundary sets of Ahmed, Nepomechie and Wang (set I with symmetry, set II with symmetry), establish the four open problems posed in that work that remain unsolved (its first item, the transfer-matrix symmetry for set II, has since been proven by Nepomechie and Retore and is not part of this problem):
- (Highest-weight property.) Prove that the on-shell Bethe states (the transfer-matrix eigenvectors, whose Bethe roots solve the Bethe equations) constructed by the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz (Li, Shi and Yue) are highest-weight states of the corresponding quantum group - that is, are annihilated by all raising generators,
for both boundary sets I () and II (), so that the degenerate eigenvectors generated by the lowering operators form the irreducible representation predicted by the Bethe state's Dynkin label.
-
(Roots of unity.) Determine the behavior and completeness of the Bethe ansatz when is a root of unity, i.e. for some positive integer (non-generic ), where the representation theory changes qualitatively (restricted and tilting modules - representation categories that replace ordinary irreducible modules at roots of unity - additional continuous and singular Bethe solutions, and Jordan cells, i.e. failure of the transfer matrix to be diagonalizable); in particular, how the solution counting and the degeneracy structure generalize the known results.
-
(Remaining diagonal boundaries.) For the other integrable diagonal boundary conditions of the open chain beyond sets I and II (the known diagonal K-matrix families include those in the classification of Malara and Lima-Santos), identify the generally reduced quantum-group symmetries of the transfer matrices - the source expects "less" quantum group symmetry for these models, and the Nepomechie-Retore survey expects "some QG symmetry" - and the corresponding degeneracy structure of their spectra.
-
(Multiplicity formulas.) Derive explicit closed formulas, in terms of the Dynkin labels and the chain length , for the multiplicities in the Hilbert-space decompositions
which, as conjectured in the source, should coincide with the numbers of Bethe-equation solutions with the corresponding root cardinalities at generic , thereby providing the a priori count against which Bethe-ansatz completeness is measured.
These four deliverables jointly serve one objective: a complete, rigorous representation-theoretic account of the Bethe ansatz for the open chains, in which the degeneracy of every transfer-matrix eigenvalue is explained by an identified quantum-group irreducible representation and every copy of every irreducible representation is accounted for by a Bethe solution - at generic and at roots of unity, and across the space of integrable diagonal boundary conditions.
