The Bazhanov–Sergeev master solution expresses the Boltzmann weights of a two-dimensional edge-interaction (Ising-type) lattice model through the elliptic gamma function and contains essentially all previously known solutions of the star-triangle relation — the form of the Yang–Baxter equation guaranteeing exact solvability of such models. Kels (2013) showed that one singular chain of degenerations of this solution — first a hyperbolic degeneration to the generalized Faddeev–Volkov model, then a strong-coupling limit in which the continuous spins develop emergent integer-valued components — yields a new exactly solvable model with mixed continuous/integer spins and Euler-gamma weights, and observed that further singular limits of the elliptic nomes , and the hyperbolic parameter should produce further new solutions, each requiring its own delicate case-by-case analysis with redefined spins and spectral parameters to obtain convergent limits. The open problem is to convert that observation into a systematic theory: classify the singular limits of the master solution and of its hyperbolic degeneration that produce well-defined new solutions of the star-triangle relation; establish rigorous criteria determining which redefinitions of spins and spectral parameters yield convergent, real, positive Boltzmann weights; and determine the parameter domains, including boundary cases, in which the limiting relations remain valid.
Background
Two-dimensional lattice spin models with edge interactions generalize the Ising model: continuous or discrete spin variables sit on lattice sites, and pairs of spins connected by an edge interact through a Boltzmann weight depending on the spins and on an additive spectral parameter , with horizontal and vertical weights related by crossing symmetry , where is the crossing parameter. Such a model is exactly solvable if the weights satisfy the star-triangle relation — the form taken by the Yang–Baxter equation (the master consistency condition of quantum integrability) for edge-interaction models. It states that integrating over an internal spin with a single-spin weight reproduces, up to a spin-independent prefactor, the three edge weights of the complementary triangle; it guarantees commuting transfer matrices and underlies Baxter's exact solutions of the Ising, chiral Potts, and related models. The elliptic gamma function is the most general of the classical special functions of this type: it is a meromorphic function, doubly periodic up to the two elliptic nomes , (with , so ), that degenerates in special limits to the q-gamma, hyperbolic gamma (Faddeev quantum dilogarithm), and ordinary gamma functions. Its integral transform is Spiridonov's elliptic beta integral, a master identity among special-function integrals. Bazhanov and Sergeev (2012) discovered a master solution of the star-triangle relation whose weights are built from the elliptic gamma function, with continuous spins taking values on a circle: it contains all previously known solutions of this relation as particular cases and corresponds mathematically to the elliptic beta integral. When the nomes , approach special values (degenerate nomes, roots of unity, or vanishing limits), the master solution degenerates. One degeneration chain leads to the hyperbolic beta integral and the Faddeev–Volkov model — an exactly solvable model whose weights are built from the hyperbolic gamma function (Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm, depending on a parameter ) — and to its generalized version solved by Bazhanov, Mangazeev, and Sergeev (2008). Kels (2013) then took a further strong-coupling limit: the asymptotics of the hyperbolic beta integral develop sharp delta-function peaks that pin the real-valued spins to integers, so a discrete spin component emerges dynamically. The result is a new Ising-type model whose sites carry two kinds of spin variables, one continuous real-valued and one integer-valued, with Boltzmann weights expressed through the Euler gamma function and manifestly real and positive, satisfying a star-triangle relation of mixed sum/integral type. The source paper stresses, however, that these degenerations are rather singular: each limit needs its own detailed case-by-case analysis, the spins and spectral parameters must be redefined along the limit to obtain convergent weights, and no comprehensive account of the possible singular limits exists. The mathematical backdrop for organizing such degenerations is Rains's theory of limits of elliptic hypergeometric integrals, which describes how the elliptic beta integral degenerates through hyperbolic, trigonometric, and rational branches; but that theory concerns the integral identities themselves, not the resulting lattice models, and does not address convergence, reality, or positivity of redefined Boltzmann weights. The question is therefore: which singular limits of the master solution (and of its hyperbolic degeneration) actually produce new, well-defined, physically acceptable solutions of the star-triangle relation, and can this zoo be classified and controlled systematically rather than harvested one limit at a time.
Problem Statement
Starting from the Bazhanov–Sergeev master solution of the star-triangle relation (weights built from the elliptic gamma function with nomes , and continuous circle-valued spins) and from its hyperbolic degeneration (the generalized Faddeev–Volkov model with hyperbolic-gamma weights depending on a parameter ), develop a systematic classification of the singular limits in which , , or approach special values and a new well-defined solution of the star-triangle relation — one whose redefined Boltzmann weights are convergent, non-degenerate, real, and positive — emerges after a redefinition of the spins and spectral parameters. Specifically: (1) enumerate and classify the degeneration chains (including nome degenerations, roots of unity, and the hyperbolic branch) that produce new solutions, identifying the emergent spin structure (continuous, discrete, or mixed; value domains) and the limiting interaction kernel of each; (2) establish rigorous criteria that determine, for each limit and each proposed redefinition of the spins and spectral parameters, whether the redefined Boltzmann weights are convergent, non-degenerate, real, and positive, or divergent or trivial; (3) determine the parameter domains and boundary cases (including values at which the currently known asymptotics break down) within which each limiting star-triangle relation — in particular its mixed sum/integral forms and Gamma-function weight representations — remains valid. The physical characterization of the resulting models (transfer-matrix spectra, correlation functions, continuum limits) is a natural continuation of this classification and may be included, but is not a substitute for it.
