Microscopic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) studies of the carbon isotopes predicted three linked exotic-structure phenomena: a 3-alpha linear-chain configuration in stabilized by two valence neutrons and carrying a rotational band; dilute cluster-gas and linear-like cluster states in the mirror pair / analogous to the Hoyle state of ; and a decoupling of proton and neutron intrinsic shapes in the ground bands of neutron-rich carbon, invoked to explain the anomalously hindered in . The experimental confirmation of the linear-chain band has since been achieved (2023), so the surviving open problem is: (i) firm microscopic identification and experimental assignment of the predicted cluster-gas-like and linear-like states of / to measured levels, including their rotational sequences and decay properties; (ii) establishment of the mechanism and its universality for proton-neutron shape decoupling across the neutron-rich carbon chain, quantified against electromagnetic and scattering observables; and (iii) completion of the quantitative characterization (level energies, transition rates, decay widths, electromagnetic moments, effective-interaction robustness) of the chain bands in / needed to provide unambiguous signatures for the chain members not yet experimentally confirmed.
Background
Light nuclei with strong neutron excess often break away from the shell-model picture of independent nucleons and organize into clusters, the alpha particle () being especially stable. The classic example is the second state of at 7.65 MeV (the Hoyle state), which is understood as a dilute gas of three weakly interacting alpha clusters. Whether alpha clusters can also align into a straight line, the linear-chain configuration proposed in the 1950s, is a long-standing question: in itself microscopic calculations show the pure linear chain is unstable against bending, but excess (valence) neutrons occupying molecular orbitals that bind along the chain axis can stabilize it, in analogy to covalent binding in molecules. In this molecular-orbital picture, valence neutrons occupy orbitals (localized along the chain axis) or orbitals (perpendicular to it); different occupations produce rotational bands with different quantum numbers, labeled by the projection of the angular momentum on the symmetry axis and by parity , such as the band of the two-neutron -bond chain in . The theoretical tool of the source work is antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD), a variational framework in which the nucleus is described by a Slater determinant of Gaussian wave packets whose positions and widths are optimized without assuming clusters in advance, so that both mean-field-like and cluster-like structures emerge; combining energy-constrained AMD wave functions through the generator coordinate method (GCM) generates rotational bands and excited states. Applied to carbon isotopes, AMD+GCM studies by Suhara, Kanada-En'yo and collaborators found: a linear-chain band in () near the threshold; in and its mirror nucleus (the nucleus obtained by interchanging protons and neutrons) a spectrum of three-center structures including dilute cluster-gas states (a analog of the Hoyle state, most prominently a state near 8.56 MeV in , where denotes the triton ) and linear-like states; and, in the ground bands of the neutron-rich isotopes, an evolution in which the proton density keeps an approximately fixed shape while the neutron density deforms rapidly, the two shapes decoupling outright in . This last phenomenon bears on a well-known experimental puzzle: the electric quadrupole transition strength between the first excited state and the ground state of , measured by lifetime techniques, is among the smallest known for even-even nuclei, even though the low excitation energy of the state suggests collectivity; proton-neutron shape decoupling would quench the proton contribution to the matrix element while the neutrons remain deformed. The 2013 conference report by Kanada-En'yo, Kobayashi and Suhara summarized these predictions and posed the open issues: experimental confirmation and deeper theoretical characterization of the chain band, firm assignment of the cluster-gas and linear-like states in /, and clarification of the mechanism and universality of proton-neutron shape decoupling. Experimental progress on these questions relies on rare-isotope beams and invariant-mass spectroscopy, in which excited states of an unstable nucleus are reconstructed event-by-event from the momenta of their decay fragments, with spin-parity determined from angular-correlation analysis of the decay.
Problem Statement
Building on the now-confirmed existence of valence-neutron-stabilized linear-chain bands in 14C and 16C, the open problem posed by the source work and extended by later studies is to complete the experimentally anchored microscopic characterization of exotic clustering and shape evolution in the light carbon isotopes, specifically: (1) establish which measured excited states of 11B and its mirror 11C correspond to the predicted dilute cluster-gas states (the 2alpha+t analogs of the 12C Hoyle state) and to the linear-like cluster states, fixing their spin-parities, rotational sequences, and decay properties, including specification of the measurements that would confirm the predicted isoscalar dipole transition strengths (dipole transitions that excite protons and neutrons in phase); (2) determine the mechanism of proton-neutron shape decoupling in the ground bands of neutron-rich carbon isotopes, that is, quantify the valence-neutron orbital structure that produces it, assess its sensitivity to the chosen effective interaction, and validate the resulting description against electromagnetic transition strengths and moments, quadrupole matrix-element ratios such as (the ratio of the neutron to the proton quadrupole matrix element), radii, and scattering observables across 10C through 20C; and (3) complete the quantitative characterization of the linear-chain bands of 14C and 16C (level energies, electromagnetic transition rates and moments, and cluster decay widths, with their dependence on the effective interaction), such that the experimentally established band members are consistently reproduced and unambiguous signatures are provided for chain states whose spins are still not directly measured. These three parts are all required and jointly serve one objective: a single microscopic picture of the carbon isotopes, robust under the choice of effective interaction, whose predicted cluster configurations and proton/neutron shape evolution are confirmed level-by-level against experiment.
