Heavy-ion fusion below the Coulomb barrier often exhibits "hindrance": the measured cross sections fall below coupled-channels predictions as energy decreases, and the astrophysical S factor develops a maximum at a threshold energy EsE_s. For the positive-fusion-Q-value system 12^{12}C+30^{30}Si, measured down to σfus≃3 μ\sigma_{\mathrm{fus}}\simeq 3~\mub, the S factor only tends toward a maximum near Es≃10.5E_s\simeq 10.5 MeV, and no tested coupled-channels variant reproduces this maximum; it is accommodated only by phenomenologically adjusted damping of the coupling strengths inside the barrier. The open problem is to establish the physical origin and achieve a prediction of the deep sub-barrier S-factor maximum (its existence, threshold, and shape) free of system-specific parameter adjustment in light positive-Q-value systems, using 12^{12}C+30^{30}Si and its companion medium-light systems as anchors, and to discriminate smooth adiabatic hindrance from quasimolecular-resonance interpretations of low-energy structure. Progress since 2018 has confirmed hindrance signatures in 12^{12}C+24,26^{24,26}Mg and 12^{12}C+28^{28}Si and sharpened the question, but the damping mechanism remains without microscopic justification, the maximum of 12^{12}C+30^{30}Si is unverified below the measured range, and the existence of hindrance in the lightest astrophysical systems is actively contested.

Background

When two nuclei fuse at energies below the Coulomb barrier (the potential-energy hill created by the competition of Coulomb repulsion and nuclear attraction), the cross section σ(E)\sigma(E) is dominated by quantum tunnelling and falls steeply with decreasing energy EE. Because the Coulomb repulsion masks the smooth nuclear part of the rate, it is conventional to quote the astrophysical S factor, S(E)=σ(E) E e2πηS(E)=\sigma(E)\,E\,e^{2\pi\eta}, where 2πη2\pi\eta is the Gamow factor for point charges; S(E)S(E) varies slowly whenever the tunnelling is through a fixed, energy-independent barrier. Standard near-barrier fusion theory is the coupled-channels (CC) framework, in which tunnelling is helped by couplings of the relative motion to collective surface vibrations and rotations of the two nuclei, producing a distribution of barrier heights. Around 2002, precision measurements on medium-mass systems revealed "fusion hindrance": at deep sub-barrier energies the excitation function steepens beyond any standard CC prediction, seen as the logarithmic slope L(E)=dln⁡(Eσ)/dln⁡EL(E)=d\ln(E\sigma)/d\ln E rising above the value LCSL_{CS} expected for a constant S factor, so that S(E)S(E) passes through a maximum at a threshold energy denoted EsE_s (B. B. Back, H. Esbensen, C. L. Jiang, and K. E. Rehm, "Recent developments in heavy-ion fusion reactions", Rev. Mod. Phys. 86, 317 (2014), DOI 10.1103/RevModPhys.86.317). Two main descriptions exist, both partly phenomenological. In the sudden picture, a repulsive core added to the internuclear potential makes it shallow and reproduces hindrance in many systems. In the adiabatic model of T. Ichikawa, K. Hagino, and A. Iwamoto ("Existence of a one-body barrier revealed in deep subbarrier fusion", Phys. Rev. C 75, 057603 (2007), DOI 10.1103/PhysRevC.75.057603), neck formation between the colliding nuclei damps the coupling form factors in the overlap region: the coupling strength of each eigenchannel (an independent normal mode of the coupled-channels problem) is quenched by a Gaussian factor e−(r−Rd−λα)2/2ad2e^{-(r-R_d-\lambda_\alpha)^2/2a_d^2} of the internuclear distance rr, with adjustable parameters rdr_d and ada_d (a damping radius and diffuseness; Rd=rd(AP1/3+AT1/3)R_d=r_d(A_P^{1/3}+A_T^{1/3}) with APA_P and ATA_T the mass numbers of projectile and target, and λα\lambda_\alpha an eigenchannel-dependent length), usually combined with a Yukawa-plus-exponential (YPE) internuclear potential that mimics nuclear-matter saturation. A different mechanism was proposed by C. Simenel et al. ("How the Pauli exclusion principle affects fusion of atomic nuclei", Phys. Rev. C 95, 031601 (2017), DOI 10.1103/PhysRevC.95.031601): time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF, the mean-field evolution of the two-nucleus many-body wave function) shows that the Pauli exclusion principle blocks overlap of the two nuclei, thickening and raising the effective barrier. None of these ingredients is yet predictive without system-by-system tuning. Hindrance matters astrophysically: L. R. Gasques et al. ("Implications of low-energy fusion hindrance on stellar burning and nucleosynthesis", Phys. Rev. C 76, 035802 (2007), DOI 10.1103/PhysRevC.76.035802) showed that hindrance in reactions such as 12^{12}C+12^{12}C and 16^{16}O+16^{16}O (carbon and oxygen burning in massive stars and type-Ia supernovae; all have positive fusion Q values) would substantially change ignition temperatures, reaction rates, and predicted isotopic abundances. Whether hindrance actually occurs in such light positive-Q systems is exactly what is not established: for positive Q values the S factor need not develop a maximum at all as E→0E\to 0, and low-energy structures may instead be quasimolecular resonances (long-lived molecular-like states of the two touching nuclei, familiar from 12^{12}C+12^{12}C). C. L. Jiang et al. ("Survey of heavy-ion fusion hindrance for lighter systems", Phys. Rev. C 79, 044601 (2009), DOI 10.1103/PhysRevC.79.044601) provided an empirical extrapolation formula placing EsE_s on the system parameter ζ=Z1Z2μ1/2\zeta=Z_1Z_2\mu^{1/2} (μ\mu the reduced mass), but the lightest points remain extrapolations from inconsistent datasets. In this context G. Montagnoli et al. (Phys. Rev. C 97, 024610 (2018), DOI 10.1103/PhysRevC.97.024610) measured 12^{12}C+30^{30}Si — deliberately chosen as a medium-light positive-Q link between well-studied heavier systems and the astrophysical carbon and oxygen systems — down to ≃3 μ\simeq 3~\mub. The slope L(E)L(E) crosses LCSL_{CS}, the S factor tends to develop a maximum near Es≃10.5±0.6E_s\simeq 10.5\pm 0.6 MeV consistent with the Jiang systematics, and CC calculations with a Woods-Saxon or YPE potential reproduce the data only when the Gaussian damping of couplings is switched on with fitted rd,adr_d,a_d (rd=1.32r_d=1.32 fm, ad=0.38a_d=0.38 fm for the Woods-Saxon potential; rd=1.36r_d=1.36 fm, ad=0.85a_d=0.85 fm for the Yukawa-plus-exponential potential); none of the CC variants reproduces the maximum itself, excitations of the 12^{12}C nucleus were neglected, and for the neighboring light system 12^{12}C+16^{16}O (X. Fang et al., Phys. Rev. C 96, 045804 (2017), DOI 10.1103/PhysRevC.96.045804) it remained unclear whether the decreasing low-energy S factor reflects hindrance or quasimolecular resonances.

Problem Statement

Establish the physical origin and the predictability of deep sub-barrier fusion hindrance in light positive-Q-value systems, anchored by the measured 12^{12}C+30^{30}Si excitation function. Concretely: (1) derive, from microscopic nuclear dynamics (e.g., time-dependent many-body evolution, Pauli-blocking physics, or a parameter-free coupled-channels formulation), why and how the channel-coupling strengths are damped in the nuclear-overlap region, so that the occurrence, the threshold energy EsE_s of the S-factor maximum (empirically Es≃10.5±0.6E_s\simeq 10.5\pm 0.6 MeV for 12^{12}C+30^{30}Si), and the shape of S(E)S(E) through the maximum are predicted rather than fitted with system-specific damping parameters rd,adr_d,a_d; (2) determine empirically whether the 12^{12}C+30^{30}Si S-factor maximum is a robust feature that persists at energies below the measured σfus≃3 μ\sigma_{\mathrm{fus}}\simeq 3~\mub reach, and whether the cross sections there follow the one-dimensional no-coupling tunnelling limit (the cross section for tunnelling through the bare internuclear barrier with all channel couplings switched off) or fall below it; and (3) discriminate smooth adiabatic hindrance from quasimolecular-resonance or low-level-density oscillation interpretations of low-energy S-factor structure — quasimolecular resonances being long-lived molecular-like states of the two touching nuclei, and low-level-density oscillations arising from the sparse discrete spectrum of the light compound nucleus (the composite system formed once the two nuclei merge) — in the neighboring light positive-Q systems (e.g., 12^{12}C+16^{16}O, 12^{12}C+24,26^{24,26}Mg, and the contested 12^{12}C+12^{12}C case). These three components jointly serve one objective: a validated, mechanistic account of hindrance in light positive-Q-value fusion systems sufficient to constrain, rather than merely parametrize, the extrapolation of astrophysical reaction rates for carbon and oxygen burning. All three components are mandatory for a complete resolution; each is independently reportable if left open, and a component that the available measurements or a parameter-free treatment cannot settle (such as the behaviour below the measured reach in component (2)) must be stated as an explicit open remainder rather than counted as resolved.
