Whether an antikaon (K−K^-) can form nuclear-matter-like quasibound states — 'deeply bound kaonic clusters' — has been a driving question of low-energy strangeness physics since the Akaishi–Yamazaki prediction of a K−ppK^-pp state bound by tens of MeV. A 2009 review by Oset and coauthors (arXiv:0912.3145) identified the decisive open issues: the KˉN\bar{K}N interaction below threshold is essentially unconstrained by data, so predicted K−ppK^-pp bindings and widths varied widely across calculations, awaiting experimental validation. Since then, major progress has occurred: J-PARC E15 observed a KˉNN\bar{K}NN signal in 3He(K−,Λp)n{}^3\mathrm{He}(K^- , \Lambda p)n with binding 42±3−4+342 \pm 3^{+3}_{-4} MeV and width 100±7−9+19100 \pm 7^{+19}_{-9} MeV; the LEPS2 Collaboration reported photoproduction evidence at 7.3σ7.3\sigma local significance with a mass about 16 MeV below threshold and width 55±23−9+3155 \pm 23^{+31}_{-9} MeV; and the SIDDHARTA/SIDDHARTA-2 program has now measured kaonic hydrogen to high precision and, in 2026, kaonic deuterium for the first time, finally providing the isospin-separated threshold KˉN\bar{K}N input. The problem remains open: the two production channels yield differing effective masses and their parameters are reaction-dependent effective quantities not directly comparable without reaction modeling, few-body calculations still exhibit unquantified model dependence, and no calculation anchored in the new kaonic hydrogen/deuterium constraints has been shown to reproduce (or refute) the observed spectrum.

Background

An antikaon (K−K^-) is the negatively charged strange meson; in the standard picture the strong attraction between K−K^- and a nucleon (N=p,nN = p, n) in the isospin-0 channel is reflected in the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) resonance, which chiral-unitary theories interpret as a quasi-bound KˉN\bar{K}N molecular state. Because low-energy QCD is non-perturbative in this sector, the KˉN\bar{K}N amplitude is reconstructed from coupled-channel data: unitarized chiral SU(3) effective field theory — the low-energy effective theory of QCD built on the symmetry pattern of the light uu, dd, ss quarks — couples the KˉN\bar{K}N, πΣ\pi \Sigma, and πΛ\pi \Lambda channels, and its free parameters are fitted to scattering lengths inferred from kaonic atoms — kaonic atoms being exotic atoms in which a K−K^- replaces an electron, whose X-ray line shifts and broadenings encode the strong-interaction shift and width of the atomic 1s1s level and, via a Deser-type relation, the KˉN\bar{K}N scattering length at threshold. The threshold amplitude fixes the scattering length, but a K−K^- bound inside a nucleus samples the amplitude 20–60 MeV below the KˉN\bar{K}N threshold, where until recently only the πΣ\pi\Sigma spectral shape around the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) provided any experimental handle — this is the subthreshold-extrapolation problem at the heart of the field. Akaishi and Yamazaki (2002) constructed phenomenological deep KˉN\bar{K}N potentials that reproduce the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) and predicted genuinely nuclear (not atomic) kaonic bound states, starting with K−ppK^-pp bound by roughly 48 MeV, while chiral SU(3)-based amplitudes typically yield shallower, broader states. By 2009 the predictions for the K−ppK^-pp binding energy and width varied by factors of order two across calculations, and early experimental claims (FINUDA, DISTO) were contested. The review by Oset and coauthors (2009) highlighted several persistent problems: the scarcity of subthreshold experimental constraints on KˉN\bar{K}N, leaving KˉNN\bar{K}NN predictions unvalidated; model dependence from off-shell two-body input and chiral three-body forces; the testability of predicted three-body structures; and the kaon–nucleus optical potential (the complex potential Vopt=Re V+i Im VV_{\mathrm{opt}} = \mathrm{Re}\,V + i\,\mathrm{Im}\,V describing K−K^- propagation in nuclear matter, constrained by kaonic-atom data across the periodic table). This record formulates the core objective anchored on the lightest system KˉNN\bar{K}NN: determining whether it exists as a genuine quasibound state and whether its binding energy and width are consistent with the KˉN\bar{K}N interaction as constrained by kaonic hydrogen, kaonic deuterium, and πΣ\pi\Sigma spectra. The review's separate spectroscopy items concerning two-meson–one-baryon clusters (a KKˉNK\bar{K}N state near 1920 MeV, the assignment of the X(2175) as ϕKKˉ\phi K\bar{K}, and a J/ψKKˉJ/\psi K\bar{K} structure near 4150 MeV related to the Y(4260)) constitute a distinct hadron-spectroscopy objective and are deliberately excluded from this core.

Problem Statement

Establish, quantitatively and consistently, the lightest antikaon–nuclear quasibound state KˉNN\bar{K}NN (equivalently K−ppK^-pp): determine (i) whether a genuine sub-threshold pole/quasibound structure exists, where a negative resolution — that the observed sub-threshold enhancements in 3He(K−,Λp)n{}^3\mathrm{He}(K^- , \Lambda p)n (J-PARC E15) and γd→K0Λp\gamma d \to K^0 \Lambda p (LEPS2) arise from conventional reaction mechanisms — is an admissible outcome; (ii) its binding energy relative to the K−+p+pK^- + p + p threshold and its decay width, with uncertainties; and (iii) whether those observables follow from few-body calculations of the coupled-channel, absorptive KˉNN\bar{K}NN system whose two-body KˉN\bar{K}N input is constrained by the available threshold and sub-threshold data — kaonic hydrogen and kaonic deuterium X-ray shifts and widths, the πΣ\pi\Sigma invariant-mass spectrum around the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405), low-energy KˉN\bar{K}N cross sections, and cross-channel constraints — with the model dependence identified in the literature (sub-threshold extrapolation of the KˉN\bar{K}N amplitude 20–60 MeV below threshold, off-shell behaviour of the two-body input, three-body forces, and the choice of few-body method) quantified rather than left as an unexplained spread across model classes. The determination should be confronted with the existing experimental KˉNN\bar{K}NN candidate results, whose parameters are reaction-channel-dependent effective quantities and are therefore not directly comparable across channels without reaction modeling. The related question of the kaon–nucleus optical potential and of deeper, possibly narrower Kˉ\bar{K}-nuclear binding in heavier nuclei — treated by the cited review as a separate topic — provides context for the determination but is not a required deliverable.
