Fermi and Yang's 1949 proposal that mesons are nucleon–antinucleon bound states survives as the 'baryonium' question: does the strongly attractive N–N̄ interaction support quasi-bound p p̄ and n p̄ states below or near threshold? The classic direct test — detection of the monoenergetic γ ray that tags two-body radiative formation of a narrow subthreshold state, p p̄ → X + γ (and the n p̄ channel reached through antiprotons stopped in deuterium), in annihilation at rest — was performed at CERN's LEAR and at KEK during 1982–1999 with null results, but those measurements lost sensitivity precisely in the 0–60 MeV subthreshold binding window (photon energies E_γ ≈ 0–60 MeV) where current BESIII near-threshold structures (X(1835), and X(1880) just above the p p̄ threshold) and N–N̄ potential and effective-field-theory (EFT) analyses now place candidate states. The open problem is to establish or exclude N–N̄ bound states directly — through a γ-spectroscopy measurement (or an equivalent direct subthreshold constraint) sensitive in this window — rather than only through model-dependent line-shape fits that currently disagree on whether poles exist at all.
Background
A nucleon–antinucleon (N–N̄) system pairs a proton or neutron with its antiparticle. Fermi and Yang (1949) proposed that mesons are not elementary but nucleon–antinucleon bound states; in modern language, hypothetical N–N̄ quasi-bound states are called baryonium. QCD later replaced this picture with quark–antiquark mesons, but the underlying dynamical question — whether the strong N–N̄ attraction supports states that are dominantly N–N̄ — has never been settled. The direct, essentially model-independent test proposed in the 1980s uses two-body kinematics: if an N–N̄ pair annihilating at rest forms a narrow state X below the N–N̄ threshold together with a photon, N N̄ → X + γ, the photon is monoenergetic, with approximately equal to the binding energy (tens of MeV); a line in the inclusive γ spectrum is then direct evidence for a bound state. (A free N–N̄ pair cannot annihilate into a single photon alone; the photon accompanies the formation of the state.) The n p̄ channel is accessed by stopping antiprotons in deuterium, where the spectator proton carries little momentum. After narrow 'baryonium' claims of the 1970s were not confirmed, dedicated searches were carried out: Bertini et al. (1982) near threshold in p d → nX, Adiels et al. (1986) in the γ spectrum of p̄p annihilation at rest at LEAR (CERN's Low Energy Antiproton Ring), and Chiba et al. (1986, 1987) with a NaI calorimeter at KEK, followed by their p̄d γ-ray (1991) and monochromatic-π⁰ (1999) measurements; all yielded negative answers for narrow states. The question was revived by BES/BESIII: an enhancement at the p p̄ threshold appeared in radiative J/ψ decays (J/ψ → γ p p̄, with J/ψ the 1S charmonium state) in 2003; the X(1835) resonance in J/ψ → γ π⁺π⁻η′ was discovered in 2005 and assigned 0⁻⁺ quantum numbers (the pseudoscalar assignment, ) in 2012; and its line shape shows an abrupt anomaly at the p p̄ threshold (2016) that can be described either by a Flatté form — a coupled-channel shape whose threshold branch point is what a subthreshold bound state would produce — or by two interfering resonances. BESIII (2024) resolves a new X(1880) near threshold and states that it indicates a p p̄ bound state. On the theory side, the Paris N–N̄ potential predicts quasi-bound poles (in standard spectroscopic notation, the spin-singlet S-wave ¹¹S₀ at −4.8−i26 MeV and the spin-triplet P-wave ³³P₁ at −4.5−i9.0 MeV) while Jülich-type potentials produce a virtual state (a pole on a different unphysical sheet that mimics threshold enhancement without a true bound state) instead; coupled-channel effective-field-theory fits to e⁺e⁻ → N N̄ find a quasi-bound state just above the p p̄ threshold, while a unified chiral-EFT description (2026) reproduces the near-threshold structures without any narrow resonance. Wycech, Dedonder and Loiseau (2014/2015) pinpointed why the old direct test was inconclusive: the now-expected signals lie at bindings of 0–60 MeV below threshold (E_γ ≈ 0–60 MeV; e.g. X(1835) formation at rest would give E_γ ≈ 41 MeV), exactly where the at-rest spectra were swamped by π⁰-decay and charge-exchange (π⁻p → γn) backgrounds, and proposed repeating the measurement with few-hundred-MeV antiprotons at FAIR/FLAIR (the FAIR facility at GSI, whose PANDA experiment uses a stored antiproton beam) along with fine-structure studies of light antiprotonic atoms.
Problem Statement
Do nucleon–antinucleon quasi-bound states in the p p̄ and n p̄ channels exist as poles of the N–N̄ amplitude below or near threshold, and can their existence be established (or excluded) directly rather than through model-dependent line-shape fits? The archetypal direct test, proposed in the 1980s and still unexecuted at useful sensitivity, is the monoenergetic-γ search: measure the inclusive γ spectrum of N N̄ annihilation — p̄p in hydrogen for the p p̄ channel and antiprotons stopped in deuterium for the n p̄ channel, whether at rest or with few-hundred-MeV antiprotons, which move the expected signals out of the low-energy background region — and look for the monoenergetic line that tags two-body radiative formation N N̄ → X + γ of a narrow subthreshold state X, at in the N N̄ centre-of-mass frame. A complete answer must (i) reach, or otherwise directly constrain, the subthreshold binding window 0–60 MeV below the N–N̄ threshold (E_γ ≈ 0–60 MeV), the window where current data and N–N̄ potentials place candidate states, in both charge channels (p p̄ and n p̄); (ii) report at least one of the following forms of result, each independently sufficient to satisfy this clause — a detected line with its significance, the implied binding energy and width of the state, and an assignment of its quantum numbers and N–N̄ (versus conventional meson) nature; or, for a γ-spectroscopy measurement, quantitative upper limits on radiative-formation branching as a function of E_γ across that window, at stated detector resolution, efficiency, and background model; or, for an equivalent direct subthreshold constraint — defined as a quantitative constraint on the N–N̄ amplitude in that window that does not rely on model-dependent line-shape fitting, whether obtained from a new measurement or derived by reanalysis of already-published direct measurements such as the LEAR/KEK γ spectra of refs 2–7 or published antiprotonic-atom level shifts and widths in light atoms — the corresponding constraint with its stated systematics; or the quantified projected sensitivity reach of a specified measurement design in the same window, at stated detector resolution, efficiency, and background model; and (iii) state explicitly what the result implies for the existence of N–N̄ bound-state poles — whether it establishes or excludes them, or only constrains them — including its relation to the X(1835)/X(1880) threshold structures and to bound-state versus virtual-state alternatives.
