The nucleon–antinucleon () system may support quasi-bound states — 'baryonium' — below the threshold. The Paris potential predicts two such poles, an isospin-0 state about 5 MeV below threshold with a width of roughly 50 MeV and a narrower P-wave state, and links them to the threshold enhancement in , the X(1835) peak in , and anomalies in antiprotonic atoms and in antiproton capture on nuclei. Whether these structures are genuine poles of the QCD-driven interaction, rather than artifacts of a particular potential parametrization or pure final-state threshold effects, remains undecided. Recent BESIII measurements — the 2016 anomalous line shape at the threshold and the 2024 observation of X(1880) — strengthen the case for near-threshold bound-state physics, while chiral-effective-field-theory analyses reproduce the same spectra without any subthreshold pole, and the dedicated subthreshold experiments proposed in the source (antiprotonic-atom fine structure, peripheral annihilation, subthreshold -spectrum searches) have not been performed. The problem is to establish the existence or absence of subthreshold quasi-bound states and, if present, their pole positions, quantum numbers, and couplings.
Background
"Baryonium" denotes hypothetical hadrons preferentially coupled to, or composed of, baryon–antibaryon channels — historically the states predicted from duality arguments in the late 1960s, and in modern usage quasi-nuclear bound states of a nucleon and an antinucleon (, with or ). The threshold lies at MeV; a "subthreshold" or "quasi-bound" state is a pole of the scattering amplitude at complex energy below threshold on an unphysical Riemann sheet of the complex energy plane. It is not a stable particle but a resonant configuration that decays by annihilation into mesons, and its width measures the strength of that annihilation.
The long-distance part of the potential is related to the nucleon–nucleon force by G-parity (a symmetry operation combining charge conjugation with a 180° rotation in isospin space that maps the system onto ): one-pion exchange, repulsive in the spin-singlet S wave, becomes strongly attractive in the isospin-0, spin-singlet S wave (, using the spectroscopic label with the isospin and the total spin) of . At short range, however, annihilation into mesons acts as a strong absorptive (imaginary) interaction, so bound states are not guaranteed: whether the attraction survives annihilation is precisely the dynamical question, and potential models disagree. The Paris potential, constrained by antiprotonic-atom data and total cross sections, generates a quasi-bound state () at MeV — about 5 MeV of binding with a width near 50 MeV — and a narrower state at MeV, whereas Bonn–Jülich-type interactions — the meson-exchange potentials developed by the Jülich group — describe much of the same data without generating the same poles.
Several observations motivate the pole assignments. In the radiative decay (the is the charmonium state produced abundantly at colliders), BES observed a strong enhancement of the invariant-mass spectrum right at threshold; in the mesonic decay an enhancement about 50 MeV below threshold, named X(1835), was found and later confirmed with , matching the assignment. In the final-state-interaction (FSI) framework — the rescattering distortion of a production amplitude by the interaction in the final state — the photon is emitted before the baryon pair forms, and the pair then rescatters through the half-off-shell matrix generated by the Paris potential; the same quasi-bound state, interfering with a background amplitude, then accounts both for the threshold enhancement and for the X(1835) peak.
Antiprotonic atoms — atoms in which an antiproton replaces an electron, cascades toward the nucleus, and is finally captured and annihilated — provide the only direct handle on the subthreshold region: the strong-interaction shifts and widths of their X-ray levels probe the interaction at nuclear densities of a few percent of the central density, and because the bound nucleon's binding energy plus recoil effectively places the pair below the free threshold (down to about MeV for valence nucleons), they map the energy dependence of the subthreshold amplitudes. Absorption parameters extracted from the lightest antiprotonic atoms show an S-wave absorption that grows below threshold, consistent with the state, and radiochemical measurements of antiproton capture in nuclei with loosely bound protons show anomalies that the Paris analysis attributes to the narrow state.
The picture nevertheless rests on distant off-shell extrapolations of one particular potential. The source paper (Wycech, Dedonder, and Loiseau, Hyperfine Interactions 234, 141 (2015)) states the open issues precisely: the FSI description reproduces spectral shapes but not absolute decay rates, since photon emission by the final hadrons and exchange currents are not fully computed; the pole assignments are model-dependent, because Bonn–Jülich-type interactions do not predict the same poles; and no dedicated experiment has probed the 0–60 MeV region below the threshold. The paper proposes four such measurements: searches for narrow signals in the spectrum from annihilation at nonzero antiproton momentum, lower-energy polarized measurements, precision fine-structure measurements in light antiprotonic atoms, and annihilation studies at nuclear peripheries where a baryonium signal would be separable from other annihilation backgrounds.
Problem Statement
Establish whether the nucleon–antinucleon system supports quasi-bound states (baryonium) in the 0–60 MeV region below the threshold — in particular, whether the near-threshold enhancements observed in radiative decays (the threshold enhancement and the X(1835)/X(1840)/X(1880) structures in the and invariant-mass spectra) and the antiprotonic-atom and radiochemical anomalies are manifestations of genuine poles of the underlying QCD-driven amplitude — such as the Paris-potential ( MeV) and ( MeV) quasi-bound states — or whether they are threshold and final-state-interaction effects produced without any subthreshold pole. If such states are present, the objective includes determining their pole positions, and isospin assignments, and couplings to and other channels.
The source stresses that discerning these possibilities requires testing the subthreshold region directly, and lists four dedicated measurements that could be performed — possible routes rather than required deliverables: precision fine-structure measurements in light antiprotonic atoms tracing the energy dependence of the amplitudes down to about MeV; studies of annihilation at nuclear peripheries in nuclei with loosely bound valence nucleons where the baryonium signal is separable from other annihilation backgrounds; searches for narrow signals in the spectrum from annihilation at nonzero antiproton momentum; and lower-energy polarized measurements. On the theoretical side, the subthreshold pole content is currently model-dependent: different interactions and nonperturbative approaches — meson-exchange potentials such as Paris and Bonn–Jülich, chiral effective field theory (the low-energy effective theory of QCD built as an expansion in meson momenta), and lattice QCD (QCD discretized on a space-time grid and solved numerically), which must include quark–antiquark annihilation — give differing answers on the existence, positions, and /isospin assignments of subthreshold poles, and the far off-shell extrapolations entering the final-state-interaction description carry a model dependence that remains unquantified.
