Ueda, Krcmar, Gendiar and Nishino (2007) adapted Baxter's corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method to the Ising model on the {5,4} hyperbolic lattice and found a mean-field-like transition at together with an anomalously rapid decay of the density-matrix () eigenvalue spectrum at criticality, which they interpreted as curvature-induced regularization of the corner transfer matrix (CTM). They proposed, purely formally, a one-parameter deformation of the corner Hamiltonian, with coefficients , related to Okunishi's corner-Hamiltonian renormalization group. The problem is the analytic theory behind these observations: the exact or asymptotically controlled form of the CTM eigenvalue spectrum in the thermodynamic limit at the hyperbolic critical point, the microscopic derivation of the formally proposed deformed corner Hamiltonian, and a controlled corner-Hamiltonian RG framework explaining curvature-induced CTM regularization and the associated classical–quantum correspondence. The numerical facts are firmly established — finite correlation length and entanglement entropy at , exponential spectral decay, mean-field exponents on two- and three-dimensional hyperbolic lattices — while exact analytic results exist only for the loopless Bethe lattice; no work derives the spectrum analytically or develops the deformation for loop-bearing hyperbolic lattices, whose RG fixed point is explicitly stated (2024) to lack an analytic solution. The problem is open.
Background
Baxter's corner transfer matrix (CTM) is a tool from exactly solvable two-dimensional statistical mechanics: two crossing lattice lines split a finite system into four quadrants ("corners"), and the CTM is the Boltzmann-weight matrix of one quadrant, carrying the spins on the two cuts as matrix indices. The product of the four corner matrices, , normalized by the partition function, behaves as a reduced density matrix; its eigenvalues therefore act like an entanglement spectrum of the associated one-dimensional quantum problem (the classical–quantum correspondence between 2D classical models and 1D quantum chains). The corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method of Nishino and collaborators combines this construction with the truncation philosophy of White's density matrix renormalization group (DMRG): one diagonalizes , keeps the eigenvectors with the largest eigenvalues, and iterates the corner/half-row fusion relations to grow the system. The spectrum of thus directly controls the accuracy and convergence of the algorithm.
The source paper studies the ferromagnetic Ising model on the regular hyperbolic lattice — the tiling of the hyperbolic plane (a surface of constant negative Gaussian curvature) by congruent pentagons, four meeting at each site; more generally a Schläfli symbol with denotes a hyperbolic tiling by -gons with coordination number . On such lattices the number of sites within graph distance of a point grows exponentially with (the boundary-to-volume ratio stays finite in the thermodynamic limit), which makes Monte Carlo sampling difficult; in exchange, the geodesic (locally shortest) lattice lines provide a natural quadrant decomposition, and the lattice has a recursive self-similar structure that CTMRG can exploit. Ueda, Krcmar, Gendiar and Nishino modified CTMRG accordingly and computed the spontaneous magnetization and nearest-neighbor correlation at the center of large systems, confirming the Monte-Carlo predictions of Shima, Sakaniwa and Hasegawa that the transition at (in units of ) is mean-field-like (critical indices , ), with close to the Bethe-approximation value .
For flat two-dimensional lattices the analytic form of the CTM/ eigenvalue spectrum in the thermodynamic limit is not known in closed form at criticality: exact spectra follow from Baxter's solvable models away from criticality, and universal asymptotic eigenvalue distributions of density matrices and CTMs were derived by Okunishi, Hieida and Akutsu, with exact results for free-fermion chains (whose reduced density matrices share the relevant spectral structure) obtained by Peschel; but at criticality the spectrum decays only algebraically and truncation errors accumulate. Writing defines the corner Hamiltonian; on the flat plane is a sum of local two-spin terms with linearly growing coefficients, . Okunishi constructed a real-space renormalization group (RG) directly on — for which the renormalized corner Hamiltonian satisfies self-consistent fixed-point equations — and a related "Wilson-like" RG in which a cutoff parameter regularizes critical spectra; both were formulated for flat geometries and one-dimensional quantum chains.
On the hyperbolic lattice the source authors observed the opposite of flat critical behavior: the eigenvalues of decay so fast at that keeping states already reproduces the results. They interpreted this as curvature-induced regularization of the CTM at criticality and wrote down, purely formally and without derivation, a one-parameter deformation of the corner Hamiltonian, whose coefficients grow exponentially — in contrast to the linear growth on the flat plane — and which reduces to the flat as ; they noted its compatibility with Okunishi's corner-Hamiltonian RG recursion and its similarity to Okunishi's cutoff regularization. What would settle the question is an analytic theory: a derivation of this deformed object from the microscopic transfer-matrix recursion, the spectrum it implies, and a controlled RG framework that explains and exploits hyperbolic regularization. The paper also lists outlook items (treatment of lattices not composed of geodesics via asymmetric density matrices or duality/star-triangle transformations; classification of ordered states of the eight-vertex model on hyperbolic lattices).
Problem Statement
Provide an analytic theory of the corner transfer matrix of classical lattice models at criticality on negatively curved lattices — prototypically the ferromagnetic Ising model on the hyperbolic lattice studied in the source, and more generally the regular hyperbolic tilings with composed of geodesics, to which the modified CTMRG applies; an analytic characterization established for the lattice addresses the source's question, while the family indicates the geometric generality of the setting — for which CTMRG numerics show that the reduced density matrix has a rapidly (numerically exponentially) decaying eigenvalue spectrum even at the bulk transition temperature. The single scientific objective is the analytic characterization of curvature-regularized corner transfer matrices, with three jointly supporting targets: (a) the eigenvalue spectrum of in the thermodynamic limit at the transition point, in exact closed form or controlled asymptotic form, including its decay constant in relation to the numerically established finite bulk correlation length and finite entanglement entropy at ; (b) the microscopic status of the deformed corner Hamiltonian proposed formally in the source: a derivation from the corner/half-row fusion relations of the hyperbolic lattice, with the correct flat limit recovering , that establishes on a microscopic footing the compatibility with Okunishi's corner-Hamiltonian RG recursion which the source asserted only formally; and (c) on this basis, a controlled corner-Hamiltonian renormalization group in the sense of Okunishi's flat-lattice scheme, whose fixed point yields the spectrum and explains the curvature-induced regularization of the CTM at criticality, together with the corresponding classical-quantum correspondence (the interpretation of the hyperbolic corner spectrum as an entanglement spectrum of a deformed quantum Hamiltonian). These three targets reflect the interests the source itself identifies as unresolved in its conclusion: the eigenvalue structure of at the transition temperature, whose analytic form it notes is 'not well defined in the thermodynamic limit'; the regularization of the CTM at criticality suggested by the rapid eigenvalue decay on the hyperbolic plane; and the classical–quantum correspondence from the viewpoint of the formally deformed corner Hamiltonian. Outside this analytic core: the methodological extension to lattices not composed of geodesics via asymmetric density matrices (substantially implemented in 2012 work) and the classification of vertex models such as the eight-vertex model on hyperbolic lattices (still undeveloped).
