For the inhomogeneous eight-vertex model (equivalently, the XYZ spin-1/2 chain), determinant representations are known for specially normalized scalar products of Bethe vectors only when both vectors depend on the same number of parameters and the anisotropy is rational, . The 2020 work of Slavnov, Zabrodin and Zotov left open the completion of this framework into a form-factor and correlation-function machinery, the key missing ingredient being scalar products of Bethe vectors depending on different numbers of parameters (imbalanced scalar products). Subsequent work by Kulkarni and Slavnov (2023-2024) derived the actions of the monodromy-matrix elements on Bethe vectors and obtained explicit form factors (matrix elements of local operators between transfer-matrix eigenvectors), but only in the free-fermion (XY) limit . The open problem is to derive explicit, determinant-type representations for imbalanced scalar products at arbitrary rational anisotropy and to compute form factors of local spin operators and correlation functions of the generic eight-vertex model; auxiliary open sub-questions include the determination of the normalization function , a proof of the conjecture , the selection rule for odd , and extensions to finite-order anisotropy on the elliptic curve, twisted boundary conditions, and higher-spin XYZ chains.
Background
The eight-vertex model is a two-dimensional statistical lattice model whose Boltzmann weights allow all eight spin-flip configurations around a vertex; its transfer matrix (the product of local -operators along a row of the lattice, whose eigenvalues generate the model's partition function) coincides with that of the XYZ spin-1/2 chain, the anisotropic Heisenberg magnet whose weights are parametrized by Jacobi theta functions (doubly periodic meromorphic functions) of a modular parameter and an anisotropy (or 'Planck constant') parameter . It is the archetypal elliptic integrable model: its -matrix (the local matrix of Boltzmann weights) satisfies the Yang-Baxter equation (the cubic consistency condition on triple overlaps that underlies exact solvability), but, unlike the six-vertex (XXZ) case, it has no global symmetry (a conserved particle-number-type symmetry) commuting with the transfer matrix, so the standard algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA), the usual eigenvector-construction method for integrable lattice models, does not apply.
In the standard ABA for the six-vertex model one builds a monodromy matrix (the product of -operators along the chain) with operator entries , , , ; Bethe vectors are created by repeatedly applying to a pseudovacuum (a simple reference state annihilated by ), and an 'on-shell' vector is one whose parameters satisfy the Bethe equations, making it an eigenvector of the transfer matrix. Form factors, the matrix elements of local operators between such eigenvectors, are reduced to scalar products of Bethe vectors in two steps: the inverse scattering problem (the solution of the quantum inverse problem) expresses local spin matrices at site through products of transfer matrices and monodromy-matrix entries, and known action formulas express the action of any monodromy-matrix entry on a Bethe vector as a linear combination of new Bethe vectors. Since Slavnov's determinant formula, the scalar product of an on-shell and an off-shell (parameters not solving the Bethe equations) Bethe vector is a determinant of an explicitly known (Gaudin-type) matrix, and this underpins essentially all exact correlation-function results for six-vertex-type models.
For the eight-vertex model the generalized algebraic Bethe ansatz (GABA), developed by Zabrodin and co-workers, replaces the global vacuum by a construction based on gauge transformations of the -operator and on intertwining (co)vectors (auxiliary vectors implementing the gauge transformation between the -operator and a shifted one): the monodromy matrix with twisted (gauge-transformed) boundary conditions acquires a local vacuum, and Bethe vectors are built from gauge-transformed creation operators. In this framework Bethe vectors exist when the anisotropy is a rational multiple of the quasiperiod, with , coprime. Slavnov, Zabrodin and Zotov (2020) proved that the normalized scalar products of an on-shell and an arbitrary Bethe vector in the inhomogeneous eight-vertex model (a chain whose -operators carry site-dependent spectral parameters) with the same number of parameters satisfy a linear system and solved it in terms of determinants of explicitly known theta-functional matrices, an elliptic analogue of Slavnov's six-vertex formula.
Several issues were explicitly left open in that work. The anisotropy may more generally be a point of finite order on the elliptic curve, with integers , , , where Bethe vectors are still well defined. The determinant representation was not extended to the eight-vertex model with twisted boundary conditions (in the eight-vertex case the only possible twist matrices are the Pauli matrices) nor to higher-spin XYZ chains. Scalar products in which the left and right Bethe vectors depend on different numbers of parameters were not obtained: the corresponding linear system becomes overdetermined and presumably has only trivial solutions, which was not proven. Most importantly, the action of the monodromy-matrix entries , , , on Bethe vectors, the prerequisite for computing form factors of local operators, was not known, and its existence was described as a rather strong assumption without evidence. In addition, an undetermined normalization function of the Bethe vectors cancels in normalized scalar products but blocks absolute scalar products and the full norm (a conjecture for its -dependence was given but not proven); the conjecture that the zeros in the variable (the combination of the auxiliary gauge parameters , on which depends) of the theta-function factor of equal , where are the Bethe parameters (Bethe roots) of the on-shell Bethe vector, was supported only by numerics for ; and the orthogonality selection rule proven for even (Bethe vectors with parameter labels , of opposite parity are orthogonal) does not extend to odd .
Other approaches to eight-vertex correlations exist but do not provide finite-chain form-factor expansions at generic anisotropy: difference equations for thermodynamic correlation functions (Jimbo, Miwa, Nakayashiki), free-field constructions descending from the face model (Lashkevich, Pugai), and vertex-operator form factors at reflectionless points (special anisotropy values where backward scattering vanishes; Quano). For the open XYZ chain with constrained boundary fields, separation-of-variables methods (an alternative Bethe-ansatz technique that diagonalizes the transfer matrix by mapping it to separate one-dimensional spectral problems) have recently yielded determinant scalar products and correlation-function building blocks (Niccoli, Terras), a parallel route rather than a solution of the periodic-case GABA problem.
Problem Statement
Within the generalized algebraic Bethe ansatz for the inhomogeneous eight-vertex model (XYZ spin-1/2 chain) at rational anisotropy , derive explicit representations, determinant-type where possible, for the scalar products of Bethe vectors in which the left and right vectors depend on different numbers of parameters; here the imbalance denotes the difference between the parameter numbers of the two vectors, and the cases are exactly those generated by the action of monodromy-matrix entries. This includes, as the 2020 formulation asks, proving or refuting that scalar products with larger imbalance reduce to these or vanish, together with the solvability analysis of the corresponding overdetermined linear system. Obtain explicit form factors of the local spin operators of the generic eight-vertex model beyond the free-fermion (XY) limit , and thereby compute its correlation functions. These three targets (the imbalanced scalar products, the form factors of local spin operators, and the correlation functions assembled from them) constitute the mandatory core of the task.
The source also poses the following directly linked auxiliary extensions, each of which is open in its own right but none of which is required to resolve the core above: the determinant representation for scalar products when is of finite order on the elliptic curve ( with integers , , ), for the eight-vertex model with twisted boundary conditions (where the only possible twist matrices are the Pauli matrices), and for higher-spin XYZ chains; the determination of the normalization function of the Bethe vectors (in particular the conjectured -dependence), which cancels in normalized scalar products but is required for absolute scalar products and the full norm; the proof of the conjecture for the zeros in of the theta-function factor of ; and the orthogonality selection rule for odd , where the even- argument fails and the structure of scalar products may differ.
